The Barrio Logan community is a jewel of San Diego. It is located in a predominately Mexican community that takes pride in its Chicano legacy. Located about 2 miles south of Petco Park it is very easy to access. We took the trolley from downtown and it was a quick 15 minute ride.
The area has gone through a redevelopment so there are staples from the past as well as many new businesses and cultural icons. The murals are exceptional. It is a nice place for a walking tour (but use common sense) and Logan Blvd. has many great businesses

Barrio Logan is filled with culture. Art, brew pubs, burgers taquerias and barrieria.
Make sure to stop at Hayes for a tasty burger, mishmash for a hipster experience and Birrieria 664 for your soul.

We traveled through the barrio and walked along parts of East Village that borders the barrio. The murals are pretty spectacular, maybe a bit edgy, but they represent Hispanic community interests. Not sure I would make a special trip here to the barrio as San Diego has so much else to see and do.
Barrio Logan is primarily an industrial location; it is also home to Chicano Park where most of the murals are located.

Barrio Logan is undergoing a quiet resurgence, so I suggest you visit before the chains come in and turn Logan Avenue into another suburban strip mall. You might stop at Salud for real Mexican food or Ryan Brothers Coffee for a mid-afternoon espresso drink--or for something stronger, Border X Brewing. A few art galleries are interspersed between the mom and pop businesses, and the whole neighborhood exudes its unique low-key welcome.

I recently went back to the barrio to see what all the buzz was about. What a transformation from what it use to be. Indeed there are still neglected (very) areas that look the same as they did 20 years ago, but the renaissance on Logan Avenue definitely makes up for it. Amazing places to eat, drink and shop.
I would recommend the following for any visitor:
1. Chicano Park (during the day)
2. Logan Ave (Por Vida, Salud, Barrio Dog, Boarder X, El Carrito, Ciccia Osteria, Grind House)
3. Cafe Moto (hip coffee shop with massive roasting facility at back full of cool vintage stuff)
4. Cuatro Milpas ( the line out the door speaks for itself)
5, Mishmash (delicious comfort food with vegan options)
6. El Mercado ( Pho, Ironfist, Dough Nation, Maggies Cafe, Oi Asian fusion, El Pulpo).

A complete waste of time. You can see graffiti painted bridges in every city you visit. These are nothing special and the added aroma of urine doesn’t add to the experience

If nothing else go see the amazing murals under the I5 bridge. Not sure about wondering the streets due to safety. The art work around the I5 bridge is incredible and worth every minute you spend.

Barrio Logan is fascinating for the one who likes visually intriguing sites. The architecture and artwork is beautiful.
Strolling in the area is pleasant but my husband and I stayed on Logan and Cesar Chavez. We did not wander in the streets as we were unsure of safety issues. The colors and designs are striking.

The murals are terrific! Recently re-painted so they are fresh. An undiscovered little gem for any art lover. It's perfectly safe in the daytime, not recommended for evenings/nights. Patti's Fruitland is just a couple blocks away, order their fruit salad.

A humble place with a Big Chicano heart beat. So colourful and arty a must see in San Diego. Eat tacos at Salud or taste a Barrio dog there’s also a brewery and get an ice cream from the sweet paleta man pushing his cart through the park. The skatepark is under the bridge too. There are quite a few homeless around the park, but no more than anywhere else I’d seen. If you love old cars you’ll love the low riders cruising around or parking in Logan street.

How do you get to the water from Barrio Logan on foot? Where is the nearest waterway for taking a nice walk/stroll along the water/pier/beach/dock/anything? (Not including the navy base where we have no access.)
