Neighborhood: Midtown
This is the iconic New York that so many visitors imagine before they visit - spectacular skyscrapers like the Chrysler Building and Empire State Building, iconic public buildings like Grand Central Terminal and the New York Public Library, and the non-stop hustle and bustle of the city streets. Fifth Avenue is a shopper's paradise where you can find every kind of store imaginable, with fashion brands ranging from the affordable to the ultra-fancy. Visit Rockefeller Center to experience towering Art Deco grandeur, and foodies will love the busy restaurants that stay open late in Koreatown. After dark, Midtown calms down a bit, but at any time of day or night it still feels 100% New York.

The Rockerfeller Center is not far away and there is also a subway station close by. It is a magnificent building from the outside with some beautiful architecture and stained glass windows to admire. Well worth pausing to have a look as you pass by.Visited October 2023Traveled soloWritten December 16, 2023

St Thomas is an Episcopalian Church. Rebuilt in 1915 after the previous church was destroyed by fire. The architecture is late Gothic Revival. I was able to admire the exterior only, but photos of the interior appear beautiful and worth a look inside.Visited May 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten April 1, 2024

I'm pleased I went inside as it was a beautiful building and reminded me of churches in England. Visitors tend to go inside St Patricks across the street, but this is a more intimate space and less crowded.Visited July 2024Traveled soloWritten July 14, 2024
- Eva TUnited Kingdom4,986 contributionsWonderful churchSt Thomas Church is Church of England built in 1913 in Gothic Revival style. We were amazed by it - it's not very much decorated like other churches but there are stunning stained glassed windows - 33 of them, absolutely stunning High altar and wood carving on the pulpit and lectern showing craftmanship of its creators. When we visited it the choir was rehearsing so we just sit for a while and listened. Because of great acoustics they organize there concerts of classical music - unfortunately there was none during our stay in NYC. I highly recommend visiting it.Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten July 30, 2024

We had visited the church in the past for it's architecture and history, but had the opportunity to purchase tickets to a concert performed on their beautiful, historical pipe organ. The church was quite packed. They began promptly which I enjoy. The performer did an amazing job of introducing each piece with a great description of what to expect in sounds from the instrument, as well as the history of the piece. While I wish at least part of the program were pieces that the general public may have recognized, the performance was great. The restrooms at the church entrance are very small, only two people at a time, and there were many waiting in long lines after the performance. Some of the church staff were motivating people to leave so they could close the church. I don't know if that was proper.

My wife is from Brooklyn and my first trip to New York City was in 1961. We must have walked past this church countless times while on 5th Avenue. Walking back from 45th Street, we entered to both take a look and warm up from the low 30s weather. What a surprise! First off, the interior is beautiful (and I've been in numerous Roman Catholic churches in the U.S. and Europe). The church has three organs, of which one was being played while we were there. The music was wonderful and added to the beauty of the church. Don't wait . . . stop in and see (and hopefully hear the music).

Beautiful church. We went inside for some warmth and silence. It was wonderful to sit there and take in the incredible carvings that make up the main altar. I would have loved to hear a choir or someone play the organ but this was a spontaneous early morning visit.

This is a beautiful, huge, church with a very remarkable altar and plenty of stain glass windows. The rose stain glass window at the back of the church over the organ is especially beautiful. This church is definitely worth visiting.

It is a Gothic style Church, made of limestone and sandstone. In the interior nave you can see the coffered ceiling of the oak with representations of Greek elements. We find a Memorial that remembers the victims of the Second World War and, on the other hand, another Memorial with the victims of the Great War. While the architecture is related to French Gothic, the altars are related to English Gothic. What catches our attention most is the enormous altarpiece, which looks like it is made of ivory. In a corner those killed by the 9/11 attack are remembered. It has a majestic organ and they give Concerts, which unfortunately, we could not attend due to lack of time. The arrangements that are being made to prepare it for the upcoming celebration of the 200th anniversary of its foundation prevented us from enjoying it in its entirety.

Absolutely beautiful place, superb carvings and decorations. Worth a visit. You must pass a small security checkpoint (which is strange because the St Patrick's Cathedral nearby is not that hard to get in and a lot more people) but very nice.

Does the stain glass above altar allow in natural light? I understand that church is tightly situated against adjacent buildings which block natural light.
