The buildings here are beautiful! A lot of history in this area. Busy but not too crowded. You can sit & look or walk from building to building. Transportation is easy to catch in this area.

Nice little oasis in the financial district. A break from bricks and steel. Take a few minutes to chill.

When waiting for a walking tour of the area, arrived early and walked to Foley Square in the evening when heard music, found the Lesbian & Gay Big Apple Corps Rehearsing in the square and spent an enjoyable hour listing to the practise.

These court and other office buildings (Thurgood Marshall United States Courthouse + New York County Supreme Court) do not belong to the usual tourist attractions, Unless someone looks at a lot of law and orders TV series and just jumps as our protagonist sits on the stairs of this building :)

The square is surrounded by grand buildings and it would be easy to miss the small memorial plaque tucked away in the park which is named in his honour. This was Thomas Paine who wrote about the ‘common sense’ of equality of human beings, challenging the nonsense of the privileged position of royalty played a crucial part inspiring American Independence. He. also wrote about the Rights of Man in support of the French Revolution. He used reasoned argument to good effect. It struck me that this approach is in short supply in current times where personal opinion, however ill informed dominates discourse. Reading about him inspired me to follow up with further research, not the least so as to improve my own thinking. So apparently he continues to inspire all those years later.

This square is defined by monumental government buildings and an abstract fountain in Lower Manhattan's Civic Center area. I felt that I really knew the New York City Supreme Court structure because of its steps, used for years on the TV series, "Law and Order." But this building's neighbor, the Thurgood Marshall United States Courthouse, was even bigger and more imposing.

The stark, black-granite abstract sculpture, "Triumph of the Human Spirit," serves as the square's centerpiece. Part of a fountain, the sculpture looks out at the buildings and soars to a height of 50 feet. It symbolizes freedom and endurance.

I did not find the square to be an appealing place to linger, though it is perhaps OK for a takeout lunch by those, who work in the vicinity. My preference would be the City Hall Park, which is about a 5-minute walk away.

If your a Law and Order fan, its a great photo opt.
Also great at people watching during the spring and the fall. Tourist watching during the summer. More than likely someone is going to ask you how to get to Chinatown.
For the history buff, the area use to be part of 5 Points Neighborhood and before that the area use to be a fresh water pond before it got polluted.
On 09/11/2001, the square was used as triage center.
At and around the square, it have a lot of history.
Depending the time of the year there are some kind of activity going on.
From a start/end of a marathon to a movie production to some protest.

If you are a Law & Order fan, it is worth a visit to see the famous courthouse. There is also a beautiful sculpture in the middle of Foley Square titled The Triumph Of The Human Spirit. Highly recommend if you are nearby!

"Triumph of the Human Spirit" by Lorenzo Pace is neat. It was also nice seeing the pretty architecture of the government buildings.
