Best Hiking inside the City
Jul 2018 • Family
Mission Trails / Cows mountain are the best places to go Hiking inside the City. The best part is dogs with leash are welcomed on the mountain. Woo Hoo or Bow Wow!

Nice place to walk and get away

Stunning flora around the place (if you like desert terrain), very quiet and peaceful. I wouldn't go here on a hot day but otherwise it is a nice retreat from the city

Nice short hike
Mar 2017 • Family
We got to Mission Trails visitor center a bit late as they close at 5pm so we just took the short visitor center trail for 1.5 miles. It is very nice and goes by the San Diego river. there is a spot that you can wade across. I quite enjoyed it as a short hike.

We were a group of 54 hikers from Arizona who came to San Diego for 4 days hiking. We were suppose to spend the day hiking at Mission Trails, but due to the tremendous rains the trails were closed. We had organized before hand a talk from one of the rangers at the visitor center. He was so informative and humorous that we thoroughly enjoyed our hour talk. He felt sorry for us that we were missing out being on the trails that he showed us a movie of the area. Not quite the same but gave us a glimpse of what could be. We will have to come back on a drier day. We thank the staff for being so accommodating.

I loved it. Great place to take yourself and your dogs for a morning hike! Many different trails for you to go hike on...lot of uphill.

Great hike for anyone!
Oct 2014 • Friends
This is a great hike for anyone with or without hiking experience. It's just about the right length and even my small dog can endure this hike! Be careful on warm days, it's better to go in the earlier hours to avoid extreme heat as this part of San Diego county gets pretty warm during the summer months.

Mission Trails - Cowles Mountain
Mar 2015 • Solo
This is a great park to hike after work as it is close to Mission Valley, La Mesa, Santee, and eastern San Diego. There are several hikes you can do in the park. The most popular hike has to the hike up Cowles Mountain (1592 feet, highest point in the city of San Diego).
You can hike up the front side from either Golfcrest or Barker Way in San Diego or hike the backside from Mesa Road in Santee. Unfortunately the 1 and 1/2 mile trail from Golfcrest to the summit can get very crowded, especially on weekends. The hike from Barker Way is not as crowded and the 2 and 1/2 mile hike from Santee is the least crowded. From the summit there is a 1 mile trail to Pyles Peak, on the weekdays you may not see a sole on this trail, even on the weekends you won't see many people.
There are rattlesnakes in the park, so stay on the trail and keep your dog(s) on a leash.

Good for novice, but better options exist.

These trails are great for beginner hikers and those just trying to know their area, but if your looking for real challenges, there are other areas that tend to bloom with nature during the right seasons. Ask around, great way to find good hikes would be thru the locals, and they will direct you to something cool if they are keep to the activity!
