We've used many hop on/hop off buses and have never had a live tour guide on the bus. Usually everything is pre-recorded. With the personal guide you got a little personal history and nuggets from their experiences.

uptown loop is 2 hours , down town 2/1/2 hrs depends on traffic and security closures, for the Bronx tour 1/1/2 hrs you have to take the bus from mid town , ask the driver or the guy at the stop they are very helpful,
