Interesting alternative to Mid town Manhattan

Fascinating buildings and shops, ranging from designer outlets to quirky left overs from the 60's. Prices reflected this being lower than the centre of NY

Apparently, in the 60s, the 8th Street was the closest New York got to San Francisco's hippie Haight Street. I actually found it to be one of the most expensive neighborhoods in New York, however definitely the best place for catching a jazz show or concert!

Greenwich Village is a great area to wander around and take in the sights, but you should really eat in one of the great restaurants that are located here.

This is a must visit particularly for LGBT visitors. It is home to the famous Stonewall Inn known for the Stonewall riots. There are a good number of gay bars and clubs. It is a good place for anyone to visit however.

In England our definition of Village includes a relaxing environment that is scenically pretty and pleasing with its own distinct community, totally the converse of a typical town or city. Well strangely enough Greenwich Village seems to fit all of this and it's in the middle of Manhattan! Absolutely love this place - this city never fails to surprise. The... More

The Village is known for the many artists and bohemians who lived there in the past. Today, the village still has a different feel to it - it has a groovy atmosphere. It is fun walking around the streets, looking at the typical New York buildings and visit the little stores. There are many restaurants, cafes and bars - the... More

We followed a walk in our guide book, it was hot on the day so tiring. There is a lovely park area with free music and places to sit.

This place is amazing and a real must see for anyone, in the summer or in the winter it is so gorgeous. The steps up to all the houses are a great place to have a quick picture taken

Staying in Greenwich Village

Neighborhood Profile
Greenwich Village
Commonly known as “the Village” to New Yorkers, it was here in Greenwich Village that both 1960’s counter culture and the LGBT movement were born. Famous for its bohemian past, head to Washington Square Park to get a feel for this diverse and energetic neighborhood. You’ll find NYU students, street performers, skateboarders, kids frolicking in the fountain, and locals relaxing and playing chess. Stroll the streets to discover a mix of majestic town homes and hidden bars and restaurants that give this neighborhood an old-school residential feel. When the sun goes down, check out one of the famous jazz or comedy clubs that still packs them in every night.
