Once a busy industrial area, then a Manhattan nightlife staple, the Meatpacking district has unfortunately been thoroughly gentrified.
There are still a few overpriced bars in the area, mostly associated with hotels. I would actually highly recommend the standard bar mostly for its view over the city and river but if you’re looking for nightlife, go elsewhere, even to nearby Chelsea, or better yet Brooklyn.
There is one small block on the edge of the district with the remaining couple of meat distribution companies, don’t expect a working suburb.
Worth a visit to look at the old warehouses or perhaps do some designer shopping if you’re into that.

This is our first visit to the Meatpacking District. We came for a visit to the Lucid Studio. Plenty of old architecture in this neighborhood. Many of the old meatpacking plants were converted to restaurants, trendy stores, art galleries with apartments above.
My favorite part of this neighborhood was the cobblestone streets. Seeing the cobblestone makes you think of the times of horse and buggy.
The neighborhood was very busy and bustling on a warm spring Sunday. No shortage of bars, restaurants, and coffee shops.
Note: This neighborhood is accessible by bus. Subways are a decent walk east.

This neighborhood is at one end of the High Line, so it is easy to find. I remember when it was very sketchy and unsafe. Not any more! Now it is full of Prada and the like, so lots of high end shopping and expensive cocktails. You can see the old classic warehouse architecture repurposed into luxury.

What has happened to the Meatpacking district is sickening. It was once home to the great Hellfire club and Lee Brewsters boutique. There was Mothers at Jackie 60 and all kinds of wild Street life. All now gone to make room for wealthy scum.

This is an incredible neighborhood to explore with family and friends. After a nice walk on the high line we end up here. You can find a variety of great restaurants and shops in a traditional low rise area. I truly recommend.

Tip 1: A complete rip-off. I have to say everything sold in this premise is overpriced. Boutiques are selling $20 for a pair of undies and a made in china teeshirt for $100. I suppose half of the tripadvisors are budget travellers who just wants to see the world as much as you can. It is just not worth spending $50 for a meal!
Tip 2: Prepare to pay $10 for a small bowl of salad, $20 for a drink and you will have a tough time looking for some decent cheap food.
Tip 3: Meatpacking District seems like more of a chill out place for youngsters and hippies. If you are a budget traveller, then dont worry about spending your entire afternoon there.
Tip 4: What my friend and i did was we walked towards the street carts parked on the streets for lunch. We both bought a $6 falafel and lamb over rice and it filled us up for the whole afternoon. I personally feel that you can visit this area just for an eye-opening experience but in terms of spending your lunch money there, it is just not worth it. Same goes to Chelsea Market, price of food is ridiculous and way too ex. Search for the nearest street cart when you are out and about. It will help you save a lot on expenses.

The Meatpacking District is an energetic, thriving & interesting area to visit. The old architecture gives the whole are a wonderful look & feel. It is undergoing excellent rejuvenation in many areas and there are many wonderful restaurants to eat in. Most highly recommended!

It's definatly one of the most active colorful and fashionable districts of town.
Great at the summer and winter as well ( a rainy day will also work for you well!)
Walk in the streets but don't forget to get in to the Chelsea market and if the weather allows you, of course climb up the stairs to the high lines for a great walk on the roofs of the city.
Alow 2-3 hours great for a lounch or even dinner -therefore you may plan to go there in the morning or at noon or when the evening comes. Be aware of the opening hours of the stores which are sometimes limited to eight or 7:00 PM

Before it was destroyed by the upscale retail destinations like PASTIS and JEFFREY, the meatpacking district was an actual meatmarket with low buildings, one or two small restaurants, beautiful Hudson River light and peculiar ladies (gentlemen) of the night who paraded up and down the cobblestoned streets. It's a hellish place now. Most of the meat packing companies have been pushed out and into the Bronx, and building codes have been twisted to allow for enormous new office buildings hotels, and SOHO-like boutiques. When Keith McNally complained that the market was "over", he didn't include the fact that he had helped make it so.
RIP, Meatpacking District.
RIP, Meatpacking District.

This charming and gritty neighborhood is a fascinating mixture of industry, art and design. Meatpackers working the cobblestone streets next to galleries and crafty boutiques filled with undiscovered wonders. This is the real deal and a "must see". NOTE: You won't find any of the more pedestrian chain stores that have spilled into Soho (at least not yet) so an excursion to the neighborhood is like an adventure. Perfect place to pack it all in - shop, eat, drink in a 5 block area.

Is Meatpacking District a good base for accommodation for first timers to NY? We plan to stay about 3 weeks in NY and have heard many good things! A lot of reviews talk about bars , clubs and great food. But what about as an accommodation base to explore NY ?

I love this area as a home base for exploring the city! Many types of accommodations available from awesome hotels to air b&b's to smalll city inns. The Highline is close by and a great way to experience nearby neighborhoods.

Qual a distância entre o meatpacking e greenwich village?
Written May 20, 2017

Worth seeing. Lots of action, bar scenes restaurants shopping. Shopping is mostly high end, expensive men and women's wear. Lots of street vendor shopping. The Apple Store is here too. Quaint. Cobble stone streets wear sensible shoes.

Can anyone tell me if the meatpacking district has good/busy bars and clubs on a Sunday through to a Wednesday night? Going NYC on Sun 8 Nov x
Written October 8, 2015
The meatpacking district is one of the hottest--and most expensive--are of NYC with plenty going on almost continuously. Besides the bars and clubs, there are a number of excellent restaurants. Of course don't miss the High Line park, and the extraordinary new Whitney Museum--at the foot of the High Line--has an excellent restaurant, best for lunch.
