Being former New Yorkers we always look for something novel to do when we come back to the city, so we thought about giving this place a try.
Upon entry we were asked for vaccination records and the one I have scanned for my daughter is old - doesn't have the second dose (although I have it at the hotel). They turned me away. I'm sure they allowed at least 50 people with a Mickey Mouse Club ID today, nobody even reads them.
I stepped aside trying to see if I could find it somewhere on my phone, only to be rudely asked to get out of the way by this "security" guy. Told him to F off and left.
For a family that has visited dozens of museums around the world, is fully vaccinated and abides by every single rule, that kind of treatment means one thing: we are never coming back and will make sure nobody we know does. From reading the reviews it looks like we won't be missing much anyway.

The New Museum of Contemporary Art has an eclectic collection of interesting & weird modern art in middle of Bowery district. Like most modern art, some of the galleries contains objects that looked like they had been pulled from a dumpster, and some galleries had interesting stuff. I enjoyed the current contemporary portraits done by Jordan Casteel. But not one but TWO whole floors of huge protest art by Peter Saul looked self-indulgent to me. And the tribute to lichen artwork lost me.
The contemporary computer-generated short films were also interesting. Note both the café & bookstore are currently still closed.

avante garde space with galleries on the 2,3,4th floors. your experience will very much depend upon what they are exhibiting at the time. they change exhibits about 3 times per year. we enjoyed the works of Robert Colescott (takes up one floor), the next floor was all videos so we skipped that, and then the last floor was a strange installation of a furry wall, a huge beaded curtain, and a mirrored wall sculpture. that was sort of cool for about 5 minutes. something to try but see what they are showing before you spend your time and money. good restaurants around!

This is the home for edgy, contemporary art for NYC. Always a place where one can see the best of cutting edge art. Now, they are in the midst of their triennial exposition, so there is art from young artists from around the world. The galleries are comfortable, the settings are good for the art, and there is room to adequately view the art without feeling crowded. The building is reasonably well-designed. The 7th floor space has wonderful views of lower Manhattan.
As you visit the New Museum, do check out the amount and quality of the graffiti in the area. In some senses, merely desecration, but also some is amazing in quality.

A small art museum - currently filled with a special exhibition of Judy Chicago - a feminist artist whose work spanned many decades. The exhibition is very well organized and displayed. For contemporary art lovers, well worth the visit.

I enjoyed Wangechi Muto show. The exhibit was as uplifting as it was powerful. The staff was also kind. A woman working in the gift shop said Mutu was a friendly artist. That was a bonus. It's one thing to make good art. It's harder to be a good person!

But not earth-shattering. $15 admission for a senior. It's got a small cafe and expensive souvenir shop. The staff is very friendly. I saw painter Jordan Casteel's show and it was magnificent. I would probably not go again unless I'd seen a review of a show that attracted me.

If you are in this neighborhood on Thursday evenings, the New Museum is a great place to pop in as it is pay what you wish from 7 - 9 PM. It is not as well known as many of the other museums, so I try to take most of my visitors here for an hour or two and then walk them around LES.

Though the architecture of this building is quite handsome, the exhibits are a testament to how "modern" art has completely lost its way during the last couple of decades to become pretentious, gadgety, and grotesquely superficial and often narcissistic. If you're really looking for the pleasure of contemporary art, go to the Whitney Museum instead and give this ridiculous place a miss.

This is a contemporary art museum that has recently opened in the trendy lower east side. Five floors of exhibitions and a viewing balcony of the skyline but only open on the weekend. Emphasis is on new media and video art installations.
