The area
Neighborhood: Charlestown
Charlestown’s hilly roads, narrow streets and gaslight lamps, make it an enticing neighborhood to visit. Follow the Freedom Trail over the Washington St bridge from the North End or take the scenic water locks to Paul Revere Park. Walk through City Square and stroll down cute Main street, wandering up the windy residential streets to Monument Square, where you can learn about the city’s history along with a great view of Boston at the Bunker Hill Monument. While it’s not a huge area, there are some excellent restaurants. Find your way to the Charlestown Navy Yard, which is a developing area with lots of condos and an additional site for Massachusetts General Hospital research centers. Here you will also find the USS Constitution Museum. After you’re done, hop on an MBTA ferry at the dock on Baxter street and zip on over to Long Wharf and the New England Aquarium.

We always enjoy visiting WWII vessels, this one is limited to just the main deck, which was disappointing compared to other museums. You are greeted on board by a Ranger and you can check out the galley, look inside a turret, visit the Combat information Center and make your way to the fantail.
There are some nice signs to tell you about the ship, but there is so much history here that you can miss. USS Cassin Young was struck by two Kamakazi planes, one a wooden biplane, but there is nothing on the ship marking this or telling the story. Many of her sailors were killed and the sacrifice of those who served to protect other sailors and Marines is lost.
All the weapon systems are in excellent condition, our son (history buff) enjoyed getting to touch the 20 mm and the teardrop depth charges on the fan tail. No access to the upper deck or bridge which rounds out the tour of most ships. We did not see an opportunity for a below deck tour to the engine room of damage control stations which are guide led and give you the insight in what it took to live, fight and travel aboard a small ship in a vast Pacific ocean.
Seems like there is more to help current generations understand the sacrifice made by previous generations.

The ship is free to visit so the price is right. I enjoyed walking onto a WW-II ship to get a feel for it was like. The self-guided tour takes one around the main deck only. Being retired Navy, I would have like to go below decks. It’s worth a short visit while visiting the USS Constitution.

The US destroyer Cassin built in 1943 was a great site to see all the guns and artillery onboard. We parked 10 minutes away and no entrance fee was great. The ship has history for the Pearl Harbor war with Japan

The USS Cassin Young is a Fletcher Class Destroyer from the Second World War. It is located in the Charlestown Navy Yard not that far from the USS Constitution. It is a self-guided tour but very interesting to walk up on deck and wander around to see what living and serving on this "tin can" was like.

We visited this ship after the US Constitution. It was even more interesting than the other ship and gave a good view on how life on board was.
They organized a small guided freetour, just when we were there, so we participated. The guide was maybe a bit to full about military history, but the explanation was good and the tour was free, so we did not care.

Seems to be an afterthought in the Constitution and museum complex. Descriptive signs onboard are minimal and many areas of the ship are off limits. Very little help from docents/personnel onboard. Maybe 30 minutes if you dawdle. Spend the time viewing the historic Constitution and museum, then this only if you have extra time.

Came here with the family after visiting the Constitution. It is a nice little walk around but due to COVID restrictions you are only allowed to walk the main deck. There are doors open to see inside the guns and some of the spaces on the main deck but you aren’t able to see a whole lot. The ship is very well taken care of and would be an even more enjoyable tour when you are able to see more of this Tin Can.

The first time we tried to visit, it was closed due to heat. The second time, it was open. It was worth returning. Due to COVID, we could only visit the top deck.
If coming from the Aquarium area, the ferry is a nice alternative to a bus or train.

Excellent exploration of a warship that fought in late WWII, especially the Battle of Okinawa. She's one of only 4 surviving Fletcher class destroyers still around. She's amazing to experience and take in her history.

It was easily accessible, roomy enough to walk around, and really neat to see... Look up and tee the turrets and the size of them! They have most of the ship open for viewing...including torpedo room, radio room..sick bay and mess hall/kitchen area. Tours are wondefrul as they explain the crew, destinations, and history

No, it is closed from November through May, but it can open for some holidays. This is as of 2019 and based on the website hours.
