Living just 30 miles north of Boston for 22 years and working in the city for 2, you’d think I’d visited most of the historic sites. However on a recent trip back I discovered an historic gem. Castle Island Fort Independence was selected as a sea defense in 1634 and the first fort built in 1644. Over the years a number of renovations and rebuilding took place until the 8th was built in 1851 by Col. Sylvanus Thayer, the “Father of West Point.”

The fort is normally open with free tours Weekends during Jun, July and August however the park around the fort is a welcome walking area for hundreds of people daily.

Castle Island is still the best 2 mile walk one can take in the city. Mask wearing is almost zero, except at Sullivan's, but the crowds are well spaced over all the walking paths. Looked a bit tighter at the playground, but we kept our distance from there

Lots to do here. This is where the locals come to hang out and unwind.

There is ample parking, but you may have to look around a bit. There is lots of parking all the way around Pleasure Bay on Day Blvd. There is no charge for any parking.

For the history-minded, Fort Independence is there, but apparently is not open for public entry.

Lots of folks out for fitness, with a full loop around Pleasure Bay. The weather was good while we were there, and there were swimmers in Pleasure Bay. There are two bridges to Boston Harbor from the bay, and it's something to watch the tide come in/go out.

There's a single kids' playground. There are benches throughout, but not quite enough of them.

There is fishing at all points, and a dedicated fishing pier on the harbor side of the fort.

The Conley Terminal port is right smack next door, and you may get to see a huge cargo ship come or go. Logan Airport is right across the harbor, and you can watch the planes come/go.

And there's Sullivan's, a local mainstay, providing all manner of drinks and foods at a reasonable price. There are a few tables nearby to sit down at.

Great place to visit.

Lol. This place is a joke. The park itself is great. Nice grounds and beach when the weather is nice.

My problem is the Fort (or rather the folks that run the place). It’s supposed to be open for tours between Memorial Day and Labor Day, from 12pm-3pm, on Saturday and Sunday.

I have now visited Boston 3 times and attempted to see the inside. Each time it has been closed. No signage, no website update, not a single piece of useful information that could help someone discern when to actually come. You have no way to know if it will be open or closed before arriving.

Nice place for a walk along the beach and around the fort. The fort was closed when we were there, but the grounds were beautiful with the green grass and spring blossoms still on all the trees. Quite a few families were having a picnic. You can purchase fast food at Sullivan's Castle Restaurant, which is pretty good. Be sure to be prepared for a change in the weather. When we first started walking, the weather was rather pleasant, but after about 45 minutes, the wind picked up to the point that we just needed to leave. I'd like to go back and walk the entire path.

Great day for a walk today. Had skipped C.I. the past few months due to an extreme lack of mask-wearers. Got there around noon today and would say 75-80% of visitors were masked, which was better. Tons of parking and the paths have been well maintained. Even grabbed lunch at Sully's!

A long time Boston area resident FINALLY made it to see Castle Island on a beautiful last day of fall. Walked around the castle which was closed. Beautiful views. Well maintained. 96% of people following Covid rules and wearing masks. Lots of families. Couples having picnics with wine!

The day I visited was super windy. It was a great place for a walk, and looked like a perfect day for kiteboarding. Many people & families out enjoying a mild fall day. Parking was easy & restrooms were open!

My wife and kid liked it. A nice place. I'll try to go back. The fort wasn't open at all. I don't think it's open until Memorial Day. The line was crazy long to get food at the Castle Island thing. There was ok tree cover for when it rained.

Visited here on a Sunday afternoon.

Great views and lots of history. Great place to walk, bike and relax.

Unfortunately you can’t go inside the fortress unless your part of a tour.
