Top ways to experience Saks Fifth Avenue
The area
Neighborhood: Midtown
This is the iconic New York that so many visitors imagine before they visit - spectacular skyscrapers like the Chrysler Building and Empire State Building, iconic public buildings like Grand Central Terminal and the New York Public Library, and the non-stop hustle and bustle of the city streets. Fifth Avenue is a shopper's paradise where you can find every kind of store imaginable, with fashion brands ranging from the affordable to the ultra-fancy. Visit Rockefeller Center to experience towering Art Deco grandeur, and foodies will love the busy restaurants that stay open late in Koreatown. After dark, Midtown calms down a bit, but at any time of day or night it still feels 100% New York.

For all those who are looking for a Christmas show I am sharing my experience of this years Saks 5th Avenue Light show. I look forward to Saks’ annual decorations of both the windows and front façade lights and not having the staple Christmas shows available this year, this light show brought a smile to my face. The show runs for about 5 minutes with the next loop beginning 5 minutes after. The orchestra music is soothing and is seamlessly complimented with an array of light combinations ranging from Ombre to classic red and green. There are safety reminders that are announced between shows. I went on a week night and although the viewing did get crowded everyone was properly masked and the crowd dispersed after the 5-minute show. It is a treat to see this show and is on my list to see again.

I went inside Saks Fifth Avenue for a visit in December 2021. It actually was the first time I went inside Saks Fifth Avenue. Normally during my December visits to New York City I view the light show at Saks Fifth Avenue in the evening from the outside. But it was too crowded this year. Going inside for 30 minutes was a great experience. It was great to see all the upscale brand names. But 30 minutes to see it was enough. It was crowded and I did not go there to buy anything. I exited and went to attend mass at Saint Patrick's Cathedral.

Couples
We called in here after visiting St Patrick’s Cathedral, almost next door. From the moment you step inside you are struck by beauty, class, color and style. It makes you feel special just to walk through so many gorgeous garments. We walked each floor just admiring the fashion, the merchandising was impeccable and the assistants were friendly and helpful if you needed advice. My husband purchased a beautiful, classic, tweed sports jacket that fitted him as if it was a bespoke garment and we were given great service with nothing but concern for our country once they realised we were from Australia given the current fires that are being experienced back home. Yes the items are expensive, but end of season Sale offers certainly helped us - even so there are always cosmetics & they cost the same wherever you buy them, so we can all experience a little bit of spoiling!! My husband has declared his purchase was a bucket list tick off for him which is just great. There is nothing like walking out of a special store with one of their bags on your arm to make you feel special.

I passed by Saks Fifth Avenue in November 2019 and December 2019 to watch the Christmas light show. It is always spectacular and there is always a huge crowd watching it. Inside Saks Fifth Avenue was mobbed with Christmas shoppers.

Saks Fifth Avenue is still one of the main Christmas in New York must sees. The decorated holiday windows where you stand shoulder to shoulder in a crowd to get a peek of, are elaborate and changed each year. The magical light and music show on the front of the building is something to stop and enjoy.

If you are in the Rockefeller Center area then take a moment to check out this light display. It is outstanding. It is hard to believe that you can stand on a sidewalk and enjoy a light show on the façade of a building. But you will!! Music. Colours! Frozen! It was awesome. The light show plays routinely so stick around to check it out. To see this outside display is something you will never forget. We have seen it several times now and enjoyed it more and more each time.

They have cute lights and decorations right outside next to the Rockefeller center but upon entering you will see all kinds of high-end brands such as Coco Channel, Gucci, etc. The staff is very kind and helpful if you're looking for anything specific. If you're visiting to shop, items there will cost you a pretty penny. There are 3 floors once you enter.

We were lucky enough to be in NYC the night that the iconic Christmas display windows were unveiled. It's quite a show - entertainment, fireworks and then the big reveal. This season's theme was Frozen. Admittedly, the displays have become very commercial compared to decades past, but the artistry still brings the same holiday magic. The lighting of the building is amazing, too. A must-see in NY during the holidays.

We were in New York in the week before Christmas and the city is highly decorated, which is wonderful. There is magic everywhere you turn. However, the beautifully choreographed and orchestrated SAKS Christmas Light show really raises everyone's spirits and is absolutely fantatstic. If you visit over the festive period, make sure to catch it. You won't be disappointed.

We visited Saks in December 2021 because I was looking for a fragrance that is apparently discontinued. The salesperson didn't know the products he was tasked with selling at all and was at a complete loss when I told him I do not wear sweet scents, which is what he wanted to send me home with. The exterior of the store is beautiful, but the interior has very harsh, unflattering lighting and looks like it belongs in a suburban mall. Even the elevator doors are clad in cheap paneling that's so chipped it should have been replaced years ago. I'll stick to smaller boutiques from now on, thanks.

Do you need a reservation to go now that COVID is going on

To go into the main area you do not need a reservation, you will of course need a mask however. However, small stores will have a capacity limit.

Will Saks have a Disney Light Show for Christmas 2018? If yes, what is the first date of the show?

I do not see a schedule online but it normally starts in late November, after the Thanksgiving Day Parade (also known as the Macy's Parade) on November 22nd. The Rockerfeller Tree Lighting takes place on November 28th. The Saks light show is daily starting at 5pm to 11pm and replays every 10 minutes at Saks on Fifth Avenue between 49th & 50th Sts. The best viewing is from Rockefeller Center!
