Waechter's closed but a selection of fabrics is currently being offered by another purveyor in the same location. Bon Vivant Co is a second-hand and handmade home goods store with fine consignment, select finds, art and antiques. Also offered inside is a selection of vintage and organic cotton fabrics, knits, patterned, as well as custom printed fabrics from a local company specializing in grown and sewn in USA cotton fabric.

I would like to preface this review by saying I'm not a huge "review" writer - always seem to get too busy, however, after purchasing fabric from Waechter's I HAD to let everyone know how wonderful they are!! I am getting married this November at a resort in the Bahamas and knew I wanted my wedding dress to be dainty and feminine and cotton. I only had one fabric in mind - 100% Cotton Imported Dotted Swiss. I live in Chicago so after finding nothing that matched what I was looking for in the city, I started searching on the internet. I found Waechter's and they had EXACTLY what I was looking for. Ordering a sample of the fabric was easy and it arrived very quickly. Katherine was a pleasure to deal with when I called to make sure they had enough fabric to fulfill my order. The fabric arrived today, wrapped in tissue paper and a pretty bow along with a hand-written card from Elizabeth. To thank me for my order she even included a couple of buttons as well as an extra 1/2 yard of fabric (I ordered 6 yds & they had 6.5 yds on the bolt). Waechter's was simply a joy to work with - it is no wonder they have been in business for 80+ years! I look forward to sending them a picture of the dress when it is finished! :)

Sadly, this store has closed for business. I went there a couple of months ago and it was their last week to be open.

Waechter's is the most unbelievable fabric store in the Southeast. The selection and quality are unrivaled in this area. If you are a skilled seamtress or wish to find the "perfect" fabric for a special occasion and have your dressmaker make it for you, this is the only place to recommend, short of NYC. For anyone with interests in fabic this is a "do not miss".

I do a lot of garment sewing, and this shop is a treasure! It's the kind of place with all the nicer, natural fabrics (cotton, silk, wools) that are so difficult to find in chain retailers now. And their button selection was drool-worthy. They have a nice comfy chair for a husband to sit in after he's tired of trailing in your wake. Good selection of books, independent patterns, fabrics, buttons, and all the notions required to sew at a high level. They have beautiful cottons too. This shop is the place I'd need nearby if I ever retired away from the large metropolitan area I live in now. I'd never survive on chain fabric stores alone, must have a Waechter's-caliber fabric shop reasonably close or I'M NOT MOVING!

Waechter's is outstanding, both in the selection of fabrics available in the shop, and in the service provided to the "by mail" customer. Their prices are very reasonable, too! At one time I would have said "best outside of New York", but the situation in NYC has changed and many of the fabric stores are gone. So, we people who sew our own clothing are left with a few outstanding stores, widely scattered throughout the US: Rochester, MN; San Francisco, Portland, OR, perhaps Austin, TX and this one in Asheville. I'm sure there are others, but these are my "go back to" places. Waechter's makes it easy to shop online, since one employee photographs all new fabrics and puts them up on the website. The shop is in the edge of the Biltmore Village area in a buildling that used to be a factory. Free parking is right by the door.

I have been traveling to Asheville for years but somehow have missed this delightful store. Located near Biltmore Village, this store looks like nothing special from the exterior. But inside, it is a delight for the eyes. Most of the patterns have been made up so it is possible to look at the finished product. There is a wall of buttons and a cabinet full of beautiful ribbons. The fabrics range from Riley Blake and Kaffe Fassett to Liberty of London and hand-dyed silks. The staff is knowledgable and helpful. Their website has a video to show you exactly how to get there. Have fun!

This store has exceptional garment fabrics. It is one of the better privately owned fabrics stores that I've seen for fashion sewing in a long time. I did however think it was over priced compared to other stores that I've been in (and I'm not talking about Joanne's or Hancocks here..). Watch out for prices but this is really a great store and they have unique patterns as well.
