While at Balboa Park, see the free butterfly garden. Located near the Science Museum. It is a nice walk.

We wandered around Balboa Park for two days enjoying the well known sites (San Diego Museum of Art) but also experiencing little gems like the Alcazar Garden, which is patterned after gardens in Spain. It is located near the Mingei Museum and is close to the SD Museum of Art. We were here in January so we definitely did not see the gardens in the best season. However, the basic structure of colorful Moorish tiles and pergodas were there to enjoy, along with some plants still in season including boxwoods and dusty miller (?). This is a little diversion we bumped into that was actually pleasing to see and in the off season can be viewed in less than 15 minutes.

Alcazar Garden is a small garden where you mainly walk the perimeter surrounding the plants. Parking in summertime at Balboa Park is a veritable NIGHTMARE and really not worth the effort for this little garden.

Very pretty garden with lots of flowers and hedges. Nice fountain with tile mosaics. If you're at Balboa Park, try to find it.

This is a lovely and tranquil garden, located at the end of Balboa park.
There are beautiful flowers, arranged in perfect geometric shapes.

The Alcazar Garden with snapdragons, manicured shrubs and fountains is nestled between beautiful buildings in Balboa Park. It is a nice area to sit and reflect or rest while visiting the park.

When walking around the park, this garden pops out and you have to stop and enjoy. It is small compared to the rest of the park, but a welcome retreat. Lots varied plants which some are in bloom. It's a surprising garden which one will admire.
