About
The circular Frank Lloyd Wright-designed building is as much of a draw as the museum's collection of modern art.

Top ways to experience Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum
The area
Address
Neighborhood: Upper East Side
Combining quiet residential neighborhoods that have easy access to Central Park with world-famous cultural institutions, the Upper East Side is one of the most livable places in the city. Along beautiful Fifth Avenue, you’ll find Museum Mile, which houses many of the nation's most famous attractions in a single stretch, like The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Guggenheim Museum. Walk a few blocks into the neighborhood, and you’ll come to Park Avenue, the poshest address in the city, lined with grand apartment buildings as far as the eye can see. Even if you can’t afford the luxury goods along Madison Avenue, it’s still a great spot to window shop an afternoon away.

What a disappointment. Currently half the building is shut including the spiral staircase. Only 3 floors are open and there is very little art work on show. It takes very little time to see round and despite a reduction in ticket price , it still is not worth the money. The best bit by far is the Frank Lloyd Wright designed building but we wasted a fair amount of money taking a taxi to it. Wait until it reopens

While the museum was in the middle of a rehang, the staff were very quick to explain what was, and wasn’t on show, with a reduced admission price. Lovely little exhibits of 1960s minimalism and color field paintings as well as the Thannhauser collection. Shop overpriced.

I went on the "name your price" day and time since I was not really interested in this kind of art but more on the building.
This Frank Lloyd Wright masterpiece is something you must visit while in New York.
I was very disappointed by the fact that the exhibition starts from the bottom of the spiral even if the architect's concept for the building is to take the lift and visit it from the top to the bottom. I just did the exhibition reverse since I was more interested in the building.

We went for the architecture, and that did not disappoint. I have the LEGO version at home and it was great to experience the atrium IRL. However, there was very little art, as the entire building was dedicated to a special exhibit “Countryside, The Future” — unlike some other reviews here, I found it less heavy-handed on the climate change front than I expected after we arrived (though that was there, as it should be) and I learned some interesting things along the way. But it wasn’t what I expected and definitely not for everybody - especially if you were geared up to look at some art! Two rooms from their permanent collection were all they had on display. Although I enjoyed it to some degree, I would not recommend it above the other museums I have visited in NYC.

From what I had learned about this museum in the past was that they used to have thousands of art pieces all along the walls of the spiral ramp. That is all gone. One floor had a very small collection of French Impressionistic paintings, another floor had a temporary exhibit of photographic nudes, another floor had a display of nooses and ugly Jackson Pollock paintings, and finally another floor had a room full of pandemic-era artwork by local elementary school students! I paid $25 to look at artwork by kids when they were stuck at home??? Really? This is what the Guggenheim is offering patrons? If I wanted to look at artwork by 3rd graders, I could have just stayed home and looked at the walls of my own kids’ rooms! Now, let’s compare the art of elementary school kids to Jackson Pollock, who, in his madness, just sloshed cans of paint on to canvas laid on his garage floor. I’m no fan, obviously. But, really Guggenheim, maybe you should charge everyone a donation fee because $25 is excessive to look at artwork by local 2nd and 3rd graders.

At the start of our five week return to NYC we decided to tackle the Guggenheim first. It has changed in presentation since last visit fifteen years ago. I believe for the better. On entry there was no queue for us so able to get access immediately and started at the top floor to descend slowly looking at the display. The arrangement is that there was a temporary expo of paintings and sculptures selected by established artists, not of their work but that which has inspired them or that they like. Some examples well known, other for us not known at all. A great opportunity for us to see.
We found it very stimulating and it should be a good example for other galleries to follow to expose where sources have commenced or been influenced. Well worth seeing but I think finished already. The permanent collection remains available too, in the extension. An enjoyable visit at the start of our trip.

I like modern art museums, and I saw some fantastic Chagalls and Kandinskys, which are some of my favorites when I go to art museums. But there was significant renovation going on, and there were only 3 rooms open in the whole museum. What I saw was decent, but not amazing, and it probably would have been cooler if it wasn't under renovation...though to be honest, I'm a bit skeptical about just how much.
Honestly, the most exciting part of my visit was realizing it was the building Will Smith ran up to catch the alien in the beginning of Men in Black.

Unfortunately a lot of the museum was closed whilst they were setting up a new display but what we saw was quite interesting. I wouldn’t bother visiting again. The coffee was awful and again as seems every where in New York in plastic or paper cups.

The Guggenheim Museum is without doubt the most interesting building in New York City. The Chrysler Building is distinctive and the Empire State Building may be more popular, but no other building shows the imagination of Frank Lloyd Wright's Guggenheim Museum, The Guggenheim is the triumph of Modernism, both in its construction and collection. The collection ranges from Impressionism to Contemporary art. The fascinating aspect of the building is that it is larger on top than it is at the base. it resembles a ribbon. Frank Lloyd Wright was the consummate exponent of architectural Modernism, and this was his crowning achievement. The Guggenheim Museum is in the Upper East Side of New York City, on Fifth Avenue. Solomon Guggenheim's ambition, of promoting the appreciation of Modern Art, has been exceeded; the Modern is now mainstream.

Of all the museums and galleries we've visited in New York, this one was the most disappointing. The architecture was interesting and maybe worth seeing. The rest was just so-so. Staff weren't really excited to be there, the displays were boring. They had a couple side exhibits with some art that were actually the best parts of the place.

We visited on a Saturday in August 2019, there was a very short line to purchase tickets, and museum was not super crowded, and we were able to see all exhibits without any problem.

Hello
I have heard the ramp will be closed in September.
Can you please let me know which dates?
Solomon R Gugge... M
New York City, NY
Hi Cameron, the museum ramps will be open through September 12. After that, the ramps will be closed until October 12 so we can prepare for the upcoming exhibitions “Hilma af Klint: Paintings for the Future” and “R. H. Quaytman: + x, Chapter 34." Admission will be reduced 9/14-10/10 (we're closed on Thursdays), and “One Hand Clapping” and our permanent collection will remain on view in the Tower galleries. (More information about what's on view on our website.) Whenever you make it here, we hope you enjoy your visit!
