About
St.Claire Art is the gallery and working studio of Asheville artist Stephen St.Claire. His paintings are unique in that he begins each one by sculpting the composition onto the canvas with layers of modeling compound and gesso, then covering the entire surface with Italian aluminum leaf. Oil paint is then applied to the metal, and then each piece is finished with several layers of solar-protectant resin. "I have called my technique Dialuminism ("light passing through") because light reflects off the metal background layer, passes through the layers of paint and then is refracted by the layers of resin (which acts as a clear lens, fused to the surface of the painting). The result is a painting that is basically back-lit, which creates very intense color. Light plays off some areas and casts shadows beneath others, creating a dimensional painting that changes in appearance depending upon where the viewer is standing in relation to the light source." Visitors are always welcome not only to view the artwork, but to pull up a chair and chat with the artist.

I have been to this gallery several times and have made several purchases, but I really want to make a big purchase and can't decide which one I want because all of his art is magnificent. I don't use that word lightly. His technique is so exquisite that it will actually transport you to the landscape that he painted. I was fortunate enough to work in a fine art museum for 5 years, so I feel as though I am qualified to recognize true talent. The next time you are in Asheville, visit St. Claire Art, you won't regret it.

A highlight of our trip to Asheville was a stop at Stephen’s gallery. Not only is his artwork fantastic but he could not have been more welcoming. I have visited and seen many works of art and it is hard to describe how his art jumps out at you and draws you in. He took the time to explain and show you the process. I purchased a small piece that day. I wanted to get a piece done of a hike I did with my daughter in Colorado. I sent Stephen the photo and what he created is so special. Everyone who comes to visit wants to know where I got this beautiful piece. Do yourself a favor and stop by Stephen’s gallery and more importantly meet the man behind the magic

Thank you so much for that! Hey, the chance to create that Colorado piece for you was an awesome gift to me. I love the Rockies and had such fun painting that for you.

We stepped off the Trolley Bus and came across this studio. We watched Stephen at work and he took time to explain his technique. Not only that he also spent time explaining the subjects of his other work hanging on display.
The quality of his work is astounding and a welcome departure away from traditional oils.
Lots of art and to suit all pockets.

I'm so glad you enjoyed the studio. I love talking to people about art so it's no big deal for me to explain what I'm doing. Come back and visit again next time you're in town.

We had Stephen create a painting for our living room from a picture I took on my iPhone of Waterfall Park located here on Gateway Mountain which is just east of Asheville. The end result was absolutely stunning and looks great in our home and more importantly reminds us of what a beautiful place we live in. We look forward to work with Stephen on another piece of artwork in the future!

Thank you! The waterfall piece I did for you was so much fun to work on and I was glad I got to deliver it in person and see your mountaintop house! I look forward to any future painting I do for your amazing home.

His style appears to be reflective light gold underlay. It appears backlit or light from within the painting. Very unusual and unique style. A must see.

We started following St Clare Art a few years ago and from the moment we walked into his gallery we became fans. So glad to visit him in his new space. I've never seen anything like the way the light plays across his pieces and could just get lost in them. Stephen takes time to talk to guests about his work and his unique style and technique and we can't wait to have one of these wonderful works adorn our house! Love this!!

I loved the art that I saw in his studio in the River Arts District. I bought a small painting, and commissioned 2 more this summer. Each was incredibly beautiful- the process he uses has depth to it, and the play of light is glorious. Do yourself a favor and don't miss this- even better, buy something to take home with you. (He also has a "booth" at Woolworth Walk.)

I was in Asheville on a short visit with my parents. On one of these days, we decided to check-out the art 'area'.

As I was meandering through the labyrinth that is the River Arts District, I came across a lot of what you'd expect to be there: tons of abstraction, tons of tea cups & the like. Stereotypically, this average polyglot-which, for some reason, many are in love with-was plainly said: a bore...

How lucky was I that my mode of blindly navigating the many paths led me to Stephen's studio.

I vividly remember the first piece I saw: it was a landscape-full of trees. And, yes I've seen other tree-landscapes, but this one was something much different. The light reflected from an amazing glaze finish, but there was also an inner-light emanating from what was the vanishing-point of the piece: simply breathtaking!

After perusing the other great works towards the rear of the studio, I noticed that my mother had struck up a conversation with the 'working' artist. Yes, he was in the midst of applying a modeling compound to an actual piece.

I approached apprehensively, as I am not one to normally engage into this type of situation.

Amazing fact #2: Stephen is one of the warmest-nicest guys I've met, and I was only in the studio for a mere 45 mins. He was more-than-willing to share insights as to his process, and other similar inquiries-really open&cool guy!!!

AND, what might be Stephen's 2nd-best quality (#1: the art (it's really a tie)) is he really cares about anyone and everyone who has the chance to explore his working-studio!

Following my visit, I randomly emailed Stephen with a question on glazing, and he RESPONDED!!!!

This is a rarified human-being: a master of his craft, and a lover of others.

I know this is a long "review," but I thought it necessary to opine.

Please, follow, subscribe-to, purchase, or just take in the amazing pieces he is constantly creating!!!
