Go early morning. Great to go bird watching. Saw Redwing black birds, Green heron, Swifts, Blue Birds, sparrows. Lots of bird nesting boxes. Meadow for butterflies. No restrooms but Library near by. In shaded parking lot in the back is the perimeter trail around beaver lake. Loved the walk around the lake too. Lake walk about 2 miles.

We are avid bird watchers. This sanctuary is small and quite pretty. We saw several hummingbirds feeding on the orange jewelweeds. No other birds to speak of, but we were there in the middle of the day. There were a number of turtles in the lake.

This birding trail is obviously important to it's home community, as it is very well maintained. I spent 2-3 hours there this morning and thoroughly enjoyed my time. It was easy to locate and I was thrilled when I spotted a big group of Cedar Waxwings, one of my all time favorite birds!

It was a cold and dreary late December day and not a bird was stirring not even a titmouse. It was still a wonderful walk with a nice boardwalk and trees and waterfront views.

Beaver Lake Bird Sanctuary is a very special place in Asheville! The Elisha Mitchell Audubon Society (local) raised the money to save this area from becoming just another strip mall in Asheville. The land instead became a beautiful place for birds, native plant species and other critters. I was blessed to be a part of this organization for many years. The sanctuary later created a drainage pond to filter rain water coming off of Merrimon Avenue which polluted Beaver Lake. This was a big project involving many local folks' time and money. Removing invasive plant species is an ongoing project designed to create a natural environment for birds which may be local or migratory. Beaver Lake is separate from the sanctuary and different rules apply. You may walk your leashed dog at the sanctuary but must have a permit at Beaver Lake which is owned by the homeowners association. As you enjoy walking around this beautiful place, please know it was created with a lot of love and continues to be maintained by folks with great big hearts.

Lovely area to enjoy nature, look at Beaver Lake and watch birds, in an upscale area of North Asheville.

Wonderful to run or walk loops. Both trail and sidewalk, around lake. Very unique lake. Some nice homes. Some woods. Wildlife. Birds. Not too crowded but will see people. Only reason it got 4 and not 5 stars is parking- but there are several areas to park so keep looking and walk around. Well done walking area for that region.

I went in the winter, so there weren't too many birds around. It was a nice little stroll outside on a wooden walkway for a warmer winter day. It is not too long of a walk.

You never know what you will see here, but that is part of the delight. The short walk through wetlands, lakeside and woods provides a variety of habitats. Plenty of benches mean even those who need to rest often can enjoy a visit. There is always something flitting about. On various visits here, we have had great closeup sightings of: green heron at his post, stalking and fishing; pileated woodpecker on a log near the ground and fully visible for over a minute; mandarin ducks on the pond; wrens bopping about in the bushes, and of course all the common species you would expect. We don't always see something thrilling, but every visit is enjoyable.
