I recently visited West Coast Multihulls for 2 clinics: Anchoring and Mooring on day 1and Catamaran Docking on day 2. Absolutely the best sailing instruction I have seen anywhere! Captain Lance and Captain Murphy were outstanding...great instruction, lots of patience and made it fun! I would recommend these sailing courses for anybody looking to improve their sailing skillset. I will come back next year for the same...a great way to get ready for a sailing trip!

I had done 2 prior charters of multi-hulls and still did not feel confident in handling and Especially docking the multi-hulls. Also, I felt although I had been sailing monohulls for almost 20 years, there was something missing in how I was sailing the catamarran. I just got back from another charter in St Vincent and the Grenadines and the training that I received from West Coast Multi-Hulls made me feel much more confident and made the Charter that much more enjoyable!

We spent a day practicing docking a large catamaran with an instructor from West Coast Multihulls. This was incredibly useful to us in preparation for a catamaran bareboat charter we will be doing later this year in Italy. Our instructor was incredibly experienced, very helpful and informative, and he made the class fun for our entire group. I would highly recommend West Coast Multihulls for their training programs and charter opportunitites!

Perfect! Thank you for sharing your experience and we hope to have you back for more refreshers before your next bareboat charter!

Myself and two friends completed the 7 day course 101/103/104/114 June 2021 aboard Flower Power.
We all had a great time and enjoyed the experience. I myself feel very confident in handling a 40' Cat, Captains Ed & Anthony did a great job. The boat was in excellent condition with all the comforts of home. We enjoyed great meals at local restaurants. We seen hundreds of dolphins and one whale.

My suggestions to West Coast Multihulls would be to give people the option on making the 22 hour round trip, motoring to Catalina and back. I know it gives you a taste of passage making and seeing Catalina was fun but if I had it to do over again I would have preferred to bounce up and down the coast. I think there would have been more time to practice other skills and would have been more enjoyable.

Advice to people taking the class:
Wear lots of sunscreen the first 2 days. The keel boats have no shade even if its overcast the sun is powerful. Also don't drink a pot of coffee before hand as there is no head on board and you are out for 4-5 hours.
If you are not using a car place your grocery order for delivery EARLY. By the time you are able to get your stuff on the boat and get orientated it will be after 6 o'clock. It would have been much easier to have Door Dash bring the groceries to the marina while sipping a frosty beverage than be marching around the store. You don't need to buy a ton of food. we only cooked dinner on the boat one night. the rest of the time we took advantage of the great restaurants in Mission bay and Avalon.
If you are flying one can walk to the marina from the airport. We took an Uber from
the airport and the dude charged us 50 bucks to literally go across the street to the Sheraton Hotel. We walked back 15 minutes.

Overall a great experience, See you on the water!

It's rare that the experience you hope for, the little fantasy you have playing in your head prior to an event, is actually surpassed by the event itself. That is what West Coast Multihulls delivered for me. From the warm greeting by Guinevere, to the experience and laid-back, yet professional attitudes and instruction of both Captain Eddie, and Captain Lance, I could not have asked for more. I took ASA courses 101, 103, 104, and 114 over the course of 7 days and although it is a large amount of information and hands-on instruction to get through in one week, they did and tremendous job. Both the couple I took the class with and I tried to find some sort of constructive criticism to give to Guinevere at the end of the course and the only thing we could come up with was: More Wind! :) Seriously, I can not recommend West Coast Multihulls enough, the people are genuine and caring, the instruction is first class, and the experience is beyond amazing. Stop reading this and go make a reservation!

We bareboat chartered one of their beautiful catamaran's for a 7 day sail on the Sea of Cortez with friends. The boat was fantastic, very comfortable, well equipped and maintained. The entire staff went above and beyond to provide us as much information as needed making our trip from start to finish just a wonderful experience. Not having sailed this part of the Sea of Cortez I was excited to see what all the talk was about. It did not disappoint in the least. We found some great out of the way anchorages that we had to our selves the majority of the time. I'd highly recommend this group and location for a 5 or 7 day excursion getaway sail, Bareboat or Crewed.

The seas were calling be back over the past few years and I finally put a little effort in and found a great school that is affiliated with the ASA. West Coast Multihulls, our of San Diego, CA provided everything necessary to obtain experience and the training I was looking for. Fortunately, there was an opening for the class I wanted/needed to take and I immediately jumped in with 2 feet! With sailing numerous times throughout the past 40 years, I decided to go with the basic course (101), as a refresher and then take three advance courses while onboard a 40 ft. Catamaran. The instructors were fantastic as was the 5 days at sea. I highly recommend West Coast Multihulls for the beginners through the experienced.

Took this class to get certs from ASA. I learned to sail and was certified through USN in 1882. This course has potential to be very good as the 36 ft Cat and the captain/instructor were fine. However the 2 days going to Catalina and back were a waste of time. 10 hours of motoring on autopilot both ways did nothing for learning to sail a cat. That time also took away from other skills time like docking. I would not recommend taking this course. It would be better to spend 5 days on the boat in San Diego where you can sail and have time to practice all of the skills adequately. I only got to dock twice in 5 days. I should not have to privately rent a cat and instructor to get time to work on docking skills which are extremely important.

My husband and I did the ASA 105/106 Navigation and Advanced sailing courses last month (June 26-29). We’ve been working with instructors and captains for the past year to become more comfortable sailing our own catamaran. However, our experience on this four day course with our instructor Captain Ryan was by far one of the best experiences we’ve had. Ryan excelled at teaching us new sailing skills and refining/correcting existing behavior. He shared his knowledge in a positive environment and made me feel very comfortable asking questions and practicing new found skills. The boat we were on was modern, clean, and well equipped/stocked with everything we needed for the four days. I highly recommend West Coast Catamarans as a sailing school, and Captain Ryan!

Excellent class - challenging but fun. Instructor was very knowledgeable and patient, providing input at key points in the sailing and docking evolutions, but also giving us space to figure things out and learn.
Both wind and boat traffic were up in San Diego Bay giving us plenty of opportunity to develop and test our skills.
