Thanks for visiting Big Apple Jazz Tours! Since 1997 we have been on the front lines of the underground New York City jazz scene - taking small groups down into the basements and alleyways where live jazz still thrives in neighborhood nightclubs from Harlem to Greenwich Village. Legendary players and clubs as well.

All live music and transportation costs are included in the tour price. Our jazz tours take place in Manhattan for the most part, but private tours to Brooklyn, Queens or the Bronx can be arranged.

Our goal is to offer the most intimate, small group tours available to Harlem and Greenwich Village neighborhood nightclubs and juke joints. We also provide insight into the Big Apple jazz scene as it has evolved over the past hundred years.

Consider hiring Gordon Polatnick to take you on a private tour throughout the city during the day or night to experience the city's many intriguing neighborhoods at your pace and focusing on your interests.

We met Gordon in front of the Pink store in Columbus Circle and he took us on the subway to 135th street in Harlem, explaining all the way about how jazz evolved in that area and why things turned out the way they did. Our first stop was the American Legion Post 389 where we were treated like royalty by... More

Found the information on Big Apple Jazz Tours. Talked with Gordon and he set us up with the Harlem tour. It was an amazing 5 hours of good company, good food and great music. Gordon took us to places we would never have found on our own and each place was a little different and all 3 were great. At... More

Amanda Humes is a real character. Having her around for several hours can spin your head - in a good sense of the word. The trip to the first joint was longer than expected but with plenty of loughs. Still, we arrived a little early and the place was fairly empty. Nice gesture: the performing group was mostly Israeli, as... More

One of the greatest nights of live music we have enjoyed. Gordon Polatnick, a principal of Big Apple Jazz Tours was our personal guide for the night and he took us to 2 bars/jazz clubs in Greenwich Village where we enjoyed the best jazz. We first listened to 'Adam Kipple's Organ Soul Expansion' in one club, then we moved to... More

Thanks for your kind words. I'm glad you mentioned the musicians we got to hear that night. Two unsung heroes who have the talent, passion and experience to headline jazz festivals world-wide but we take for granted here in NYC as small club regulars we expect to see up close and personal. We will always strive to expose our guests... More

The bigapplejazz.com Harlem Juke joint tour must be one of the great New York experiences. Our small group joined Gordon Polatnick’s tour on a mid-week night in October. We took the A train to Harlem and visited three small venues offering wide ranging music. An authentic experience and what an eye opener for a visitor to NYC! The first venue... More

Time stands still. The atmosphere is real jazz in Harlem with the worlds cream musicians. Gordon is in the know and will take you to where the crowd isn't.

Zena, it was a real pleasure showing you and your daughter around the hidden jazz haunts of Harlem. I think we were lucky that most people were still in shock over the election results and stayed home giving us the best seats. I'm still in shock, but live jazz is my antidote to lunatic political realities. Peace, Gordon More

Amanda was a wonderful host. She took us to two amazing Jazz clubs in Harlem. We got prime tables for diner right near the stage. We would not have been able to find these places without her. Amada provided informative jazz history with a lot of background information.

Thanks for sharing your love of Amanda and her Harlem jazz scene. We are lucky to have her grace our tours with her unique combination of sass, smarts, and service - not to mention her talents as a singer! Peace, Gordon More

I have lived in the Harlem area for years and honestly did not know many of the things that Amanda showed me on this tour. From finding landmarks to learning the rich history of the speakeasies to getting into some great, fun establishments, my partner and I had an absolute blast. Highly recommend this tour and this lovely exuberant guide... More

What an amazing birthday treat to go on a jazz tour with Amanda Humes! Even though I've lived in NYC for nearly half of my life, I'd never really explored this part of Harlem. Amanda is incredibly knowledgable, engaging, and hilarious (I've found myself repeating her "did you know" spiel many times since our tour). And we saw some amazingly... More

Staying in Midtown

Neighborhood Profile
Midtown
This is the iconic New York that so many visitors imagine before they visit - spectacular skyscrapers like the Chrysler Building and Empire State Building, iconic public buildings like Grand Central Terminal and the New York Public Library, and the non-stop hustle and bustle of the city streets. Fifth Avenue is a shopper's paradise where you can find every kind of store imaginable, with fashion brands ranging from the affordable to the ultra-fancy. Visit Rockefeller Center to experience towering Art Deco grandeur, and foodies will love the busy restaurants that stay open late in Koreatown. After dark, Midtown calms down a bit, but at any time of day or night it still feels 100% New York.
