- Jeremiah ZRoseville, Minnesota3,085 contributionsAmazing Hikes and Dark SkiesThis park was the highlight of our family vacation to Northern NM this past summer. We arrived around 8:30am at the visitor center and immediately drove up to the parking lot up on the rim. We hiked the Crater Rim and Vent trails (1.5 mi. RT) around the rim and into the center of the volcano and our 3 yo had a blast. The sweeping views are incredible everywhere you look on top of the rim. We returned to the visitor center around 10:30am, and my wife and daughter relaxed at the visitor center while I hiked the other two lower elevation trails in the park. The Lava Flow Trail (1 mi. RT) was ok, but I didn't think it was anything special. The Boca Trail (2 mi. RT) was spectacular, especially near the Quaking Aspen Overlook. There was so much to see on this trail and I couldn't believe mid-day on a summer Saturday I didn't see another person on the trail. Definitely an overlooked hike as most people just hike the Rim Trail and move on. Later in the evening, we returned to the park for a Dark Sky Program where astronomers allowed us to view galaxies, stars and nebulas through their telescopes. It was magical and we can't believe how amazing the night skies were on that clear sky night! It's a moment our family will cherish forever.Visited June 2023Traveled with familyWritten October 13, 2023
- Sue LMyrtle Beach, South Carolina831 contributionsAbsolutely unexpected place to visit.Never, ever, ever did we ever expect that this site....this old extinct volcano, had a road you could drive (2 miles) to get to the top, park and look around. One of our favorite spots to visit during this bucket list trip. Views were outstanding. Park staff incredibly helpful. You could even hike the rim of this old volcano. Doing some road work right now, ?cause of?, so there is a stop light to control traffic flow for about 500 ft or so. No issues, but what a view!Visited November 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten November 21, 2023

Views from area were spectacular. We did not hike to the rim because it was very windy and pretty cold. But, parts of trail we could see from upper parking lot looked well maintained.Visited April 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten April 16, 2024

Niko made our visit, he was friendly and funny. Love the drive to the top and the little museum before we headed up, It was windy but well worth the hike to the center and the hike around the rim. What a view and we even saw some deer.Visited April 2024Traveled with familyWritten April 17, 2024
- Susanne TNorth Carolina Mountains, North Carolina1,917 contributionsAmazing views! At entrance sign is a post for the perfect selfie with the sign. The visitor center is very nice and has a good short movie for information. We drove up to the parking lot, which is not very big and hiked the rim trail. It is very steep in parts, but the views were amazing! We wish we had bug spay since the gnats were really bad. Wear good shoes and bring water. I am glad we did the hike.Visited May 2024Traveled with familyWritten May 22, 2024
- Susie L42 contributionsVolcano in New MexicoWe just got lucky & saw a sign talking about a volcano. Decided to go check it out & so glad we did. You have to check in & buy a permit to drive up to the top. Which it's $20 per vehicle. But that's good for a year to get into any national state park. It's extremely fascinating & absolutely gorgeous views. There's 2 trails you can take. One goes down & one goes up. I'm not able to do that anymore but I sure would have if I could have. The one that goes up says it can take 90 minutes but it looks like it would be worth it. I think the one going down was 15 minutes. Another must see.Visited June 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten June 8, 2024
- Bernard WDallas, Texas1,930 contributionsPay attention to timing and weatherOpen 8-5:30 pm. The parking lot by volcano closes 5:15 pm; Visitor Center closes 5:30 pm. Stargazing twice a month during summer about ½ hour after sunset. Visitor Center has a movie and area displays. Don’t go up when lightning in the area. Otherwise, a hike on the crater’s rim and down to the calder offer great area views of other volcanos and close-up views of botanic varieties.Visited June 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten June 30, 2024
- Connie LHouston, Texas211 contributionsA great experience! If you do nothing else, walk the short (but steep) trail into the volcano. It is well worth the walk! The view from the top over the surrounding area is amazing as well! Make sure if you are going to wear a hat that it has a tie down, even with our tie down hats, mine almost flew away on the way back up the volcano.Visited July 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten July 28, 2024

Very cool place to stop and explore.
First off admission is $20 a vehicle.
From their on their are a few things you can do. Most obvious is drive to the rim. It’s a cool drive spiraling up the side of the volcano. If you have passengers who are afraid of heights they might not enjoy it much but for those of us who like that and messing with those who don’t it was a lot of fun.
Once you get to the top their are a few options. You can park
And get out and read the informational signs and learn about the volcano formation and area. If that’s all you do it will take you 10-15 minutes and you are thru. You can also take 2 different hikes up there. The first is just a few hundred feet to the center of the volcano. Pretty easy little walk to the middle on a nicely paved trail.
The second is a trail that goes along the rim and makes it to the summit. It is also paved and is a little bit more strenuous, especially for us flatlanders just now getting acclimated to the the altitude. Plenty of benches and informative signs to pause at a catch your breath if needed. Interestingly there were literally 100’s of thousands of ladybugs on the trail. They gather around a certain type of plant after eating aphids. I actually thought it was just orange flowers for a few minutes the. Realized it was a clump of lady bugs. They were so cool. I highly recommend those two little hikes.
Do the short one first because you just might be too tired to do the second one even if it is a few hundred feet. :)
The third hike is at the bottom of the volcano and actually I don’t know where it ends. I don’t remember seeing the trail anywhere on our drive up so maybe it’s around the base of the volcano. I highly recommend this stop.
I think just getting the view at the top is worth the price but if you can throw in at least the smaller hike then for sure it is worth the money.

After a long drive we decided to stop at this site to stretch our legs! It is a quick drive from the highway. Purchase ticket at the visitor center. The cost is $20 per vehicle. After you purchase your ticket you can start the drive up the volcano! The drive to the summit of the volcano is short but very scenic! There are no rails on the road so do not take your eyes of the road when driving! At the top there is a small paved parking area. This area has bathrooms and sitting areas! There are two paved hiking trails. There is the center of the summit trail which is short walk to the center of the volcano. My kiddos who are ages 4 and 9 were able to make this hike easily. There is also the outer rim summit hike which is about a mile long. This trail is very scenic because you are able to see the outer views from the top of the volcano. The trail is very steep and requires a hint of physical stamina. I recommend that toddlers or elderly people not hike the outer rim unless they are used to steep and long hikes. Take a back pack with water, apply sunscreen, and wear a hat! Take your time because that hike is not an easy hike! The views are definitely worth the hike! Also talk to the friendly park ranger who knows everything about the volcano and surrounding areas!

Its a great drive around the side of Capulin volcano to the top. The visitor centre at the bottom is where you get the info and pay $20 to enter. Get a National Park pass which lasts for a year and is only $80, thats much better value. Good views and walks from the top. Its also a fab place for a picnic while you gaze out on the horizon.

when you arrive @ the national monument, the visitor center is where you pay a fee & get map to drive to the base of the volcano. this national monument allows you a scenic drive up to the volcano. there’s handful parking spots (15+) there with restrooms. at the top crest is a 1 mile long hike - it’s challenging for about 1/2 of it as you are hiking up the steep pathway around the crest but provides an amazing view of the landscape surrounding the area. there is also a walk down to the core of the volcano.

Hiking the rim of a dormant Volcano was the highlight of our recent vacation! It's $20 per car to drive up to the upper parking lot and the drive is a bit scary. It's narrow with not many guardrails but the view from the top is amazing!!! Once you get to the top there are 2 trails you can take. One is to the vent of the Volcano. It's only 0.2 miles but the hike back up is steep and strenuous. The rim hike is 1 mile long and definitely strenuous as well. We are not used to the elevation and got really winded. Be sure to take plenty of water because that elevation sneaks up on you quick! But the views from the rim are definitely worth the hike. The upper parking area has restrooms and a small sitting area. The visitor center at the bottom has restrooms and a gift shop. Be sure to stop here if you're in the area. We had an amazing time!

An excellent stop and well worth your time. Very friendly and supportive staff. They responded to my emails while I was planning our trip and that was much appreciated.
Enjoyable picnic area.
Great Sand Dunes National Monument has much to learn about how to deal with people and they could learn it from the staff at Capulin.

Go to the visitors center first to get a time to drive up as they meter in vehicles due to limited parking and road conditions. The drive up provides great views. Once up there is a short walk down to the bottom of the volcano. This is really cool. I have driven past this several times over many decades but never stopped. It was well worth the visit. Give yourself 1 - 2 hours total.

So glad I stopped here! The Capulin Volcano National Monument was something I never imagined I would explore, let alone hike. There are 5 Trails at the Monument. I hiked 4 of them. I would definitely start with the Nature Trail at the Visitor's Center (and talk for a moment with those amazing Rangers). The Nature Trail explains the vegetation in the area and why things look the way they do. Then I recommend the Lava Flow Trail and the scenic views of the Sierra Grande Viewpoint. Amazing! After that, head up to the rim - its a bit of an exciting drive up if you are even remotely concerned with heights (but still very doable). The Crater Rim Trail takes you up pretty high with a 12% grade at some points of the hike. But the views at the top of the Rim are worth it! Then the Crater Vent Trail down into the extinct volcano give you a pretty cool view of all the geology of the area.
Definitely put this on your list of things to explore if you're even remotely close to the area!

drove 60 miles out of my way because the National Park service failed to maintain the website for this National monument. at 5 p.m. on July 5th the gates were closed. This, despite their website saying the park was open until sunset.

Are there picnic tables here or a good spot for a picnic with kids?
Written June 2, 2018
I've just seen benches all over the volcano. No picnic tables actually

Hello: Would you say this trip is considered easy, moderate, hard. We are planning on taking the parents to see the volcano and they are in their 60s and but not used to the altitude in Colorado yet. Trying to decide if it is worth the 2 hour trip to New Mexico if one of them can't hike down or around the volcano. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thank you in advance.

If they can walk they can make it around. There are a lot of benches for rest spots. We did not find it difficult but do not have any limitations other than a bad knee. If they need assistance walking, they can see the video at the bottom and stay around the parking area at the volcano and look down and out while others walk around.

My car doesn't have 4 wheel drive, is on the smaller side, and although it's a used car, it's new to me (just bought in March 2017, 2015 Nissan Sentra). Will this be a problem in terms of driving? Should I be concerned or aware of anything, when driving around?
Written June 22, 2017
We will be driving through in about 2 weeks heading to Texas. We will be pulling a 5th wheel travel trailer. Is there an area near that we can unhook trailer and leave safely so we can drive truck up to top parking area?
Written March 15, 2017
Yes you can leave your trailer. They have an area in the parking area for you to do that. I have done it several times. This is a great attraction.
Written March 16, 2017
Does anyone know if pets are allowed. I couldn't locate this information on the Capulin Volcano NPS website.
Written August 4, 2015
I remember reading that pets are not allowed on the trails, but there were people with a small Cocker Spaniel heading up the rim while I was there in February, 2016. The ranger is all the way down at the base, so unless there is another ranger visiting the parking lot at the top, I'm not sure anyone would care if you are conscientious about cleaning up after your pet. I guess it depends on how adventurous and daring you care to be!

We are planning a drive from Dallas to Denver on our way to Yellowstone Park and would like to plan a visit to the Capulin Volcano.....
How must time should I allow to drive to the top and have a look around?
I am thinking of staying at Clayton and then visiting the volcano on my way to Denver or Colorado Springs.
Written January 30, 2015
By all means make time for a visit to Capulin. It only takes about 20 minutes to drive up the volcano, but I'd suggest taking at least an hour in the information center - watch the videos, look at exhibits, then drive to top. At top, it can take an hour if you walk the entire rim, perhaps longer, depending on your physical activity level. But you don't have to go all the way around so you can make the walk take as long as you have. The trail to the bottom is shorter, but much steeper climb out.
We love visiting Capulin - do it every trip. Fantastic views, great place to have a quick picnic lunch on your tail gate.
We also love Yellowstone - have you been viewing their webcams? Don't forget Teton National Park - better chance of seeing Moose there - take boat trip and take hike to HIdden Falls waterfall - in Jackson - don't forget the gunfight! it's a must, chapel of the Transfiguration, Baker Ewing raft trip - so much to do - not to mention ALL to see in Yellowstone. Enjoy :)
