First time ever on fishing excursion so we had to choose Crystal Dawn as their reputation and professionalism are the best. Not many fish were caught this early am, but we had dolphins swimming with us almost the whole cruise, great people to chat with and such a fun time. Don't know why I waited so long to go out fishing.

I’d like to say booked this charter for fishing but we actually booked it for their “Ashes at Sea”. You know how things work out as they are meant to....there was a mix up with dates but we were in OBX for a week so we just went a day later. The weather that evening was absolutely perfect. Actually better than the day we originally had planned. Awesome sunset which made it perfect for spreading my Mom and my sister’s ashes. The captain and his mate took us to a calm area and we did our celebration of life. They were very respectful and told us to take our time. We brought some champagne for a toast. We also had a few dolphins sweimming in our wake which was a fun surprise.

Booked trip for 7 people. Caught a few small fish, brought home 3 large enough to cook. Seemed to be more of a boating adventure than a fishing trip. It took an hour and a half to get back to dock and we were only fishing sound side. Kids enjoyed it though, they do have a friendly staff.

First off, I’m not giving 3 star bc of a bad day of fishing or the weather. Im giving this charter 3 star bc of hosting. Went out on 9/5/20 and all we caught was disappointment. Only positive thing about this trip was that Capt was considerate about taking us to jig before the wind got rough in the afternoon. And he was doing his best to keep us on top of the fish while jigging even with the strong wave. Really appreciate him for that. His mate is pretty chill at first but then he get too comfortable. 8 of us went and bc we only have enough gear for 5 people (which we brought our own rod, reels and lures) I ask mate to tie up 2 of his rod for my family to use so they won’t just be sitting around and doing nothing. He tied up 1 rod and fish it himself and after 2 min say nothings biting and put it all back up. No one didn’t even get a chance to fish with the boat rods and reels. We booked a 11.5 hr trip. We left at 5 and suppose to be back at 4:30. We were already back at the dock by 3:30-3:45. Overall I’m glad my buddy and I were super prepared and had a couple of extra setup for our family or else all 6 of them would of been sitting doing nothing all day. Will I go on this charter again, NO!!!!! Do your research before booking a charter. I made the mistake by booking bc I was in a rush to pick a charter that can do 8 people even when I knew that this charter had little little reviews. Never book again without many Recent reviews!!!!

Approximately 40 of us were there at 6:30 check-in time. We stood there as a young lady & guy watched from inside boat. We were not addressed or talked to. Had to call office & find out what was going on at around 6:50 and told them there was no captain. Was told he was there. The two on the boat looked lost. We were finally told captain was running late & would be there shortly. He finally showed 15 minutes after we were supposed to leave. The fishing spots we were taken too produced very few fish that could be taken home. First time I have left a half day boat without having a least a few keepers to filet.

The mates on the ship are lacking in people skills and are especiially impatient with children. They seemed more concerned about the condition of their fishing rods than making sure the paying customers were having a good experience. One of the mates brought my 9-year-old son to tears. I would not advise choosing the Crystal Dawn if you have children under 14.

We went out on the morning fishing trip, it was quite disappointing. Out of almost 50 people on the boat, only 1 person caught a small fish to take home; everyone else got these tiny fish that had to be thrown back in the water. It takes almost an hour to the channels and the captain keeps moving the boat to various spots, still no fish was bitting. We went to various spots for like 10 -15 mins each, no much action anywhere. It was disappointing. Will not do this again.

We took a group of 12 people ranging from 16 to 50 to the OBX. We went fishing on the
Crystal Dawn. After traveling for 45 minutes, one of the deckhands was giving instructions on using the fishing reels, He told everyone ' if you are planning on eating fish for dinner you will not be catching them here". We never fished in water deeper than twenty feet. Our group caught only one fish over six inches long, it was approximately ten inches long. It was the worst excuse for a fishing trip that I have ever been on.

Typical head boat experience. We went for the afternoon trip. The morning trip caught nothing. Neither did we. Captain followed standard head boat protocol. Take us the junk spot, move 4-5 times and try to get some luck at the "money spot" at the end. Not today. If you want a nice boat sightseeing trip where you get to hold a fishing rod, this is the place for you.
I cannot "dis" the captain. He needs to protect his harvest. Mate was a jerk, though. Yelled at my wife from across the boat that she had too much line out. Ummm, take a few steps and speak to her personally. She's not a fisherman and was embarrassed. She left mate a tip, but I wanted to pull it all out of his hands, toss it overboard and make him swim for his money. DON'T YELL AT MY WIFE FOR STUPID STUFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I booked a wreck/bottom fishing trip on the Country Girl for my Father in Law and myself on our recent trip to Nags Head. We were originally booked for a Friday trip but the wind was blowing pretty well so they had to postpone us, luckily only for 1 day. We left the dock and started on our way, after a long boat ride out to the gulf stream we started fishing. Within minutes we had fish in the boat. We were fishing depths of 360' and it took a few minutes to get the fish in the boat. We caught our limit on tilefish and Capt. Al moved the boat a short distance and we began catching black sea bass. The seas were a little rough but Al always did his best to arrange the boat in a manner to make the fishing easy. Between the 2 of us we caught 37# of fish. The mates were very friendly and knowledgeable.

The only thing I wish was better, which I do not think the boat has control over, was the price of getting the fish cleaned; they have a fish cleaner on the dock that charges based on weight but the price per pound for "headboats" is .30¢ higher per pound than a private charter boat @.65¢ p/p. Other that that we had a great time. I can't wait to go back and do a 6 person private charter for some big Dolphins and Tuna.
