- hrobinson1114Nashville, Tennessee2,766 contributionsScenic, cheap, convenientI took the ferry mainly as another way to see NYC, though many use it for commuting. I went on a few different trips on a few different lines, all for 2.75 per ticket. Price is about the same as the subway, but the scenery is better! You can’t use a metrocard—you have to either buy tickets at the station, or using an app on your phone. Each one way ticket allows for 90 minutes on a ferry or transfers to another ferry. There is an additional dollar charge for bikes and there is also an unlimited 30 day pass. I sat up top, and those seats fill up quickly on nice days. I have to explain, however, that my ride was during phase I of reopening during COVID 19, so it was probably much less crowded than usual days. There are several routes and stations, though all routes converge at pier 11 at Wall Street. I rode the ferry all the way up to Rockaway beach, about an hour one way. I also took a short hop over to DUMBO. I plan to use the ferry again to visit Williamsburg. Other routes include Astoria and Soundciew/the Bronx. This is a fun and cheap way to get off the subway, enjoy some fresh air, and still get around. The app is easy to use to buy tickets.Visited June 2020Traveled on businessWritten June 15, 2020
- BrakiWorldTravelerBelgrade, Serbia17,519 contributionsThe best and cheapest river cruise I've ever hadTake the Astoria Line (AS) from Pier 11 in downtown Manhattan. You'll pay only around 3 $ per person for one of your most memorable river cruises. It runs all along the East river, stopping on several stations on both, Manhattan and Brooklyn side. Amazing views from the upper deck which had enough outside seating. The whole journey is around 45 min one way.Visited May 2022Written June 23, 2022
- Marvin GOgdensburg, New York1,101 contributionsA wonderful adventure on the water rather than schlepping on the subwayThe ferry service to Brooklyn & Queens was entirely new to us. Rather to schlep for an hour with transfers on the subway, we took a absolutely wonderful ride from the 35th Street Pier to the Brooklyn Navy Yard on our way to our nephew's home in Fort Greene. This trip took a total of about fifteen minutes. The boat had a catamaran type hull which provided stability and very little resistance to wave action that full-hulled boats encounter. The ferry had both indoor and outdoor seating like on a double-decked bus. There was also food service for snacks and drinks. Not only was it fast but the fares rivaled those on buses and the subway. Once you exited the ferry, you were met at the ramp by an electric golf cart like car to take you to the end of the pier where you were deposited at the entrance of a "mall" with boutiques and restaurants. You walked thru and there was both guest parking and access to the neighborhood. We took the ferry to the Brooklyn Navy Yard. However, you could go to Long Island City, Astoria, and Roosevelt Island on this specific line. The boats were clean and comfortable. We enjoyed looking at the New York and outer borough skylines as well as the bridges spanning the East River. The ride was delightful. I would take it even if you are not getting off at any stops just for the sheer delight of the trip. The NYC Ferry is fast and efficient. Try it, even for the fun of it. You will be happy.Visited June 2021Written June 19, 2021

A pleasure to ride! This ferry service has put Rockaways on the map here in NYC. In 2017 NYC invested heavily in this world class transportation in the city and Bam! Now in the summer the ferries are packed with so many people that the boats have to double routs to handle the crowds. The ferries are clean and modern. They are very comfortable with stainless steel and very powerful engines. It s a great thing for all of New York. And if you come here to Big Apple, we wholehearted recommend riding on this world class ferry! A great experience!Visited May 2021Traveled with familyWritten January 15, 2022

The tickets are easy to purchase from the little ticket machines right near the pier. You can use cash or card tickets cost $2,75 per person which is good value. The queuing system is a little confusing although a local helped us with which queue we needed to be in, but there were still plenty of other people in the wrong queue and they ended up flooding over once they realised. The boat drops you off at “Wall Street pier 11” Wall Street is a short walk away. The boat was very clean and well kept and it was a quick service only taking a few minutes to get back over to downtown Manhattan.Visited July 2022Traveled as a coupleWritten July 24, 2022

After a crowded and disappointing trip on a Staten island ferry with no outside deck, we found this at St. George’s on Staten Island. It was an awesome way to get back to midtown and so much nicer than the subway- for $4 a person we got from Staten Island past the Statue of Liberty to 38th St with great views up the Hudson along the way. The shuttle in Rockaway doesn’t wait for the boat to arrive, so I had another long wait for that. On the way back to Manhattan, the boat canceled but no employees were there to tell the crowd. If you have to get to Rockaway from the city, just take the A train. The ferry service sucks. Running an efficient ferry service is way beyond what NYC is capable of doing.Visited May 2022Traveled as a coupleWritten May 21, 2022

Tourists beware, the people working here either don’t know what they’re doing or they don’t care. We showed up 10 min early, stood in the line for the ferry we wanted where it said “line starts here” and they never got us to board. Furthermore I SAW the ferry line we wanted and asked if it was the direction we wanted to go and was told no, that’s not come yet.
Seriously I talked to no less than 5 uniformed employees while we waited asking for help to get on the right one. This station was not busy so there’s really no excuse for their incompetence. We ended up taking a Lyft to the stranger things experience and have 3 ferry tickets we won’t use. Do NOT take the ferry to the stranger things experience.

NYC ferries are an excellent option vs. taking the subway to many locations in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens. While popular with tourists, these ferries are public transit not tour boats. The staff seems to operate under the assumption that everybody understands the system. Please be aware that ticket machines only take cards not cash. While the machine have screens in English and Spanish you may still be prompted in English that the card was not read or that it needs to be inserted again. The signage could be better. There are different lines on the docks for different routes. Be sure you read the small sign as you enter the queue. I did not see any signs from the boat indicating your location as you go from dock to dock.
If you are using the ferry for the first time I suggest having a route map to help you navigate the system. If you need help just ask somebody on board; more than likely somebody will be able to help you, even if you ask in a language other than English.

We stayed 10 days and used the ferries once a day. Great way to travel and see the skyline. Comfortable, on time, no delays (unlike the subway), friendly and helpful staff, you couldn't wish for more.
$4 a two hour validity or $2.75 if you buy 10 tickets.

Can anyone recommend a nice ferry excursion from the Upper East Side 90th Street? It would be nice to disembark somewhere that has a nice view or is an interesting destination. Maybe where we can walk around a bit, have a bite to eat, then return. Any interesting destinations you can recommend?
Thanks.

I'm from the UK and if I use the NYC ferry App on my phone to buy tickets when I come to use them (in Red Hook Brooklyn) I will have no WIFI or cell service, so will they be available to me to use when I am offline?
Second question, we will be there on a Sunday. I presume the ferry is not too crowded then and that there is no risk of it being to full to get on?

Yes you can buy paper tickets even on board, in a kiosk or a snack bar as you enter. Yes there are machines o. The piers, but in my case it didn't accept cash, so I boug t on board. Yes people who use ferry more frequently then me, told me that it's more crowded on weekends.

How can I get from Brooklyn stop on the ferry to Brooklyn Heights Promenade? I know the Squibb Bridge is currently closed.
Thanks. I love the New York Ferry--took it to Rockaway last year.
