Visited on 9/12/2021. Area is filled with vagrants. People are begging for doggy bags or money. The place is absolutely filthy!! In the adjacent areas are needle collection bins, un-eaten food, beer cans and cigarette butts. I would stay (5) blocks from this area unless this is ok with you!

Our almost 2 year old daughter loves playing in water so we planned this stop at Splashville in Pack Square just for her. She was all excited, in her swimsuit and ready to splash. Imagine her disappointment when we find out it is closed for repairs. Shut down on July 27 for plumbing issues. Locals informed us that it happens every year and that they were surprised it lasted as long as it did this year. Not schedumed to be up and runnjng until the middle of August. Major disappointment.

We were here on a Monday about 5 pm, so that may be a factor; but the open Square has changed since the last time I was there. Then; clean, lots of families and students. Now: trash, homeless sleeping with their belongings, couples on the ground making out and groping each other; no families, lots of students. (Get a clue, then get a room.)

Downtown Asheville has become a fun experience by itself. We heard about the Topless Protest and came to see what would happen. Asheville lived up to the hype and was just amazing. Asheville has one of the most European like cities in the US, it has bars, mirco beers, street kids, hippes, amazing drum circles, paranormal things all over the place... and amazing street performers everywhere. It is a friendly and enchanting city (if you are open minded and alternative lifestyle friendly all the better) Many people visit Asheville and then find they wish to live there. I am now one of the people who will be calling this place home soon.

I've always enjoyed visiting this area over the years. Quality retail stores and food in the area. Do not miss the art museum. The Hemp festival was happening and many interesting booths there.

While visiting be sure to see if anything is happening at Pack Square. This last weekend was Leaf and a health & wellness event the weekend before.

Located in the downtown area.. near the police dept and court house ..
Very nice park. Metered parking and after hours free parking nearby.
Has nice grassy lawn, splash zone for kids, benches, and several memorials, etc. in the park area. Restrooms are available in Park building.
Within walking distance to several restaurants, shops, etc.

We visited the park a couple of times during our trip in both the day and night and it is truly a wonderful place. During the day there are 2 places for kids to play in like a water park and at night there are musicians playing music.

Pack Square and park is very nice but the park and city attitude has created an environment that caters to panhandlers.

I thought there would be more to do in the actual city of Asheville - not that we didn't enjoy it, but the stores all closed at 6pm and the Woolworth's (which now hosts various artists' work) had slim pickings, but it was fun to walk through and see everything. Since we did oudoorsy activities during the day we had looked forward to eating in Asheville and shopping at night - but had to save it for the weekend since most things were closing up by 6 pm. We did enjoy our Saturday afternoon shopping and eating. We did check out Topps (for shoes - for all those 'nut and granola' comfy shoes you might like and can't find in the typical department stores) ; some other fun stores were fun to look in for beads and hippie attire or cute items, but I thought it was a bit sparse and I had hoped there would have been more to see and do. Overall the city was pretty easy to navigate and do in an afternoon; We did check out the river arts district and watched the glass blowers - I bet when there is more of an arts festival or something the city would be more interesting and offer more going on. We got our true 'lay-of-city' by taking the LaZoom Comedy bus tour early in our stay so we saw areas we knew we'd want to go back to. The pubs and restaurants were okay although we were traveling with teens so we weren't really bar hopping and didn't experience any of the places for later night music. I would love to have tried the Sky Bar --- where we could see people hanging out on the fire escapes --- but was somewhat disappointed with the overall shopping experience. Asheville is definitely a very casual town--- no real dressing up required and other than a short wait at Cucina24 --- we were able to get seated in most restaurants pretty quickly.
