I chartered this boat for an ash scattering at sea, and was very pleased with the good service from booking to the trip itself. The boat was very clean and comfortable, and the captain and crew were very professional, courteous and respectful.

Shame on me for not reading reviews before booking this trip for my family of four. After checking in to our resort in Kitty Hawk, I checked the advertisement magazine that the concierge gave out- I was looking for a good charter. Crystal Dawn/Country Girl was prominently advertised on a full page ad. I fell for it and booked a half day morning trip for us. Only afterwards did I read some Tripadvisor and Google reviews. I've got to say, most of them are spot on. First off, the good: booking was easy! The lady who answered the phone was enthusiastic and polite. I found the ship to be in excellent condition. It was comfortable, clean, and seemed to be well maintained. The crew was a mixed bag. I never saw the captain at all. The two mates greeted us and explained a few safety instructions and then we were off. The captain spoke over the PA system- told us it would be 50 minutes to get out to our fishing spot. When we arrived, we were excited to catch some fish. Then the continual disappointment began. We would fish for maybe 10 minutes or so before moving on. We would sail to the next spot, drop our lines, and within 5 or 10 minutes, the Captain would ask everyone to pull their lines back in so we could move again. No one was really catching anything. I managed two Croaker fish- so small that I was too embarrassed to even share them on social media. The mate collected them for cut-bait (I assume for a future trip). My wife and sons got nothing. There were 23 people aboard and I don't think we managed 10 fish (including my two) all morning. There was one good Sheepshead caught, but that was the only one. I suppose I had higher expectations that a fishing charter would produce a memorable catch. As far as the mates- one was a 16-year old girl who was very personable. She worked with everyone, and there was a young boy who followed her around all morning. She was very patient with him. The other mate looked and acted as if he would rather be back in bed. Other than handing out the poles and hosing the deck off at the end, he wasn't around much at all. Perhaps he was working the roller-grill upstairs, because they announced they had hot dogs for sale. On that note- my sons got a hot dog and snacks- they were very reasonably priced. On the ride back, we saw dolphins. Also, the mate let some of the kids throw some bait to the seagulls which was entertaining. In the end, the boat ride was enjoyable, the ship was comfortable and clean, but the fishing was very very lacking. I'd keep my expectations low if you are looking to book this charter.

I’d like to say booked this charter for fishing but we actually booked it for their “Ashes at Sea”. You know how things work out as they are meant to....there was a mix up with dates but we were in OBX for a week so we just went a day later. The weather that evening was absolutely perfect. Actually better than the day we originally had planned. Awesome sunset which made it perfect for spreading my Mom and my sister’s ashes. The captain and his mate took us to a calm area and we did our celebration of life. They were very respectful and told us to take our time. We brought some champagne for a toast. We also had a few dolphins sweimming in our wake which was a fun surprise.

First off, I’m not giving 3 star bc of a bad day of fishing or the weather. Im giving this charter 3 star bc of hosting. Went out on 9/5/20 and all we caught was disappointment. Only positive thing about this trip was that Capt was considerate about taking us to jig before the wind got rough in the afternoon. And he was doing his best to keep us on top of the fish while jigging even with the strong wave. Really appreciate him for that. His mate is pretty chill at first but then he get too comfortable. 8 of us went and bc we only have enough gear for 5 people (which we brought our own rod, reels and lures) I ask mate to tie up 2 of his rod for my family to use so they won’t just be sitting around and doing nothing. He tied up 1 rod and fish it himself and after 2 min say nothings biting and put it all back up. No one didn’t even get a chance to fish with the boat rods and reels. We booked a 11.5 hr trip. We left at 5 and suppose to be back at 4:30. We were already back at the dock by 3:30-3:45. Overall I’m glad my buddy and I were super prepared and had a couple of extra setup for our family or else all 6 of them would of been sitting doing nothing all day. Will I go on this charter again, NO!!!!! Do your research before booking a charter. I made the mistake by booking bc I was in a rush to pick a charter that can do 8 people even when I knew that this charter had little little reviews. Never book again without many Recent reviews!!!!

First time ever on fishing excursion so we had to choose Crystal Dawn as their reputation and professionalism are the best. Not many fish were caught this early am, but we had dolphins swimming with us almost the whole cruise, great people to chat with and such a fun time. Don't know why I waited so long to go out fishing.
