We remember visiting Mast General Store in Valley Cruces years ago and thought it was a really neat place. Then they started expanding all over and seems they've gotten more corporate. The charm is gone and replaced with a lot more major brand names. On our recent visit, this location was very crowded -- not the best feeling during a pandemic. We did look at some items but didn't purchase anything. Think we'll skip it next time we're in town.

I went in for the first time thinking I would buy a new pair of hiking pants IF they had my size. I require a short or petite size which is hard to find in normal outdoor stores. Well I bought 2 pairs of the exact brand I wear! I also bought a new raincoat that’s a bit longer and softer than my North Face one. I saw lots of clothes I liked. They even allow trying on which stores in FL are not doing. Also the home decorating area is cute. Oh boy all the old time candy! Different brands of shoes, I could go on and on. I simply loved this store!

We were on our way back from a family vacation and traveled through downtown Asheville to check it out. After NUMEROUS trips through Mast General Store in Boone, I thought this would be something cool for our three teenagers to wander through and I had some family birthdays coming up. The idea of buying something unique and local to the area was shot down. When we arrived, we were NOT greeted at all by employees, but received looks over face coverings. As we wandered around, employees eyeballed and followed us around the store. We were never asked if we needed help at any point while we were in the store. I walked downstairs to find my husband and to look around. While downstairs, an employee circled us and followed us BACK upstairs? Again, never asking if we needed assistance. Once upstairs, this same employee was whispering with another employee and staring. So, I went to get my husband and two teenage boys/girl so we could go. We walked into the candy barrel following the directional lines posted on the floor. An employee behind the register was staring and threw up her hands numerous times while looking at us. NEVER saying a word to us. She seemed very upset and frustrated, but never said anything to anyone of us. Come to find out, there was a sign and gloves before you walked through the candy barrel that requested you wear gloves before handing the bags of candy. So I’m assuming, the employee behind the register was upset that my daughter picked up a bag of gum balls and my son picked up one other item without gloves. Now, mind you, we had picked up and looked at NUMEROUS things throughout the store as were ALL the other customers in the store. I observed all around once I figured out what was going on. THEN.....that same employee who was doing the hand dance, came into the candy barrel area, picked up a bag of gum balls (with no glove) and took it to the register for a customer. I guess our teenagers hands were transmitting all kinds of bugs and not the employee, who happens to handle money? Needless to say, we will not be back to this location and will not recommend to anyone traveling.

pcjohnson2, I’m sorry that you felt unwelcome in the store. These are difficult times for all of us and sometimes our focus on safety measures comes across as overly stringent. Our intent is to provide excellent guest experiences and at the same time balance keeping the store safe for our employees and guests. We are working with fewer staff members than we do in regular circumstances, but we are doing our best to get it right. We appreciate your review because it gives us the chance to improve our team. It also gives us insight into how our customers are perceiving the application of safety measures. It is certainly not our intent to have our actions misinterpreted to the point of losing a customer. We hope you will give us another try the next time you’re in Asheville.

We went based on the recommendation of a friend who had been to the Mast General Store in Boone. This is a gem- a step back in time except for the prices!! We did have fun with the candy barrels and found the perfect outdoor hat for hubby. A must see while you are in Ashville. Bought some local honey and gifts for granddaughter...take your time and have a good time!!
