I’ve dove with Marissa Charters since 2017/2018. Lora and chris are hands down the best. The intimate number of divers allows everyone to have a genuinely relaxed and fun dive. No one is pressuring you to do anything that you dont want to do. Not to mention, the cutest beagles, Captain and Scout, are onboard ready to greet you. I have always raved about Marissa Charters, and seeing how Lora operates her boat during the pandemic is only making me love her more and more. When I was walking to the dock, my heart melted!!! Lora prepared each diver a wet and dry bin and packed each diver a goody bag (snacks, facial masks, defog, tissues, water, and more!). Inside out wet bin is a small fresh water bucket (vs the classic large fresh water dunk bucket). There are nets above us to hang our facial masks in between dives. So thoughtful!!! If you’re visiting from out of town and are having a difficult time selecting a charter, look no further!! Go with Marissa Charters!!

My review is 100% about the boat and crew, as I didn’t end up diving. For the first time ever, I had a panic attack on my first dive and made the choice to sit out the rest of the dives, as my body just didn’t feel right. I didn’t have enough weight and couldn’t drop down. Chris did a great job of trying to talk me through best techniques to sink but once things weren’t working I found I couldn’t breath. He talked me through calming myself well and was even going to jump in the water with me (but I would have been even more mortified). He got me back on the boat while I was still having trouble breathing. Never experienced anything like it, but Chris and Laura were calm and supportive. I opted to sit out next two dives, so I got a lot of boat time. The best is that there is a dog on board, Captain, and I swear he’s a therapy dog without knowing it. Lots of cuddle time was just what was needed to not only make me feel better, but an enjoyable way to pass the time. Plus he spots whales and dolphins better than anyone I’ve ever seen, it’s pretty awesome. They should have him work on a whale watching boat during the week to bring in extra cash! Food was the best onboard spread I’ve had on a boat, they go all the way in making divers as comfortable as possible. It’s not a big boat and for sure can get cramped. Many of the other divers had clearly dove with Marissa Charters before and were a normal, good group of people. The other divers seemed to enjoy the dives (Yukon and Ruby), a few saying they preferred Ruby because it was more compact. A beautiful day out on the water with good people. Side note: please tip exceptional crews differently than your “standard”. We’ve all experienced crews and service that is bad, standard, and exceptional. A great way to keep exceptional crews going strong is to treat them differently by tipping a little more than you would otherwise. Especially if it’s a 3 tank trip (vs. 2 tanks).

Great boat that is comfortable, clean and safe! Crew is very knowledgeable and knows all the best spots to dive. I did want to take "Captain" home with me.

I've been trying to get back in the water, but I wanted to go on a trip that does not do the Yukon and yesterday was the day. This was a 3 tank to some local structure/reef sites. As usual, the boat opened for boarding a few minutes ahead of the scheduled time. The crew was able to get all the divers (including some serious tech gear and a rebreather or two) squared away for an on-time departure. Even with the multiple double tank rigs, and several large cameras, everything had a place and once the big bags were on the roof, there was plenty of room. One of the things that brings me back is the friendly crew. They always have time to answer questions about the sites, or to help sort out last minute gear things. The hot chili between the 2nd and 3rd dive was appreciated, as well as the hot tea that's always available. The water was warmer than it has been for months (up to 64F at depth on one dive!), but still chilly, especially for those not used to SoCal diving. I'll be booking with Marissa again, as soon as work schedules permit. This was a weekend dive, but I really like the weekday dives as they are usually less busy.
