Max can only be described as amazing - his knowledge about New York combined with his adaptability for flexing the tour based on things he think you might like make him an incredible tour guide. We were only in NY for a short time so wanted to get the most from our time. Max showed us everything we wanted to see and some bits we didn’t even know we wanted to see. He provided us with tips for the rest of our stay and showed us some hidden little eateries which I’ve passed on to friends who have since visited. We visited during the height of summer with incredible temperatures and our comfort was Max’s main concern. He made the whole experience as enjoyable and comfortable as possible. Highly recommended!

I am a big fan of NYC, and although I’d travelled there several times, I hadn’t spent much time in Upper Manhattan. When planning my most recent trip, I was excited to come across CityRover Walks and found that they could offer a private tour devotedly entirely to this area of Manhattan.

My Upper Manhattan Tour with Greg was excellent. He clearly knows the city like the back of his hand, and it was so enjoyable seeing several sites with him over the course of 4.5 hours. Some of the highlights were Harlem (especially its impressive historic homes, including Hamilton Grange), Washington Heights (in which the Morris-Jumel Mansion sits), and Morningside Heights, where I had the opportunity to walk around the spectacular and storied grounds of Columbia University. Greg provided terrific commentary and answered all my questions, and I was grateful for having had the fortune of experiencing these neighbourhoods from his informed perspective.

I would certainly book another tour with Greg and CityRover Walks.

Max was fantastic! This was our first trip to New York so we scheduled a 6-hour tour with CityRover Walks and Max was our guide. He planned a packed full day for us based on what we wanted to see. We only had a few days and wanted to get the most out of our tour AND MAX DELIVERED!!! His knowledge of the city and history was awesome! We went everywhere and our walk was personalized to us! From start to finish it was fun! Had the best day! Thank you so much for an awesome experience!

Four retired women: one from MO; one from AZ; one from WI; and one from FL, all gathered in NY for a history/literature hike. The ten-mile tour was half planned and then Andrew joined us! He added great dimension to our outing because of his knowledge of the city (more importantly places to eat and shop). He worked well with suggestions and adapted when needed…professional, comfortable, and personable. We were glad he was with us as he added fun to our sightseeing adventure.

We were following the trail set out for us in the book, Lillian Boxfish Takes a Walk by Kathleen Rooney, complete with limericks, Negronis, and Oreo cookies.

Can't say enough - this was amazing.
Our tour was with Dan. We were a family of 3 teenage girls and parent.
Needless to say, we let him take the lead on customizing our tour based on our time in NY, walked at our own pace, and had a blast!
Dan was knowledgeable and answered our questions. One of the highlights of our NY visit.
Highly recommended!

We were picked up by Greg at Columbus Circle and he took us through to Washington Heights.
Here our tour started. Myself, my spouse and Greg. It was absolutely amazing. We walked through an unknown part of manhattan for visitors ( and probably locals too) and Greg showed us things and places we never knew. His intricate knowledge of history and social sciences was absolutely astounding. We concluded our tour in Harlem. This was so incredibly amazing.
I never felt I was in a tour, it felt like an old friend taking us through Harlem and Washington heights - I did not feel like a tourist- this was important to me.
He even changes his language to accommodate us by switching to the metric system so that we could understand

I highly rate this tour- try to get Greg to take you.

What an amazing tour! We walked all around Manhattan and saw many of the iconic sites. The Greg was a fantastic
tour guide! WAY beyond our expectations. We learned so much about the history of the area—just fascinating! I will definitely book another walking tour on my next NYC visit. I highly recommend it.

Did the Central ParkTour with Max and was really expecting a lot more considering this was the #1 rated tour. Although the guide seemed, to have some basic knowledge of the history of the park it was far less then I expected based on the reviews I have read. Being someone who likes to ask a lot of questions I took the opportunity to learn a bit more and asked several questions about the park. Some of them I thought were basic questions like " What was the distance of the reservoir and who built the beautiful castle in the park and I was surprised our guide did not have the answers. I got the feeling that my questions were annoying to our guide and left feeling that he was unapproachable. I understand that his website states that he focuses more on storytelling rather then dates and historical facts bus as a guide I was expecting he would have more knowledge about the city. I left feeling that this was a new venture for him and that he was inexperienced. His stories although some of them good were told without a lot of passion or excitement. I was also upset that we spent 3 hours in the park and only covered a small amount of territory. Overall I just felt very surprised that this was so highly rated and expected more. Although the price was affordable I felt like I got what I paid for and it was not a lot. In the past I had done a tour with Big Onion and our guide was a historical phd student whose knowledge really surpassed this experience and I left feeling like I learnt a lot more.

Dear TripAdvisor user, for the sake of transparency to other readers, you arrived late, and your frequent line of questioning (often while I was mid-sentence) and constant chain-smoking (which, as you acknowledged, is no longer legal in Central Park) on our tour was disruptive to the rest of the group. As for your points of criticism related to my knowledge base, my level of energy and enthusiasm, and my approachability, I strongly believe them to be completely unfounded. For example, one of the first things I told the group when we got to Belvedere Castle was that it was designed by Calvert Vaux – someone I spoke a lot about during the tour, and I answered most if not all of your other questions. And yes, I focus on great storytelling on my tours, but the stories are narratives of historical facts, dates, and figures. I also make it a point to engage every single customer on every tour, which the other TripAdvisor reviews clearly support. In fact, there are two other reviews, published before yours, by customers from the same exact tour you were on who gave it 5-stars and offered the opposite viewpoints. As for your criticism of the route, we covered approximately three miles on foot during our 3-hour walk, which is what my company’s website clearly states. There is nothing in the tour description that would suggest the tour is all-encompassing, as that would require an all-day excursion to cover the Park’s 843 acres. In fact, I even stopped at one point to show the group a map of the Park to emphasize how big it is, how much territory we covered, and how much of the Park was left for future exploration. Lastly, your reference to another walking tour provider raises suspicions as to the true motive behind your participation in and review of the tour, as does your comment during the tour about your friends getting you the tour ticket as a gift, which contradicted the fact that the purchase confirmation had your own payment information.

Everything everyone has said is true - we did two tours with Danielle and can't speak highly enough of her / them. Rather than saying how good they were I'll explain our motivation for taking the tours. We've been to New York a couple of times and done our own thing - using a guide book, with a little background reading, so we were fairly familiar with the areas visited.

However, Danielle took it to a different level. Yes there were facts and figures, but they were interspersed with memorable information, bringing the sights / areas to life.

The tour price also includes a couple of little "extras" - a slice of pizza (the best we had in New York) and a half of beer and some cheese and crackers in the old Irish Bar (McSorley's Old Ale House). There's also a discount for booking more than one tour.

We have absolutely no hesitation in recommending CityRover Tours.

This is long, but its what you need to know before you even think of booking a tour with anyone else.

My girlfriend and i are 25 years old. We like seeing cool and interesting things, minus all the "frommers fun facts" out of a text book that will bore us to death. So we recently booked a trip to NYC but only for a day. upon booking this trip i was looking into getting a tour as we had never been to NYC before, we wanted to take in as much as we could for the day that we were there. So upon doing that i stumbled upon these NYC "walking tours" on trip advisor and thought it would be a great idea alternative to riding one of those tour buses.(and boy was i ever right!)

So before i booked, I looked at the different kinds of tours on trip advisor and decided to email the top 3.(being that they are in the rank that they are for a reason) I gave each of them the scenario i was in, what i was looking for, and the kind of people we are in hopes that i could get a better feel for these companies as they replied with something i would like to purchase as far as a tour goes. I heard back from them all saying how great their companies were, how long they have lived in NYC for and yadda yadda.
What captured my attention the most was Max's reply. He seemed so down to earth and was more looking to cater his tour to us in a special way by customizing it however we wanted if we didn't like what his initial package was offering, In order for us to see everything we wanted. NONE of the others said anything like that. they gave me what their tour was going to cover, and that was it.
I then sent all 3 of them a 2nd email with regards to how their tour was comparable with the 2 others. at this point it was just to see if they each had something special up their sleeves, and how they viewed their competition. after receiving all 3 replies back, Max was on top of my list once again. he sent me an email that declined to share his views on his competition and also laid out a customized tour that might appeal to us. i was blown away at this point. after hearing trash talk from the other 2 about their competition, how the Gotham tour was more than double the price of max's, with no room to bargain. and how the real ny tours was going to just send us out with 1 of 20 of their struggling actors , It was easy for me to make my decision to go with max's City rover tours. HANDS DOWN.

So! we arrived in NY and went on our tour with max and i was so reassured that i made the right decision. he knows so much about the city. we talked about pretty much everything as we walked. and as far as stumping him goes? no such thing. this guy did his homework. as we were on our tour he would stop us and explain a few things on certain places, as we were standing there we got a few "ny locals" each time that liked to put their "2 cents" in and say that he was wrong and tried to tell him "how it really is". Needless to say these people walked away pretty quiet in the end with their pride being swallowed faster than a shot of Jack Daniels. This guy knows alot. there is no such thing as questioning/stumping him because its impossible, and he does it in such a way that it doesn't come off rude or as if 2 people are having an argument. Max is very professional and he makes you feel as if you are not a customer, but a friend. and he caps his tours at 12 people. that way you can actually hear what he's saying and get a more personable experience. we did see another walking tour that had about 20 people in it. there's no way everyone can hear what is going on. none the less, you look like one big mob walking down the street.

NOTE: if you were thinking of taking a tour bus around the city? Don't! its the biggest waste of money. as we were walking we noticed a couple of double Decker buses that were giving tours. This is not the place to be. these buses stop for all of 4 seconds and then go again. and in the meantime you get to try and hear the sound of a cab honking at you for stopping over what the guide is saying. not a good time at all.

In all, if you have made it through this novel of a review. i would have to congratulate you. 2ndly i will say that when i come back to ny, max will be the FIRST one i call to go on another tour with. this guy just loves his city and that's all there is to it. you will see if you book with him. it was the best money i spent in my time in NYC.

So in conclusion....

If you want to double overpay for a tour with a lady that thinks shes #1 above all others, and is looking to get rich off of you, go with Gotham.

If you want to have some random actor sent out with you, feeding you useless facts and the same corny jokes they do on all their tours, in a city they read a tour guide manual on and barely even know, go with Real NY Tours.

If you want a tour that meets your needs, has a very very informative guide that also owns the company and does all his own tours, and really makes you feel comfortable and at home in one of the largest city's in the world. Go with max and City Rover. You wont be disappointed.

Oh and lastly. Max is only been doing these tours since the spring of this year and hes already ranked where he is in the top 3. AND since i did my homework and booked with him 2 weeks ago, he is gone from #3 to #2 in trip advisor rankings. So that must say something in itself for only being in business for 7 months.

Book with City Rover & Enjoy a GREAT experience!!!
