There are two statues in Times Square which probably very few people pay attention to which is a shame. One of the statues is of Father Duffy who I had previously never heard of.

There is a statue of him in Times Square to commemorate the work he did as a chaplain during the First World War.

I hope more people look this man up on Google and find out the amazing work he did whilst on their visit to Times Square as well as taking selfies.

If I hadn't fallen into the corner of the statue, I wouldn't have known who he was? But I got to know this :)

Did you know?
"Francis Patrick Duffy (May 2, 1871 – June 27, 1932) was a Canadian American soldier, Roman Catholic priest and military chaplain. Duffy served as chaplain for the 69th Infantry Regiment (known as the "Fighting 69th"), a unit of the New York Army National Guard largely drawn from the city's Irish-American and immigrant population. He served in the Spanish–American War (1898), but it is his service on the Western Front in France during World War I (1917–1918) for which he is best known.
Duffy, who typically was involved in combat and accompanied litter bearers into the thick of battle to recover wounded soldiers, became the most highly decorated cleric in the history of the United States Army." (Wikipedia)

It may appear as one of the most incongruous statues in The Big Apple, but this statue of the most decorated military chaplain in US history is superb. Right there in Times Square where discount Broadway tickets are now sold, you'll find this superbly crafted bronze of a Catholic priest who served in both the Spanish-American War and World War I. Given numerous medals for valor and service by the US and France, Father Duffy reminds everyone having a good time that there is a price for freedom which we all need to pay from time to time!

There are two monuments at Father Duffy Square including this statue of Father Francis Patrick Duffy which was created by American sculptor Charles Keck and unveiled here in 1937.

Duffy was a military chaplain who served in the Spanish-American War and WWI. He then became a chaplain in the Times Square area and served over a decade before passing away in 1932.

The monument of Duffy depicts the man as a soldier-priest in military garb with a bible in his hand. He stands before a Celtic Cross with numerous engravings on the back of Duffy's decorated service record.

This is something of a unexpected and nice monument to see in this bright and energetic area of the city, as is the George M. Cohan Statue not far in front of the Father Duffy monument. Give them both a few minutes to enjoy before continuing onward with intended sightseeing in the area.

The accolades he received from more than one country speaks volumes of the lives he touched during his own life. The statue gives brief history, but GOOGLE him to get the full story.

I wish it was lit or something so you can read at night what’s on it. It is hard to see this statue at night because everything else around is lit but this statue. Maybe some up lighting or maybe even some little fence to add importance to this permanent statue on this part of Time Square

My teen daughter wanted to visit New York City for the first time so we went there for two days. I think the best way to see this area is at night since that is really when all the signs show their true colors. This place is really crowded with tourists so if you get any anxieties with crowds then this place is not for you. If you get up early (about 06:00) in the morning you get the see everything except the crowds.

This is a very busy place with lots of tourists. The huge ads are incredible but can be overwhelming. There is quite a bit of police presence and people were generally polite. There was incredible tap dancing show at the time and I really enjoyed it. Free entertainment is always good as the shows are expensive otherwise.
