About
Boroughs of the Dead is a New York City walking tour company with a macabre bent. Our walks are based on the city’s ghastly histories and ghostly legends, which are surprisingly abundant in a metropolis often considered too busy, too modern, for ghosts. But look around, and listen. They’re still here.

The leads are just fabulous. Not sure many people know about this little great tour. It is the best way to experience the city now and then with that eerie twist we all wonder about when thinking about the fascinating history of this great city.

We booked this tour last minute as we didn't have any plans for the Halloween weekend. I'm glad we did -- the tour was a fantastic way to get to know an area of NYC we had not much explored before as recent transplants to the city. Our tour guide Alexa was very informative and enthusiastic. She even stayed behind after the tour to answer questions from people despite the cold and rainy weather. Having traveled quite a bit and having been on a few ghost tours in the past, it was great to book a tour that was well-versed in the history of the area and sensitive to some of the more difficult topics discussed. I can't wait to book with this tour group again next Halloween and bring more friends along.

Loved the West Village Ghost tour! An pleasantly paced stroll through a beautiful neighborhood, stories just spooky enough for a perfect October evening, and our expert guide Edward made it a perfect evening for a New Yorker and a visitor alike. A really engaging way to learn the history of the neighborhood and hear some ghostly stories! I highly recommend supporting Boroughs of the Dead!

This walking tour was highly entertaining: we were taken on the tour of historical lower Manhattan, which is the financial district but was also the original site of early New York. We covered important sites woven together through a story covering 300 years of history, and which was tailored to the specific requests of the group (dutch history and “anything to do with witches”)!

Our guide Carrie has extensive knowledge of the area, and over the course of our tour (about 1.5 miles total) we learned many surprising details about different locations. In particular, we were satisfied that the teaser, “You’ll never guess how many people walk past some of the areas we’re about to visit, and have no idea about what went on there!” was accurate – we really got the impression that many of these historical and macabre sites have truly been forgotten, including the original P.T. Barnum Museum (currently a Zara & Chase Bank).

We really got hooked by our first tour, and I’m sure we’ll have more to share as we work our way through the available tours.

My friends and I did the Astoria tour and had so much fun! The tour guide was so knowledgeable and kept everyone engaged with her spooky tales. The staff even went out of their way to help me acquire a last minute ticket. We will be checking out the tours in the other boroughs!

During the COVID-19 crisis, Boroughs of the Dead is generously offering virtual tours on Zoom. I have attended 3 of their tours and highly recommend them. The "Edgar Allan Poe in Greenwich Village" tour was my favorite because two tour guides teamed up and each brought their own personality to the tour. Their enthusiasm leaped through the Zoom conference and really gave life and emotion to the tour. To me, "The Magic and Mysticism of Central Park" and "The Ultimate Greenwich Village Ghost Tour" were both fun and informative, but I felt there was less of a personal touch and emotion than the Poe tour. Maybe the material was a bit too dense for me that day. Nevertheless, these tours are highly recommended. I believe I was in the minority of not feeling high emotion, because I read many, many other attendees' praise in the Zoom chat box at the conclusion of the tours. (Maybe I've been on too many Zooms and had a little fatigue.) All the tour guides are extremely well-prepared and happy to interact with guests. It's clear they love giving tours. I sincerely hope to attend an in-person tour the next time I'm in New York City. I'm really glad I found Boroughs of the Dead on Eventbrite. Thank you to Boroughs for providing these virtual tours when we're all stuck in the house. If these topics sound like your bag, don't miss out!!

We really enjoyed our BoD tour. The guide was passionate about her literary ghosts and tied the stories and hauntings to the history of the neighborhood and NYC. We were fortunate to see so many homes decorated for Halloween. I gave a 4 as we wanted a bit more spooky ghoulish twist day before Halloween. We were happy to support women-owned business. Tip your tour guide!

I had a great time on the tour, I learned some fascinating things about the history of the village. The tour guide was great, she was engaging and had a deep knowledge. I did wish there was more up close and personal stops, particularly something where we might go into one of the buildings or see more artifacts.

Hi Bryan, I'm so glad you had a great time and learned fascinating new things, and that your guide was engaging and knowledgeable! We definitely empathize with your longing to go inside haunted sites, but there are no ghost tours in NYC that do, largely because most of these sites are private spaces or sacred sites such as churches or cemeteries (we address this on our website's FAQ page). Thanks for taking the time to leave a review! Best, Andrea

Due to covid, these ladies are doing virtual tours and rocking it! Just did their Halloween eve Magic and Mystery in Haunted Harlem and Washington Heights. They are so lovely, fun, professional with a flair, knowledgeable, vivacious and awesome! Highly highly recommend them. Cannot wait to be with them live when they can go back out on the streets. In the meantime, you won't be disappointed on their virtual tours from the comfort of your couch!

This was my second tour with this company, and it won't be my last. Even though this tour took place in a neighborhood I've lived in for over 20 years (Astoria) I still saw and learned so many things I had never encountered before! The tour guide (Marie) was energetic, engaging, and enthusiastic. All their guides deftly manage the macabre situations these tours reference with sensitivity, honesty, and interest. The 'further reading' recommendations are a serious plus. Take a tour with them, you won't regret it!
