American artist/photographer Clyde Butcher had the vision to buy 13 acres...

American artist/photographer Clyde Butcher had the vision to buy 13 acres in Big Cypress Swamp - and you can experience it, too. The Swamp Walk (or the longer Photographer's Walk) 'in" Big Cypress Swamp (yes, you're walkin' IN the water), smack dab in the middle of the Everglades (between Naples/Venice and Miami on the Tamiami Trail), is amid alligators, water moccasins and in the bosom of nature - it is not to be missed! This is a "bucket list" check-off. Treat yourself to a night or two at the Bungalow, if in season crack fresh stone crabs from Grimm's (Everglades City) and eat under the chickee, and chill listening to the sounds of the swamp. The next morning when you're sipping coffee and looking out the second-floor window, you'll see the resident alligator glide effortlessly into the swamp pond. Before you get the bagels out of the toaster, the gator has moved on into the darkness and magic of the swamp, and you're there left to marvel at the beauty of the primordial cypress trees, moss and birds that surround you.

In preparing for our vacation to Miami, we purposefully decided to drive back to Tampa via US41 in order to visit Clyde Butcher's Big Cypress Gallery. My wife is an artist/painter, and I have been in awe of Ansel Adams photography for most of my life. When I discovered that Clyde had a gallery in the middle of the Everglades,... More

Forget the Hajj to Mecca. If you’re a landscape photographer, or just a fan of landscape photography, you must travel to Clyde Butcher’s Big Cypress Gallery in Ochopee, Florida-- just a few miles from Everglade City. My guess is that you, as well as great large-format shooters like Adams and Weston (Edward and Brett), would agree that Mr. Butcher’s work... More

The woman running the gallery was friendly, informative, and not a high-pressure salesperson. You can walk around, enjoy museum-quality photographs, both by Clyde Butcher and his wife. Glad we stopped.

Thank you for your kind words. We all love and enjoy the Big Cypress Gallery. The Butcher family spends a great deal of time and energy in presenting this beautiful environment that we are privileged to enjoy. Clyde's images take us to places rarely seen by the average public. Most of Clyde's images are also presented with a short narrative... More

A must see in the Everglades, and artistic and beautiful representation of nature from the Everglades to Aspen and even Cuba. Bring your checkbook though, but decent piece of art here will run you five digits. But there's also plenty of postcards and calendar sized versions that are more affordable, as well as other local artists besides Clyde Butcher. You... More

"Like Ansel Adams, Clyde Butcher's remarkable photographs give us an access to nature we rarely see or experience. They not only reveal the intimate and majestic beauty of the Everglades-and the need to save this fragile environment - they also remind us of the abiding kinship we mortals share when we work together to preserve these magnificent places. Butcher's art... More

We had just pulled in and Clyde was walking out. We got to quickly say hi before walking into the gallery. He captures Big Cypress in amazing photos. You can purchase your favorites even small black and whites. He us compared to Ansel Adams and I agree. A don't miss place.

From Clyde's new book Big Cypress Swamp "Living and working in the environment I love is as close to paradise as I think I can get on these earth. Niki and I are very grad that the prediction of failure at having a gallery in the middle go nowhere turned out to be wrong. We are humbled buy the success... More

Forest behind the gallery house is fabulous. Paintings I gallery are very nice but also very pricy. If you happen to visit here, it will not take much of your time, but you should do it.

Thank you for your comments. Clyde Butcher's compelling black and white photograghs chronicle some of America's most beautiful and complex ecosystems. The exquisite beauty and depth of his work draws the viewer into a relationship with nature. For more than forty years he has been preserving the untouched areas of the landscape on film using 8X10",11X14" or 12X20" view camera.... More
