I got an email welcoming us to the upcoming scheduled tour. It was a nice touch and signed Chris Sandeman. I figured it was interesting that the guides would A) send an email B) sign the mail with the surname being “Sandeman”; what an interesting ‘corporate’ gimmick to promote the brand.
Anyways we got to the meeting location a bit early and our guide offered us some sampling of some New York bagels. I thought that was quite charming and hospitable. Anyways once the tour started, Chris, our guide, gave us the intro and lo and behold he mentions that he is the founder!!
Well for those in the know about the European free tours, we were going to get a tour from the originator of the concept! As one of my kids said “ that’s like getting a book delivered to you from Jeff Bezos”!!! Haha. My family has taken tours with this company in Paris, Brussels, Bruge, Copenhagen, Amsterdam etc in Europe and they have all been so fantastic!
We always found the guides were so well informed and they really worked to make the experience memorable; after all they were working for their tip. I don’t know if there is a screening policy for their guides but from our past experience, they exude the passion of their founder. Chris beyond a doubt truly enjoys what he is doing and has built a company that allows people to understand the place they are visiting at a deeper level than just the quick selfie at an iconic location.
On our NYC tour, being Canadian I enjoyed getting a history lesson of New York in the development of the US. Really interesting to learn of the history of the buildings at the start of Broadway and how much of the land we stood on (eg Battery Park) was reclaimed from the river using Dutch technology.
The explanation of the skyscraper technology and learnings from Statue of Liberty and Otto elevator was an interesting Segway to the World Trade Center portion. I also learned on this tour that the Occupy Wall Street movement had setup in a private park which is why they were not “evicted”.
Anyways as all the other Sandeman tours, we thoroughly enjoyed it. We feel that when you do, you feel truly a little more connected to the place you are a visiting. Chris also followed up with a mail after the tour ended and even provided a phone number to text in case you needed some local info. When have you ever gotten that from a tour guide?? Amazing!
Amazing tour and can’t help but feel privileged that we got to have a tour with the founder of the company that has effectively changed how travellers can experience visiting a city.

This tour was so educational! Our guide knew his facts and kept us intrigued...he even threw in little tid bit of present movie locations with the old history. 👌 We had time when arriving at 911 memorial to look around for a few moments and never felt rushed. He was so enticing that along the way we gained a person that wanted to join in. Not only along the journey was he available for questions but had wonderful bar/restaurant suggestions for the area on my budget. Looking forward to more of SANDEMANs tours in other cities when I visit.

I'm a big fan of Sandeman Free Walking Tours in general, and it is by far my favorite company for tours around the world because the guides are always of really good quality compared to many of the alternatives.
Chris, who was our guide in New York was super energetic and knowledgeable. He is a story teller who really knows how to deliver a good story and we had such an entertaining day with him teaching us about New York.

Outstanding walking tour with Chris! We have done many Sandemans free walking tours around Europe and were excited to see that they are also active in New York.
Already coming in with high expectations, this tour blew us away with compelling story telling, deep knowledge, friendliness, passion and care for the group. We learned an enormous amount about New York, the tour was so fun to follow and Chris seemed to have a story and all the answers to every question.
Thank you so much, Chris!

This Christmas we visited New York and booked a Free Tour around the financial district, Battery Park and 11S Memorial through Civitatis. Our guide was Wilson. He was super interactive, dynamic as well as knowledgeable! We really enjoyed the tour and I would recommend same tour and same guide for sure! Thank you very much for the experience and for enriching our trip :)

I always taking walking tours, but this is the first one I’ve ever taken with Sandeman, and it will definitely not be the last! The 2 1/2 hour historical tour covered The Battery and the financial district. Our guide, Will, was absolutely perfect! He had a great mix of historical facts, humorous anecdotes, interesting trivia, architectural notes, and thoughts to ponder. I’m actually thinking of going again tomorrow with my sister. I can’t wait until Sandeman’s Brooklyn tour is up and running!

We had a great time with the Free Tour going around the Financial District and the WTC. The visit was lead by Wilson who was really passionate about his job and gave excellent advices and tips in NYC. Great guide to know more about the city.

FANTASTIC free walking tour. I've traveled to over 70 countries, and done multiple tours, and this is one of the best tours I've ever experienced. Chris had multiple stories to make the history memorable, and brought the city to life. He has passion and love for the city, which was reflected in the tour. He made the information accessible to my 11 year old boy as well. I cannot recommend this tour enough. THANK YOU!

Unfortunately, can't comment on tour content. Our guide, Nick (who has only lived in NY for 6 months) was so obnoxious that we left. We stuck it out about 20 minutes for the "facebook" photo they insist on taking. He then spent some time babbling about the immigration history complete with galloping type actions etc. His personality could be compared to a giddy 12 year old and we did not want to waste 2+ hours of our time in New York with him. We were still at the "start" point of the tour 20 minutes in and decided to move on. That being said the Spanish guides seemed much more knowledgeable and professional. Had we spoke Spanish we would have jumped to the other tour to give it a try. Having done the Free Tours by Foot earlier on our visit - there is NO comparison. Don't waste your time, much better tours and guides available.

I did 5 to 6 tours with Sandemans in Europe last month and I was mighty impressed with them. So, as soon as I found out that they had tour guides working for them in New York, I was extremely happy. I signed up for the Midtown walking tour in New York which costs about 20 USD. Unfortunately, the guides never showed up. Since it was a short trip and I had done much planning, thanks largely to the faith I had put in them to help me pick the places to visit, it threw me off-guard and resulted in me not making the best use of my time.
This happened in spite of me sending them an email 3 hours prior to the scheduled start time and confirming that the tour would go ahead. I have sent them a few emails since. I haven;t received a reply yet and my money hasn't been refunded either.
The Sandeman guys in New York need to get a grip and make sure they don't tarnish the reputation of a brand that has been synonymous with great walking tours in Europe.

Dear Yogesh R,
Thank you for taking your time to share this regrettable experience with us. While we are truly proud to hear that you recognize our brand from Europe and associate our services with top quality, we are obviously very worried to hear that we have permitted this confusion to take place in New York.
We have contacted our local operations team to inquire about further details that might have led to this misunderstanding, though they confirmed all the tours scheduled ran that day.
It would appear that you have received incorrect information about the tour. I am sincerely sorry that we have permitted this to happen and will be investigating further to ensure that we eliminate all possibility that guests might receive any wrong tour details in future. As well as retrain our reception and customer service staff to make sure that no refund inquiry ever slips away.
Suffice it to say, our tours take place promptly at the scheduled time every day and in the rare event of cancellations, pre-booked customers are notified in advance. This is therefore
clearly the result of a rare misunderstanding or error on our website and I am certain that this is no reflection of our typically excellent and reliable city operations.
As you might have noticed, we sent you a private message inquiring about further details of your experience and offering you an opportunity to speak to our CEO, Dave O’Kelly, so that he can apologize in person. Though we understand this will not make up for your time loss in New York, we will work hard to compensate this one-off incident to you and hope that it will not prevent you from joining us in your future travels.
Kind regards,
Karo at SANDEMANs

Written May 31, 2018
Hello eu-R11,
Many thanks for your question!
It's hard to comment on the exact location of the Free Tour's end, however, it tends to finish by the 9/11 memorial.
If you need to know anything else, please don't hesitate to ask!
All the best,

Hello, this will be my first time trying Sandemans tour model and also my first visit to NYC, and i am trying to see as much as possible - therefore, short of time.
Regarding the tour - does the group ENTER the sights listed and look around briefly, or instead PASS BY with Guide-Narration? ....I mean, at the end of the tour would we be likely to need REVISITs to any of the sights or can we consider them 'Done'?
Written March 28, 2018
Hi ultraswamy,
Many thanks for your question and for your interest in our tours.
Each one of the guides alter the tours' route and content in order to suit their own unique style, so some may enter certain buildings, whilst others don't. However, generally, the tours do not enter the buildings, but rather guests will hear their stories from the outside.
If you need to know anything else, please don't hesitate to ask.
All the best,
Roberto

Hola.
Roberto

We took the New York City Airporter (shuttle bus) from LaGuardia Airport to Grand Central Station. They will give you a leaflet that advertises the free city tour. Meet at Grand Central Station and they will take you on the subway to the Financial District and the start of the tour.
Written January 12, 2018
Roberto
