My 19 year old daughter and I took this tour during our stay at the beach. We have done most of the major sites and activities over the past 15 years of coming here, but hadn't done this. It costs $13 a person, and you walk about a mile over the course of about 1 to 1/2 hours. This is one of two ghost tours they offer in Manteo. This is the general tours and is billed as the most popular. There is another tour by the same group that is supposed to be a kind of sequel to this one, including some good stories that just didn't make the cut for the first tour. We plan to go on that tour next year. I found the brochure in the large, popular welcome center just over the big bridge at the beginning of the Outer Banks, NC. When I telephoned, there was a recording describing both tours, advising of the costs, and asking me to leave a message with which tour, which date, and how many people. I did so, and the next evening a man called to confirm and advise us the address so I could program my GPS. I paid in cash and I believe they also take personal check. Arrived and parked on the street [free] and checked in. We all got a cute little ghost button to keep us safe during the tour. When I asked about finding a restroom prior to the tour, there really weren't many options, since the tour begins at 8:00 p.m. [be there 15 minutes early to check in and pay] and most shops are closed. They suggested maybe trying an adjacent surf shop that was still open, or better, to try the Theatre down the street since it was on the tour anyway; just show them your ghost button. We walked down there and a nice woman at the ticket window, who did not look like she was accustomed to doing this, let us in. The man behind the concessions counter made like we would have to pay him $5 if we weren't seeing a movie. We think he was joking but honestly, he seemed pretty serious and a bit grumpy. Perhaps some might enjoy this type of local flavor but, while I can take a joke, I really just wanted to go to the bathroom, so I found that annoying! Our tour guide, Keith, was really wonderful. He was dressed in a period costume and spoke in a sort of Olde English, kind of Irish, sort of drunken pirate dialect -- and it worked! There were maybe a half dozen major stories he told us, often involving local inns and individuals, and of course, the old nag's head ploy used by pirates to wreck ships so they could plunder them. He taught us how to get rid of a poltergeist if you, or some object, is plagued by one, and I learned some local facts like about the 400 year old scuppernong grape vine on Mother Vineyard road, which grows in someone's yard, and I photographed it the next day! It was a nice walk in the evening In Manteo, our tour group was made up of nice people and we all had a good time. There was a boy of about 10 on our tour with his parents, and I believe he got a little scared at one point, needing a hug, so maybe note the age and maturity of your kids before bringing them.

Matt was our guide - he did a great job. He is an awesome storyteller, putting a modern fun twist on all the historical info. The teens thought it was fun to hold the EMF detector, it went off several times, Matt took the time to point out false readings or possible legit readings. Ghosts are not guaranteed, obviously, but we went for the historical aspect, which was quite interesting. It was a very leisurely walk along streets & boardwalks, and there were benches to sit on in several places, so it’s good for all abilities. We went on a Monday, so we had a 50% off coupon from a welcome guide book. If you have a free night, do it. We had had 10 people in our party & we all thought it was fun. Lots of laughs. Glad we went. One person in our party got a spooky looking photo in the grove.

Our family booked this for the fun, and it is what we had. Our guide was dressed in period costume, we liked that from the beginning! He was a great storyteller, keeping our grandsons attention. He let us take his photo with our family at the end, he was very pleasant. It was longer than the 90 minutes, we liked that, he gave us a very good tour! We covered a lot of Manteo, but it wasn't too much walking, and at a good pace. We would return for another tour. Thank you for a great night out.

This was the worst tour that I’ve ever been on. The tour guide offered very little factual/historical data and told random stories the entire time that had little relevance to the outer banks. I considered leaving in the first 10 minutes because Diane was so monotone and dull. I didn’t pay $26 to be told to “bury something for a day if I think it might be haunted” and to hear about a supposed toilet seat shutting in a bed and breakfast.

We went on the walking Graveyard of the Atlantic tour and learned all about Blackbeard and the other pirates of the area. We really enjoyed it and never would have guessed that there was that much history regarding pirates tied into that area! Well worth the $13 each!

To be clear, I have previously reviewed the Original Ghost Tour. This review is on the followup tour called Ghost Tour Too and it is held on Thursday nights at 8 p.m. I reserved in advance but they can accept walk ups if the tour is not already too large. They have been doing this for 11 years, and our guide Keith has been with them from the start. He is a wonderful guide and dresses in period dress with a black suit, fancy vest, and top hat. He speaks in character with an accent that sounds to me like old English with a slightly lazy/intoxicated tone. It gives the atmosphere that an older local scamp is taking you under his wing to educate you on the local ghost stories. Lots of fun, very likeable and hilarious. On this tour, we walked beside the cemetery and were encouraged to take flash photos near graves and around the windows and doors of some homes, in hopes of finding orbs. Whether or not you believe that orbs are a natural phenomenon of flash photography or of spectral energies, it is fun. I especially enjoyed a couple of the stories that were different from the original tour and while it was kind of fun to hear some of the original tales from the first tour, I would liked to have heard more that were new. It is appropriate for children of some age, but maybe not very young ones. It is generally really family friendly and not too scary for most. As with any ghost tour anywhere, it goes better if the others on your tour are open-minded about the paranormal. Our tour included some poorly supervised older children and teens who were a bit noisy and occasionally a mite disrespectful, but this is something you must expect with a reasonably priced tour at $13 each. The guide handled them well since their parents did not see a problem. Do tip the guide as generously as you can! We are excited to go back next year for the 3rd tour which is called Graveyard of the Atlnatic and is about pirates and such!

We went with four people, no children. It was a lot of fun and left us wanting to explore other local lore. The guide was knowledgeable and entertaining. It was worth the trip and price.

My recent visit to the lovely North Carolina Outer Banks was greatly enhanced by a novel experience suggested by a group of friends who'd enjoyed it in the past. We spent a fascinating time with Ghost Tours of the Outer Banks, a wonderful walking exploration of legends and fact in this richly absorbing area. A dusty history book cannot compare with the friendly, helpful guide, who answered questions, offered entertaining tidbits, both real and fanciful, and reminded us that ghost stories are often close to the surface, whether about a person, place or animal. I'm already looking forward to returning there next summer and would love to plan a girlfriends' outing that includes Ghost Tours. You can tell how much care and pleasure goes into preparing and presenting this experience, one that I'd highly recommend to all who bring an open mind to the fun, the details, the ghostly pleasure.

For what it is, it is not a bad tour. It's really more historical but it is interesting. Manteo is quaint, small and has some beautiful buildings. It's a lot of walking, so wear comfortable shoes and be ready to walk a lot. Our party of four enjoyed it, but once you've been to Savannah, GA and Bonaventure Cemetery down there - it ruins you for other "ghost" tours because down there you can truly feel it. Worth it for a night out and getting in some exercise. We would go again with someone who had not experienced it.

We really enjoyed the experience. Good for all ages and many opportunities to sit and listen to the history. Laura was a great ghost guide. She definitely knows her history.
