No Zen here. We reserved a tub and massage for $240. After we showered and were in our robes waiting to be shown to our hot tub, the manager, Christine, told us we must leave because we left our dog in the car (temperature outside was 39 degrees so no risk for the dog). She claimed their no pet policy is plastered on their web site and in the confirmation email we were sent. We checked, no mention of any pet policy in the confirmation email, no reference of a pet policy on their website or FAQ.

To add insult to injury, We had to fight to get our money back since we “cancelled “ within 24 hours! No offer of rescheduling. If we had known that dogs in cars are not allowed, we would have left her at home.

I've lived in Asheville since 2014 and was no stranger to Shoji. I often paid for the local soak (2 hours for the price of 1) on special occasions. Several years ago I purchased a Shoji gift certificate for my parents for Christmas and ensured at the front desk that I was purchasing that same package and that it could be used with my parents.
2019 was a bad year for them and so they planned on coming down the next (there was plenty of time, the gift certificate was good until December '22).
Covid made all of us hunker down for a while.

Long story short, they arrive tomorrow and are very excited about their two hour soak. I just called Shoji to book their appointment and found out that the 2 hour soak for 2 people has been bumped up to double price for half the time. Expensive, but their perogative.
However, the real surprise was that Shoji doesn't honor the terms that existed at the time of purchase. There seems to be no policy in place or fine print (and certainly none on the gift card I purchased) to protect my previous purchase.

To avoid a complete loss and my parents' disappointment, I just had to pay an additional $70 for 1 hour less than I'd originally paid for. That is $163.20 to sit in a tub for 1 hour. As much as I'd like them to be able to have what was promised, I can't justify paying almost $300 (with service fee) for a two hour soak. Under these new terms, I'd have never considered purchasing the certificate in the first place.

I could accept them not honoring the extra hour(since the local special no longer exists). However, I cannot accept the rationale behind the upcharge for the basic 1 hour soak(see image 1), because I purchased the certificate in good faith at the advertised standard rate (which is printed on my gift certificate, see image 2).

If there was some amazing add-on service now included or perhaps even updates to the premises and tubs, it would make sense. But it's all the same. The place has become a true ripoff and I didn't want to believe the other locals who told me so (sunk cost, I'd already purchased the certificate), but it is definitely true. I work at a remote tech company and keep an Asheville Area Recommendations itinerary doc to share across the company when people are traveling Southeast. This one is coming off the list unfortunately, as I can no longer recommend it in good conscience. I just don't want to support a business that acts in bad faith.

Dear 697jennaw, I am incredibly sorry for the our part in the confusion surrounding the gift certificate policy. All of our gift certificates are worth a dollar figure only and may be applied towards any of our services. The reason for this is that more often than not, recipients prefer to book alternative services versus the intention of the gift giver. The other reason for the gift certificates being worth a specific dollar figure is because we offer a five-year period of time for use, but cannot guarantee rates for such a lengthy period of time. We very much appreciate the feedback you have offered.

We had an awkward interaction with staff. Please be aware that a 20% tip is included in the bill on your credit card, regardless of how the service was; so, in fact, it is not a gratuity at all but part of the price of the service. It cannot be refunded to you; they will not return it in cash. If you would like to give more for excellent service, you may give extra, but you cannot get anything back. Some of our party tipped in cash not knowing a 20% service charge had been added. The manager at the time would not take it off the bill, rather he chased down the massage therapist who had left, she came back and handed the cash tip back to the client. Very awkward and unprofessional.
In addition, the soak tub destroyed my bathing suit by permanently discoloring the suit. (see attached photo)
That said, my massage therapist gave a wonderful massage.

Hi rydersf, It definitely does seem that our staff's best intention to return your gratuity could have been handled differently. Certainly we will use this as a coaching moment. We are upfront about the automatic service charge on both our website and online booking sites - the service charge is also referenced in the confirmation emails that are sent our at time of booking. Regarding the tub ruining your bathing suit, there is nothing in the tubs that would cause fading. Having said that, should you wish to speak directly about the situation we will definitely connect you with our facilities manager who can inform the situation better.

My wife and I booked an appointment to treat ourselves for our anniversary trip to Asheville. We chose the Awasu couples package which includes a 60 minute tub soak, 60 minute massage and 30 minute Thai foot massage. A good value for the money in our opinion. You do have to drive up a mountain to get there which can be a little scary if you aren't used to it. Very tight conditions. The staff was very nice and really made an effort to make you feel COVID safe with masks, sanitizer, plexiglass shields. While they prepped our private tub, we took a rinse off shower and changed into robes and sandals provided. We opted for the tub side tea service which was very delicious and hot. You're given the option of soaking in the hot tub and have access to the sauna as well so you can choose your time how you like it. They alerted us via speaker next to the timer when time was up. After, we headed up to prep for our massages. A brief talk with the masseuse and upstairs we went. Very well done massage. We don't get them very often, but it was very relaxing. Overall I would recommend this spot if you're looking for a fun, different massage experience. Might be more expensive than other spas, but we also chose this place for the experience.

First let me see that this could have been a very good experience. I can only review the hot tub experience. The setting was beautiful. The road up was a little harrowing since it was one way with cars also coming down at the same but it was not horrible. When we arrived in the very small waiting area, another customer was complaining that she was charged for a 90 minute massage when she had only asked for a 60 minute massage. They told her that she had to pay for it because I guess she did not stop it after 60 minutes. I am not sure but it was not relaxing to start off the spa experience hearing an unhappy customer. When you arrive, you take a shower first in a fairly pleasant dressing room. As stated in previous reviews, the showers are not very private but there is a curtain at least but you feel like you are sharing the shower with another person. It was not too bad because I was with another person in my family. After that, you are taken to a private hot tub in a wooden structure. One of the problems was that it was hot that day and sunny. There is an open roof so we were very hot. They had taken down the shade sail. We got a sunburn in the hot tub! Anyway, that saltwater tubs were nice except that we thought we would be in a small building with a roof. The main problem was that you have to get out of the tub every 15 minutes to hit a button to run the jets. You have to do this four times in one hour. I am running out of characters but could go on....just skip this.

Spent the afternoon at Shoji after exploring the Biltmore Estate. The day could not have been any more perfect. We booked the Awasu package and spend the first our soaking in the hydrotherapy therapy tub looking out into the forest. We then got a couples massage in a private residence typically used as a B&B, repurposed during covid. The protocols for safety were excellent and we left feeling rejuvenated. Definitely a must when in Ashville!

I surprised my husband, for his birthday, with a trip here. Other than the road being extremely narrow, allowing only 1 vehicle at a time & the a/c vent directly over the bed, this was an amazing getaway. I had booked a 1 hr private salt tub & 1 hr deep tissue massage and neither disappointed. Our massage therapists were Ashley & Stacey and they knew exactly what they were doing. Our room was The House of Earth and it was relaxing & gorgeous. The rustic yet tranquil setting was what I was looking for and exactly what we needed. We are already looking forward to a return visit.

This is not Japanese at all. It is basically $244 for 2 people to sit in a hot tub for 90 minutes. Its way overpriced - plus $24 for a pot of tea for two. We had to wait for 10 minutes by the sauna before we were shown to our hot tub which was right around the corner. We thought we would have our own tub house but ours was right off of the check in office. So be sure to ask about that, Other tub houses were scattered around the property. The hot tub was grimy, I ran my finger over the wall, and it left a white streak. Then changing room was crowded and no privacy. We were very disappointed in what we got for the price.

An amazing hidden gem right outside of the heart of Asheville on the side of a mountain. Perfect get away while maintaining social distancing. Everything was immaculately clean. Definitely recommend for a romantic get away for couples. We did the package that consisted of a 60 min soak and 60 min massage chair. Highly, highly recommend if you are in the area. The staff was so very accommodating and nice and the entire atmosphere was very serene and peaceful. Amazing views.

Overall it was an average experience. The check in area and changing areas are very small. There is little space between the showers and the changing areas so water was everywhere. It was a Monday so not very busy but still get cramped trying to shower and change in a tight space with strangers . The hot tub was nice , very strong chlorine smell . The massage was average - I asked for medium pressure but never really received it- it was more of a gentle rub . I told the therapist during that I would like a firmer touch but nothing really changed.
