Rangers are wonderful
Apr 2021
Must stop here prior to going in to the Preserve to find out local conditions and get the very best maps. Much easier to deal with paper maps believe it or not as you won't have terrific cell services. Everything is well marked, so you don't need the maps for that. But there is tons of information on the official maps and they offer wonderful tips and guidance .

Worth a stop

There is a wealth of information at this Welcome Center that centers on how to get the most from your visit to Big Cypress. One of the Interpreters will be happy to show you roads you can drive on to see this unique landscape or trails that you might like to hike. You will find out about the birds, mammals and reptiles that inhabit this section of Florida, as well as the history surrounding the area. There is a small gift shop where you can get lots of different items and static displays of the flora and fauna of the area. Behind the Welcome Center is a nice walkway that leads to an overlook of water and mangroves where alligators and manatees can be seen, although it is not a "sure thing" that they will be there all the time.

Good suggestions and abundant wildlife

This was my first stop on the Tamiami Trail. I learned about Loop Road and other helpful stops in the Preserve. The boardwalk here provided an excellent viewing platform for alligators, birds, and some manatees. Don't miss it.

Nice place to stop and see loads of alligators for free!
Feb 2020
My Mom and I stopped in here on our way to Key West, coming from Fort Myers. About half way across the Tamiami Trail. Nice place for a family picnic - tables provided. The Welcome Center staff answered many of our questions and were very professional and knowledgeable. Gift store and clean restrooms provided also. Walking along the boardwalk here we saw many birds (Great Blue Herons), turtles, large fish and especially - alligators! And lots of them. Some of them were very large. Nice place to stop at when you just need that break from all the driving!

Great break in your drive

Plenty of parking. Clean restrooms. Great upclose views of birds, fish and, of course, gators. Safe place to take a break.

A good place to stop
Nov 2019
There is water, there is a restroom and there is a wifi.
What else you might need after a long road?
They also have some very useful and interesting information there.

Very nice to stop, explore, and stretch your legs while looking for wildlife
Mar 2019
We did not plan near enough time to take our Tamiami Roadtrip and need to repeat again with time to explore the area a lot more. Big Cypress Swamp Welcome Center was the only place we had time to literally stop in and look around more than the gift shop area, which is small but nice. They have a decent boardwalk here where we were able to see lots of alligators and not buy into a air boat package or pay a high upfront fee when we were on a bit of a time schedule. If you have lots of time to explore Tamiami, or if you are just roadtripping through and don't have tons of time at all, this is a one place you could stop at real quick and then move on. We recommend, especially if you really don't have time for much more than bathroom breaks or stretching your legs briefly.

Nice facility and staff, but on the half-mile boardwalk-style nature walk, we saw very little wildlife.
Jan 2020
My wife and I visited this welcome center at midday on a Sunday in early January 2020. We are tourists and senior citizens. The weather was sunny but temperatures were relatively cool that day, with a high temp of 69 degrees. The building is modern and attractive, and inside there were many staffers in uniform asking us if we needed any help or advice. It actually seemed overstaffed. There is a small gift shop and educational exhibits inside the building. Just outside there is a picnic area in front near the highway, and a short boardwalk in the back yard where we saw an alligator and some manatees in the adjacent canal. It was a nice treat to see the manatees lounging just beneath the surface of the water, coming up occasionally for a breath of air. Then we walked a mile on the longer boardwalk, a nature walk that goes deeper into the Everglades forest. The boardwalk runs a half-mile through somewhat dry brush, ending at a small waterway. We were disappointed because we saw no gators and few interesting birds, and because the boardwalk stayed close to the highway, we always heard the noise of passing vehicles. Generally our walk was devoid of wildlife sightings. But it is an attractive woodsy/ scrubby environment with interesting plants and trees. This was our third visit to the Everglades in 8 years time, always in the winter, and this welcome center was the least special of all the places we visited in the Everglades. Our favorite spot is the Anhinga Trail, a nature trail located further east in the Everglades park where gators and exotic birds are abundant, even in winter. And if you are near the Big Cypress Swamp Welcome Center and you want to see more wildlife without working hard, just head to the HP Williams Roadside Park at 48900 Tamiami Trail E, Ochopee, FL 34141, four miles east of the welcome center. This roadside park is a picnic area with restrooms and a short boardwalk overlooking a canal filled with gators, and there are plenty of exotic Anhinga birds and great blue herons to see in the tree branches..... and this happens less than a hundred yards from where your car is parked. So if you are old, or lazy, or disabled, or if you have mobility problems, the HP Williams roadside park is a great place to see wildlife without hiking. Easy.
