About
Running parallel to Mission Beach, this 2.3-mile boardwalk is a young and bustling area, lined with cool shops, bars, and restaurants. You can do the scenic oceanfront walk towards Pacific Beach, as cyclists and skaters whizz past you. It's also where you can find the historic Belmont Park, where you can ride both old-school and modern amusement rides, climb a rock wall, play laser tag, and more.
Parking can be tricky; travelers recommend taking public transport here. Otherwise, a bike tour is a great option to cover the area's best highlights, which includes both the boardwalk and Mission Bay Park.

Went for a stroll with friends and it was like playing Frogger on the boardwalk.. bicyclists and scooter riders don't believe in sharing the boardwalk. Seawalls are well worn and need serious repairs. Considering all the signs about no dogs, well I don't think people can read. Dogs everywhere and not all of them were on leashes. Totally not cool, especially for people with allergies or people who are afraid of dogs.. odd part is, if you look across the water theres a beach section for DOGS only. Take your dogs overthere. Watch where you step too. Yes dog poop on the walkway.

I think the boardwalk experience would be a lot better with better weather. We did not luck out on our timing coming here, it has been cold, rainy, windy, with thunderstorms for most of our trip, and so the boardwalk has been flooded a lot and hard to walk on. I think it would be much lovlier with nicer weather, we would be able to enjoy it more then.

We rented scooters and bikes and did this end to end. VIsited again later. Lots of activity and lively during the day. It was pretty dead and a lot of places closed early, so evening was pretty dull. This could be because we were there off season.

Tourist trap most days, cool vibe that is pretty laid back. Tons of shops where you can get a towel or hoodie.
Free parking. You can rent bikes, scooters, or skates, Belmont park for a fun ride, and tons of pizza places and bars. This is where teenage memories are made of summers.
The sand is clean, and there are a few fire pits that can be used. There is a restroom, and showers just on the boardwalk. The restrooms are typical of a busy boardwalk, but there was always toilet paper. Homeless hang around there so dont leave anything unattended, including children.
You can see passing ships and plenty of helicopters going north/south to base. Lots of people walking their dogs, and playing football. Can be expensive to stay, so book early!

We stayed right on this walkway. It’s a great place to people watch, or to catch the sunset. There are restaurants and shops at either end. Just watch out for the bikes, scooters, etc. It can get a little crowded at times.

By bike or foot, a great place to visit. Weekends can be nutty but park down by the jetty and begin there. Bayside is always a treat and much quieter. Skip the Belmont Park. Touristy and nothing to see. You only need the scenery.

I visited this location on the off-season, so it was not super busy and there were not a whole lot of locals around. I imagine the bustle of this place during peak would make it a lot more exciting, but in the off season, it's just a nice place to go chill. The beach walk is nice and peaceful, and there are shops, eats, and bars in walking distance.
Pros:
- Free Parking
- Lots of open space
- Great beach, surfer and wildlife viewing
- Walking distance to Cannonball, fantastic rooftop bar/restaurant
- Shops and the boardwalk are fun to check out
- Felt safe

Great boardwalk flanked by million-dollar homes on one side and the Pacific Ocean on the other. Very "happenin'" on weekends, especially when it's warm. Lots of eateries along the way. I recommend World Famous and the Crab Shack.

I was excited to visit the boardwalk, having such great memories of boardwalks from my childhood. But this one seemed geared toward 20-somethings and no one else. Not much to do but eat or sit at the bar and shop for cheap souvenirs.

I would say, yes. It's the more "family oriented beach in SD. Surf section near Belmont park I reckon.

Could anyone tell me how easy it is to use the San Diego public transportation system from the Balboa Park area to get to Mission Beach Boardwalk area? I see subway trains with caution warnings about detours and switches to different bus lines -- all things that this "country girl" has never had to contend with. Thanks!

I'm not sure. I was going to go on public transit from Mission Bay to La Jolla but tried Uber for the first time so my trip out there was free and to get back it was $9. I'd get on the public transit page and look for routes. I actually called transit to get the information. They were very helpful.

I'm not sure as I was there at lunch. I did walk the area around 8 pm and felt most places were closed.
