A quick visit
Mar 2019
Have been once to see an exhibit I had read about. The nice part is that it is a small museum so one can see it all in one visit. The downside is, don't make a special trip, too small for a day's experience but if you are visiting Boston College, it is right there.

excellent fall semester exhibit

"Carrie Mae Weems: Strategies of Engagement" is the current exhibit and it is a moving tribute to African Americans and their struggle. Mixed media: from hanging fabric, sculpture, historical photos to creatively woven videos and much more. Highly recommended.

The museum is at Boston College and is free.

If you like fine art then this, permanent collection promises to be something worth the journey. The question is how far? If you had a spare afternoon and wanted to take the T up from the centre of Boston as far as it goes on the green line to Boston College, then maybe you won’t be too disappointed if you find you can’t see ANY of it, because NONE of it is on permanent display! In fact it is in permanent storage!
If, like me, you are a tourist and flown across the Atlantic Ocean to see it, (or any distance beyond a few miles) then you will rightly feel truly pissed!
My warning to any other potential travellers is to ring and speak to the museum director before stetting foot out of your front door.

Disappointed
Sep 2018
Be warned: if you are expecting to see the McMullen Museum's permanent collections from Europe, Asia, and the Americas. Gothic and Baroque tapestries, Italian paintings of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, and American paintings of the nineteenth .....then
.... YOU WONT GET TO SEE ANY OF IT!

We made the journey from Boston today to see the fine collection of art that we saw on the website. We made an hour journey only to find on arrival that it is not on display or permanent. We were so disappointed, why show something that is never available for the general public. We suggested to them that perhaps a simple banner in their website stating ‘not on display’ might be considered to save people valuable visiting time and disappointment.

Located at commonwealth avenue and Having extensive collection of art from Asia ,Europe(16th and 17th century) and America (19th and 20th), and despite the University Museum of Boston College in Brighton, it has a good recognition in the world of art.

If you are an art lover, BC's museum is worth a visit. Check what the exhibits are and the schedules. Generally well curated.

Great for students!

Free for Boston College students (and I’m pretty sure for other students, as well). Great exhibits, and usually has some sort of crafts, music, and/or food to accompany the art!

LOVE THIS SMALL MUSEUM AT BOSTON COLLEGE! Each semester, they have a new exhibit. On Sundays, they have a 2 p.m. free docent tour! Have been there several times and have always enjoyed our visits. The art exhibits vary. The view of Boston and Brighton is great.

Not great vis a vie accessibility
Nov 2017 • Couples
We took our family to this museum to see a special exhibit. The handicapped parking was far from the door and up several little hills. We needed two wheelchairs for our group but like many places, they purchased child-Sized wheelchairs so one of us went home. The people were nice but, I can’t remember not being able to get into a museum before. Shame!
The family found the show boring and came home much sooner than expected.

A jewel of a museum in Chestnut Hill

My husband and I loved both the building and the first exhibit, Beyond Words: Illuminated Manuscripts in Boston Collections; Manuscripts for Pleasure & Piety (September 12–December 11, 2016). The collection was superbly curated and the items on display were exquisite. The small scale of the museum makes it an intimate setting with the exhibits highly accessible. Wonderful location, easy parking.
