Civil War History of Manhattan

Joyce has a layer cake of knowledge. Recreating/creating visual and verbal moments in history. I thoroughly enjoyed my tour, and more.

Joyce was very interesting, full of little known facts that made the stories of NYC come alive. She answered every one of our many questions and provided an amazing amount of information about the past and present of the NYC "Gold Coast" area.

Our bus tour group was delighted with Joyce's step on tour through several parts of Manhattan. She has such a wealth of historical, practical and statistical information on NYC that she shares in an delightful manner. But Joyce also makes the city come alive with insider information that can only come from someone who has spent much of her life... More

I have taken several of these walking tours. They are inexpensive and a great way to see interesting places in NYC. Joyce is an historian and has a great personality and makes the tours both educational and entertaining. There are many tours with many different themes. Visit the website to see the variety and schedule.

Obsessed by the Italian culture as a whole - my friend and I took Joyce's tour of Italian Greenwich Village while visiting on Vacation. It was FANTASTIC! Joyce was engaging, educational and fun! I loved, loved, loved the tour and thought it was the best $20 I've ever spent! I cant wait until I'm in NYC again so that I... More

We took the Financial District tour with Joyce and had a ball. While we learn some American history in school, Joyce makes it all come alive and connects it to present day America. Joyce is very perceptive and knows how to adjust her tour on the fly to suit her clientele. We will be back for more as I am... More

I took my high school students (15-16 years old) on the "Gangs of New York" tour. Although I prepared my students by showing them portions of the movie and teaching about the Five Points neighborhood in class, not much of that history was included in the tour. Joyce spoke a lot about the current Chinatown neighborhood, which was interesting, but... More

This is my third tour with Joyce Gold. I have done the Grand Central Station tour, The little Italy Tour, and this was a Ground Zero of the World Trade Center tour. It was about the area around Ground Zero what happened on 9/11 and what has happened since. Of course with Joyce Gold, you get whatever you ask for,... More

Staying in Chelsea

Neighborhood Profile
Chelsea
Home to hundreds of art galleries, beautiful brownstones, and one of New York’s newest and most popular attractions, Chelsea is one of the city’s jewels when it comes to neighborhood life. The contemporary art scene is an integral part of the neighborhood’s identity, with gallery openings almost every night of the week and countless exhibits to explore. As a longtime hub of gay culture in New York City, it’s also a diverse district with a vibrant nightlife scene. The opening of the High Line, an abandoned elevated train track transformed into a world-class pedestrian park, gave this neighborhood new life as a tourist destination. The High Line provides visitors with a tranquil, elevated space with incomparable views, providing an unparalleled way to experience the city.
