My husband and I took the 9/11 Memorial and Museum and One World Observatory tour. The Memorial Tour, which was guided by Ray, was a 90 minute tour starting at St.Paul Chapel, an important location for the emergency responders during the search and recovery activities. We then walked over the Memorial, which is much more extensive than I realized. I was impressed by Ray’s extensive knowledge of both the history of the area and the tragic and heroic events surrounding 9/11.
Our visit to both the 9/11 Museum and the One World Observatory were unguided and at our own pace, which was ideal.
In the museum, we watched a movie on the boatlift of evacuees that spontaneously arose from the boat captains in the Hudson. If I remember correctly, 500,000 men, women, and children were rescued from Manhattan and transported across the Hudson to safety by these unsung heroes. This was a very moving highlight of our time at the 9/11 Museum.
During our visit to the One World Observatory, we were amazed at the views from that height. You can rent a device that is supposed to identify landmarks from the north, south, east, and west orientations. Whether it was operator inadequacy or a problem with the premise, we found them unhelpful and just enjoyed the view. We did also enjoy an early dinner in their restaurant on the 101st floor. Prices were on par with what we have been experiencing in the City, and they do not accept cash.
Overall, it was a wonderful experience and I recommend it for families and anyone who wants to get a deeper understanding of 9/11 and the area.
