A hidden gem of a bridge all tourists shoul
May 2020
This bridge is a hidden gem if you want to connect to Wards/Randalls Island and then on to Astoria. I would recommend the walk unreservedly as it is a healthy alternative to the JFK Bridge. I do a walk every summer to get to Astoria and it is a very healthy and fun alternative for those who like scenic views of Manhattan, Queens and the Amtrak running over little
Hell Gate. You even can connect to the Bronx.

A great bridge for walkers and bikers

Wards Island is crossed by the Triborough and Hell Gate bridges. The island can be reached by the Triborough Bridge; the Wards Island Bridge, which serves pedestrians and bicyclists and links the island to East Harlem in Manhattan.

I often visit the island over the 103rd Street walkway from Harlem or the walkway along the East River. Very easy walking and with great views, not only of the city, but of many of the types of people who live and play here.

Once on the island it is possible to see several species of birds, including some marsh birds in three little coves.

This bridge is also a draw bridge, and it is a great thrill to see it in motion -- and a bit of a pain depending on which side I have ended up.
