All tours are lead by PhD candidates in American history or a related field. Big Onion has been called "The Best Walking Tour in New York" by New York Magazine; "Best Place to Take Out-of-Town Guests" by The Village Voice; and "One of the best urban walking tours in the world" by Forbes. Big Onion is an approved educational vendor for the NYC Department of Education and a Programming Partner with both the Brooklyn Historical Society and the South Street Seaport Museum. To start our month in NYC, we peeled back layers of some of NYC's history with 5 tours. Each tour revealed more. Our enthusiastic, well-educated guides gave document-based, historic appraisals of well-selected sites. Some highlights - learning about the diverse uses of various sites over NYC's long history & how each site can launch a discussion on different aspects of... More

We did the Times Square tour a while ago and were absolutely delighted. The tour guide was very knowledgable and we learned a lot about the history of the Times Square neighborhood.

Thank you for walking with us! Seeing that you are a local we really appreciate that you braved Times Square - a neighborhood so often avoided by locals - with Big Onion. We look forward to having you explore other city neighborhoods with us again soon. Seth Kamil, President More

I joined the west village walking tour. You can sign up online or just meet the group at the meeting point (like i did) and pay on the spot. The tour was fascinating, and although it covered a very small area the history and knowledge of the guide, from big historical facts to small anecdotes made it to an enriching... More

We were a group of 4, two couples, looking for something to do in NYC. Two in the group wanted to take this tour and the other 2 thought they would just go along to be nice. However, we all enjoyed the tour, learned more about the Revolutionary War as well as the history of NYC. It was for just... More

Thank you for joining this past weekend's Revolutionary New York walk! We are very glad that you all enjoyed the tour! The Revolutionary and early Federalist history in New York is so often forgotten. This particular walk, as you know, was to commemorate the ratification of the Bill of Rights - done right here in Lower Manhattan! We look forward... More

We signed up for the walking food tour, i wish we didn't. It was very boring and long and there is hardly any food to taste. The guide was very nice but very long winded and talked about subject no one cared about.

Lenny Sorry you did not enjoy our Multi-Ethnic Eating Tour. Perhaps you didn't read the website description - we pretty clearly state this is a history tour and the food supports the historic content. I hope that other TripAdvisor users take a moment to not only read the many positive reviews about this tour but also take a moment to... More

Very well done. The young lady is very knowledgeable and willing to answer questions. I am older individual who is still learning. Time well spent in a beautiful day.

This was an excellent way to spend a couple of hours exploring parts of New York. Having undertaken a food tour of the Pike Place Market area in Seattle a few years ago, we were expecting something similar, however this was much better. Rather than just moving between eating stops and talking about the restaurants/shops etc, the food was used... More

Thank you for your wonderful review of our Multi-Ethnic Eating Tour. Writing for Paul and myself, so happy that you enjoyed the tour - both the content and the "spirit" behind it. We really try to present a strong history-focused walk and use the food to support the historic content - yes - as a prop as you said. We... More

My daughter and I took the Historic Harlem walking tour on a 'stinking hot day'. Our host, Thomas was a very knowledgeable and gracious host!! He kept us moving at a perfect pace and took advantage of shady spots to point out important historical points of interest. We thoroughly enjoyed this walking tour and will definitely book with Big Onion... More

Toured lower Manhattan w/aya, and Greenwich village w/Tamara. Both tours were fascinating and fun. Love it that onion employs grad students as guides. Both were very enthusiastic and could communicate complicated morsels of history in a captivating style. I learned so much about nyc and would definitely go w/ big onion again. At $20, this is an amazing bargain.
