Rich was fully engaged and created an interactive tour. Great for both the art enthusiast and a family with curious kids. Over 2 hours we meandered through the neighborhood, observed a ton of art, found a few happy art souvenirs, spoke to artists, and came a way with a rich cultural and historical appreciation for Gowanus and it's art treasures! I attended with my family of 4 (2 kids age 10 and 14). All of us loved the experience and will do it again next time we visit NYC.

Rich took a small group of us on a fascinating tour of LES street art and graffiti from the 70s to the present, quite literally, as we spoke to both an early graffiti writer from the 70s/80s and a couple of guys who were writing their tags on a wall. Rich generously shared his knowledge and was able to skillfully relate the graffiti and street art to the changing societal issues in NYC, as well as related cultural phenomena (such as hip-hop and fine art). Highly recommended.

Rich Garr’s mid-November tour of Gowanus Street Art was an eye and mind-opening delight -- a perfect way to walk and see Brooklyn. I will not be able to walk down any street from now on without being on the alert for interesting graffitt (words) or temporary art – art that is carefully made, deliberately placed, art that will eventually disappear. We all met on a corner in Gowanus, staying safely distant . Rich gave a brief history of street art/ graffitti going back to the late 60s. We saw commemorative plaques reminding us of important moments in the history of Gowanus that turned out to be paper facsimiles., many political posters and smaller works, sculptures placed by iron-workers, examples of “yarn-bombing” and learned building histories. Rich was energetic and extremely knowledgeable. I am eager to attend another walk with Rich soon.

This is one of the best, nay, the best tour I did over my 3mths in NYC. Rich was a wealth of knowledge and an artist himself. He knew not only the history of the artists we were finding but also discovering their new works (and their evolutions) during our tour. It was amazing and totally worthwhile for anyone visiting NYC wanting to get a deeper understanding of street art and the social issues it comments on!

I went on a walking tour of the street art scene in the Gowanus neighborhood. Our guide, Rich, is so knowledgeable of this dimension of the art community that we were introduced to a variety of "lanes" in which the artists present their work. Each stop was thoughtful and Rich was ready with a story or anecdote about every one. He loves what he does snd this is the best teacher! He also arranged for us to spend time with one street artist, Dylan Bauvez. We were a very lucky group as this is someone to watch. Thanks Rich!

Rich was an exceptional and knowledgeable guide to the secretive and not well understood street art scene. I went with my mother, sister and her husband and my sister who lived in NYC and has been coming here her whole life said, "this is the best thing I've ever done in NYC". I agree. This is an excellent way for New Yorkers to get to know their city better and/or spend a day with out of town guests looking for a real New York experience. Since the tour I've done some more research into the street art scene and I will be going on more walks with Rich, just waiting for more guests! Go now before Rich starts teaching his unique knowledge at a university somewhere and you can't get him to take you out!!

Rich took us on a great tour of perhaps 7 Lower East Side galleries on a recent Saturday. He was very personable and informative, gave us an overview of the gallery and their art, and often introduced us to the owners. He also gave a brief history of the area we were walking in, which was great. I learned a lot and really enjoyed it. Would definitely recommend his tours.
On a side note - be sure to wear comfortable shoes, and perhaps bring something to drink.

I'd like to recommend a walking tour in New York City -- Gotham Side Walks. Rich led four of us on a tour of Coney island and Brighton Beach. He made it a fun place to tour mid-January, with an assist by wonderful weather. Rich is very knowledgeable about the history of the area, as well as current events. His humor, flexibility and affable nature made for a highly enjoyable walking tour. The web site is gothamsidewalks.com.

My girlfriend and I joined Rich for his Brooklyn Street Art Walk of Gowanus. Rich is knowledgeable and passionate about street art and the walking tour was really great! He has deep knowledge about the local artists and also weaved the history of the land into different parts of the tour which was unique and interesting. Highly recommend wether you’re an out of towner or a local looking to get deeper appreciation for your backyard.

Rich's street art tour of Gowanus was a great primer on the many forms of graffiti and street art, from tagging to stickers to large-scale murals, with details about the artists as well as historical context about the Gowanus Canal and its surrounding area. My eyes were opened to the neighborhood in a whole new way!
