The event was fun enough and the people were very cool, a real pleasure to talk to, but the class part was somewhat haphazard and disappointing.

I've taken a lot of cooking classes before and normally they range from the cheaper versions, where the cook takes people through in small groups, to the more expensive ones (e.g. Sur La Table classes), in which every person gets a workstation, all the ingredients, and every person cooks each dish start to finish. This class was priced at the Sur La Table level but functioned more like the cheaper ones; everyone watched or divided prep tasks among the group and then one single large dish was cooked. The discussion of the steps was a bit vague, there wasn't really much prepared discussion of alternative choices or techniques that one would use, and in two cases ingredients were in short supply or missing. I've never attended a cooking class with missing ingredients before.

As I said though, the teacher and students were lovely and the space was great, and with questions I did manage to learn a fair bit, and also generally enjoy myself. It made for a fun afternoon.

So if you're looking for an enjoyable event with some cooking thrown in then this is a great choice! If you're looking for an actual class however, particularly of the level this is priced at, this might not be a great fit.

Came Feb 2020 for Applachian food class. We were celebrating a friends bdy. Fun, relaxed, and casual w byob cooking class w everyone participating. Class size was 8 - easy size to move about and see how meal unfolded. Olfi says she’s not an official chef but has lots to share. Answered tricky and demonstrated tricky skills. Meal was delicious a with portions aplenty.

My wife and I were visiting our son and daughter-in-law in Asheville when they invited us to join them in a Mountain Kitchen cooking class and dinner they had signed up for. We said "sure, why not," but had no expectations one way or another. Were we ever in for a treat! The setting could not be more scenic, the host and instructor, Ofra, was warm, welcoming, and very knowledgeable, and the food (in this case, Indian cuisine), was absolutely delicious. And we made it ourselves! (As a life-long Manhattanite who is unaccustomed to making anything more for his dinner than reservations, this was no mean feat.) The class consisted of a mixed group of singles and couples who were all into the joyful spirit of the occasion and there were just enough of us to make for a special event without causing any crowding or getting in each other's way. If you plan to be in Asheville don't miss out on this very affordable, edifying -- and edible -- opportunity!

Ofri did an amazing job teaching my group of High School Junior/Seniors how to cook a full Italian meal! She was very knowledgeable and taught them kitchen skills that will apply to many more meals than just the one they cooked with her. It was also awesome that our cooking class turned into a service project, as she connected us with a home for disable veterans and we were able to share the fruits of our cooking labors! We had so much fun, enjoyed an amazing meal, and would DEFINITELY do this again with future groups! We look forward to seeing you again Ofri!

Ofri was a complete joy to work with from beginning to finish. We had a group of 22 people and this cooking event was flawless. The conversation, direction and cooking instruction were informative, fun and delicious! Do not hesitate to work with Ofri for any team buidling event. Her home is welcoming, spacious and a great atmosphere that encouraged conversation and collaboration. I would recommend this to any group looking to team build and have fun.

My 14 year old, aspiring chef son and I arrived at Ofri's beautiful modern home in the mountains above Asheville, for a hands-on, three hour plus class.

After introductions and the pouring of wine (BYOB), we settled in for an intense but low pressure evening of preparing our meal, all under the guidance of Ofri, a great and personable teacher who has lived for many years in Thailand.

Orfi's professional kitchen is quite large with a lot of room for preparation, cooking and socializing. The prep areas, counters and stools are situated around the perimeter of the room. Cooking takes place in the center of the room.

Everyone had multiple assignments of chopping, making rice, peeling, measuring and all the other tasks that go into preparing a multi-course Thai meal. Ofri expertly guided us through the process while gently correcting our mistakes and praising our successes.

The evening was fairly intense yet relaxed and FUN. I loved being in a professional's home for a cooking class rather than in a commercial facility. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes as there is a lot of work performed while standing. We spent about 3 ½ hours from our arrival to departure. The evening ends with a sit-down meal where students get to enjoy what they have created.

I highly recommend taking a class at Mountain Kitchen. We learned much about Thai food and cooking while thoroughly enjoying the experience. My son was absolutely blown away, the highlight of his week-long trip to Asheville. And mine too.

We took the class with another couple plus 4 people we didn't know. Everyone was very social. Learned how to make dumplings which was fun and somewhat craft-like. Received a yummy appetizer upon arrival and then got right into it making the fillings for the different kinds of dumplings. The dough had been pre-made but recipes were provided. My favorite was the soup-filled pork dumpling. Absolutely delicious. I know I will use what I learned to make dumpling appetizers in the future. My husband and I had a good time.

I reached out to Ofri regarding a specific class not listed on her schedule currently. She responded promptly (within 2 hours) and gave me the information I needed to get my group together and make my idea happen. Can't wait to get the opportunity to work with her in person!

The concept was cool but the execution and overall experience was poor. Based on other reviews, there seems to be a pattern in which Ofri overbooks the classes and crams people into her home kitchen. We were expecting a group of 10…there were 6 chairs in front of the island yet there were 17 of us in the class. She was overwhelmed, unwelcoming and distant. And we believe this was due to her being stretched thin. The food was horrible. I wish there was another word I could use but it’s the truth- it was bad…steps in the recipe were forgotten and skipped, and we ultimately felt gipped and taken advantage of for the amount of money we paid for this experience. The social setting was nice, but shouldn’t have been the star of the night. Also, this is community cooking, and Ofri was hesitant to ask students to wash their hands which is super unsanitary. I had to step in and create the standard of clean hands before cooking. She pointed out the various sinks we could all go to and wash our hands, and our station had watered down soap that didn’t sud in the least. This was ultra disgusting because this group of 17 were all hands on with the food that we would portion out and distribute once done. To be clear, we did not make our own individual meals, rather as a group we were hands on with peeling potatoes, flooding crepes, wrapping steak with prosciutto and pastry puff etc. Knowing so many barely washed hands were handling your food ruined the anticipation of the meal because we were peeling potatoes with our fingernails! You would think for $200+ a couple, there would be concentrated soap for the class, and the importance of clean hands would be expressed with conviction. Very stressful and unnerving and we had to ignore a bunch of red flags in order to muster our way through the class and ultimately through a few bites of the meal. Last but definitely not least, the first time she engaged us she questioned the origin of my husband’s first name and looked disappointed/underwhelmed that a Black person had a Hebrew name. It was a strange interaction, and he felt singled out and unnecessarily uncomfortable. Though she may have been curious, shocked, or whatever have you, it was a distasteful introductory convo to have in front of a group of people. She approached him and tried to educate him on the origin and asked him if he knew it was a Hebrew name. She shared that she was Islamic, and was curious when she saw his name on the roster, but his last name didn’t match. She may have thought it to be an innocent exchange however, he felt questioned in front of a group of people to explain his first and last name. Poor choice of convo, timing, and social awareness with diverse groups can definitely lead to extremely awkward moments regardless of your intentions- and that’s unfortunate. Overall, this was an extremely low bar for our first cooking class. Unfortunately, we would not recommend.

This seems harsh and very different to other feedback I received. Not sure how I feel about the religious undertone coming out of this review.

Friendly and educational experience. Picked up several handy tips: microwave garlic for 15-30 seconds to facilitate peeling, 400 degrees makes a stainless pan nonstick as food floats on a layer of steam, skip salting eggplant before use.

We did moussaka, Greek lemon chicken, rolled phyllo baclava "cigars, tzaziki, lentil spread.

Would sign up for another!
