The area

Address
Neighborhood: Greenwich Village
Commonly known as “the Village” to New Yorkers, it was here in Greenwich Village that both 1960’s counter culture and the LGBT movement were born. Famous for its bohemian past, head to Washington Square Park to get a feel for this diverse and energetic neighborhood. You’ll find NYU students, street performers, skateboarders, kids frolicking in the fountain, and locals relaxing and playing chess. Stroll the streets to discover a mix of majestic town homes and hidden bars and restaurants that give this neighborhood an old-school residential feel. When the sun goes down, check out one of the famous jazz or comedy clubs that still packs them in every night.

My wife dragged me here to get out if the freezing cold, and glad she did. West Village, plenty of locals, and has a cosy feel. Happy hour 4-7 on wine and beer. The bar staff had a great soundtrack of various genres playing which helped the atmosphere. Just hit the spot for us.

This used to be a great place. Sometime over the last year or two the management changed its attitude and as far as I can tell they exist to be rude to tourists and overcharge for drinks. Don't even bother with the food. Lastly, they hate soccer and soccer fans. If you love the beautiful game definitely go elsewhere. In fact, if you like good bars, go elsewhere.

This is one of the iconic bars in NYC. Locally an Irish Saloon with a long link to famous writers and drinkers. As the weather warms the outside tables are a must. Try the half and half, stout and ale. It will make you start telling stories.

Have been here in the past and had a great time. Found out it is under new ownership and you can sure tell. Manager is rude and clearly has no business sense or people skills. A shame for this bar with a great history.

This place looks like a cosy establishment and draws a crowd because of its links to Dylan Thomas but the drinks are expensive and the service is terrible. Avoid.

We come from Swansea are interested in Dylan Thomas and were dipping in and out of the Dylan Thomas walking tour. As this place is last on the tour we felt we should drop in for a drink. I wish we hadn't. We felt belittled as the staff sneered at us for wanting to see the Dylan Thomas room which in the tour is described as ' dedicated to the poet'. The staff were very ill informed about his life and work and generally it was an embarrassing disaster visit to a place we were looking forward to seeing.

What a great pub - this was Dylan Thomas's last watering hole before his death in New York and one of the dark-panelled rooms is dedicated to him with portraits, extracts of his poems, posters etc.

The whole place is unspoilt and atmospheric. There is a good choice of beers - we didn't eat but others customers' meals looked good with generous portions.

Everyone was very friendly. We spent the afternoon there watching Man U v Real Madrid in the Champions' League - we were surprised to realise it was still light when we got outside!

Well worth a visit and a detour from busier parts of NYC. It's in a pleasant part of Greenwich Village - not too far from subways but it's just nice to walk in that area anyway.

I dearly love the White Horse Tavern and not just because of its history. As Faulkner wrote, "The past is never dead. It's not even past." Yes, Dylan Thomas took his last drink there. Brendan Behan was a patron and in the 1980's young playwrights and poets like Sam Shepherd hung out there. What attracts me to the White Horse is the same thing that must have attracted all of those names years ago. It's the quality of the conversation. I can walk in off the street and have a serious conversation about Eugene O'Neill with someone I've never met before and end up feeling as if that person is an old friend. It's a magical place.

Great place for a chilled lunch on a sunny Sunday, like an old British pub, nice staff and good food and beer.

We decided to do a pub crawl of the 10 oldest bars in NYC. One of those is the White Horse. While this is a very historical bar, there was not a lot more to it.. We did not eat, bud had several beers. Service was very ordinary and nothing else special. Go for the history, but don't plan on making a day or night of the White Horse.
