Dirty Mission Beach
San Diego, CA1 contribution
Dirty, noisy and rife with hooliganism-unless you go between 5 AM and 10 AM...
Oct 2021
This beachfront has changed dramatically since I first began coming here in 1998.
You must approach this beach with some key assumptions. Keep in mind that this is one of the most heavily used beaches in San Diego County. Therefore, the shear volume of humanity weighs heavily on the environment in form of lots of cigarette butts, emesis, spilled food and the like. The best time I have discovered is between 5 AM and about 10 AM. Otherwise, it is rife with impaired individuals, hooliganism, and a dangerous gauntlet of bicycles, scooters, runners and strollers.

Mission Beach Enjoyment
Jul 2021 • Couples
Great overall Beach. Very Busy Boardwalk with plenty of vendors to purchase great niche items. My wife and I visited the beach on a Saturday. This day was very busy with it being summer vacation time . If you want to find parking near the beach, I would recommend getting there early. Parking near the beach and in the park across the road from the beach fills up pretty quickly. If you are not familiar with the beach in San Diego, the water is very cold. I am from Texas and was used to the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico. There are plenty of areas to find a space to sit on the water front. Signs are posted explaining designated seating areas based on the areas for emergency vehicles to travel. This beach has a boardwalk themed amusement park attached to it. The shops along the beach has plenty of food choices to eat and shops to purchase souvenirs. I would rate this beach a great place for any type of visitor. I saw small children, teenagers and young couples enjoy their day at the beach. San Diego has some of the best weather, although I would recommend some sort of covering while sitting in the sun. Overall, I would definitely visit this beach again on my next visit to San Diego.

Great place to people watch, enjoy all the beach has to offer or just sit back and relax! Guarded beaches, plenty of food options, and great souvenir shops to pick up anything you forgot to bring.

Disappointed
Jun 2021 • Couples
Disappointed. As a 40 year local resident who bikes the beach area I am disgusted how dirty & trashy Mission Bay beach parking lots, restrooms, & boardwalk have become. What the heck do the city employees do? First, as I stepped out of vehicle just missed stepping on a used condom, yuck. Men's restrooms were a bacterial breeding ground as was several areas of boardwalk. I understand much of this results from local resident who care less and just trash things, but again, what are our city parks staff doing to resolve.

Covid Crazy Crowded
Jun 2021 • Family
Big mistake going on a Sunny Saturday as SD county is opening up. Parking and traffic was really bad, but found a spot after 30 mins near Belmont park. Super crowded, can't imagine staying at a resort or b&b here and getting in and out using the bridges. My son still has a good time but was hard on everyone else. If staying here, best not to try and get out to anywhere else in SD.

Great beach

Was great to sit on the beach. It was busy and took a while to find parking but it was worth it. There are lots of restaurants around and a roller coaster.

Fun in the sun!

We traveled to the west coast for the first time and took advantage of the beaches, twice! Mission Beach has great sand and surf, and a Belmont shopping/amusement park. Loved it!

Nice beach
Mar 2021 • Family
Nice CA beach. Not as good as Caribbean or FL. Ocean is cold so keep that in mind. Typical beach town good shops and some food. Spot to pick up some sun. You may see some homeless people around. Nothing considering that happened. Can get crowded.

If you want to go to Mission Beach.
Feb 2020 • Solo
My favorite part of Mission Beach is the nostalgia of it. I grew up there in the sixties. I remember going to Belmont Park when mom and I had the time. Get some sort of a floating device. It really doesn't matter if it is a surf board, a boogie board or a raft. The idea is to experience the ocean. If you are not much of a swimmer, go over to Mission Bay. You can still go bottoms up. But you are more likely to be seen by someone and saved if you do. I didn't grow up with a taco shop on every corner. But they are there now. Be sure you have a burrito or some street tacos. Another thing I grew up with was a skateboard. I used to skate in a pack up and down the boardwalk. Even doing your laundry in this neighborhood seems special. If you are traveling with an older person, I suggest taking the Old Town Trolley. It goes to Mission Beach, Old Town and La Jolla as well as a veteran's memorial. You can hop off at any locale or just ride around. Local buses go down Mission Blvd. But the parking is the worst.
