This is a Freedom Trail mini sight directly across from the Massachusetts State House with the gold dome. If you have seen the movie "Glory", this is a memorial to the men, African American, and their command officer Robert Gould Shaw who were killed in the Civil War. The regiment is one of the earliest African American Regiments of the Civil War and most decorated units fighting in several battles. Again, it is an interesting side visit especially if you have seen the movie.

Such an honor to see this Memorial once again! Having just been renovated, it is looking clean and shiny! Just standing in front of it, remembering Col. Robert Gould Shaw and the 54th Massachusetts regiment of African American solders and their heroic actions to take Fort Wagner, we were moved to see this beautiful Augustus Saint-Gaudens bronze memorial.

Whether you are a fan of the movie Glory, a Civil War buff, into African-American history, or exploring the Freedom Trail; do not miss this monument. It's along the edge of the Commons across from the state house. Look at both the front and back sides of the monument. The trolley tours stop here as well; and the T is two blocks away.

Robert Gould Shaw was an American soldier in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Born into a prominent abolitionist family, he accepted command of the first all-black regiment in the Northeast and encouraged the men to refuse their pay until it was equal to the white troops' wage. The Memorial to Robert Gould Shaw is a bronze relief sculpture depicting Col. Shaw and the 54th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, marching down Beacon Street on May 28, 1863. It was unveiled May 31, 1897.

Robert Gould shaw and the 54th regiment memorial is a fabulous memorial set opposite the State House at the top of Boston Common. Very disappointed I could not see it properly as people were using the base as a sitting area

This is the second stop on the Freedom Trail. This is the monument to the 54th Massachusetts which fought at Fort Wagner and was in the movie Glory.
