We just did the drive on a beautiful cold February afternoon and are inspired to come back. We would love to try camping at one of the sites along the river and explore more of the area on foot. We really appreciated the washrooms along the way.

Two different people recommended that we take the scenic drive down Route 128 along the Colorado River on the way to Moab. We were so happy we did as we got a feel for the area and got a chance to really experience the natural erosion of the Colorado River. We wished we had more time to explore the various trails and canyons off the drive. Drive west on I 70 and take the exit at Cisco to Moab.

If you have extra time, turn off Main St onto Highway 128 and take a drive down the raod that hugs the CO river. There are many places to pull off and take pics and the views are amazing. To be so close to the CO River was cool. It's a two lane road and lots of places to camp on the river. I turned around at the Big Bend area but the road keeps going.

We just left Arches National Park and heard of the Colorado Riverway area and wanted to check it out. This road traverses along the river and you get to see the sights and sounds of the Colorado and the pretty red mountains. Its a journey for all and should not be missed.

We had visited the Arches NP on Sunday & were leaving town Monday morning when we noticed a walk bridge over the Colorado. We took a hike then decided to drive down the road by the river. It was a fantastic viewing experience.

I love camping and I love kayaking. This is by far the BEST place to camp & kayak because you are RIGHT on the river! Best to go in the cooler months when there are less bugs to: bug you. ;-) Just hearing the roar of the river was all it took to make me fall asleep next to my campfire.

We had extra time to explore and took a drive along Rt 128 just north of Moab. Beautiful views driving through the canyon. Bike paths, white water rafters, camping sites along the way. We stopped to walk across the bridge at Lion's Park.

This was our second time taking Hwy 128. So glad we had the opportunity since we didn't remember much of the first time.
Loved it! Lots of campgrounds along the way. Primitive ones, but all had campers & tents filling them.
Lots of bikes on the road. Be careful! Speed limit is lower than 55 through much of it. Take your time & enjoy!

We drove down to Moab from I-70 just to drive Highway 128. It’s definitely a incredible drive along the Colorado River lined with really high red rock cliffs for miles & miles going north back to I-70. The canyon has many campgrounds along the Colorado River. It’s definitely a very scenic drive worth seeing !

Arches and Canyonland are fabulous but the Rt128 drive from RT70 to Moab was the most spectacular part of the trip. I recommend you take it for your arrival into Moab and when leaving take the less scenic 191 back to Rt70. We didn't know what to expect when taking the Cisco exit off Rt70, just looking for an alternate route to Moab. The first 30 minutes was empty desert, Cisco is deserted town and we almost turned around thinking we had made a mistake. My judgement was being questioned by my colleagues. But then a drop down into the Colorado River canyon for the last 40 minutes was spectacular...it felt like we were in the bottom of the Grand Canyon! Having left Yellowstone and Grand Tetons just prior I can truly say this had the most WOW factor. Road was curving but safe and comfortable. Each turn a more jaw dropping view. They call this Moab Canyon. You can stop at the Red Cliffs Lodge on the river (25 minutes before you get to Moab) for lunch if you get there before 2pm (we were too late) but the views and setting are special. Otherwise no services of any kind until you reach Moab. The river is the eastern border of Arches NP you can't see from the park and it was nice when inside Arches to have that prior great memory to accompany the arches. Take that route, I turned from goat to hero in choosing that way to Moab.

Is there a specific spot we can let the kids play in the rocks/shallow water or is it all fast moving current?
Written July 25, 2018
I do not think you should let the kids play in the water. The river appears to me to be too fast and I did not see any calm areas.

Hello, is it possible to do the Colorado Riverway if we are coming to Moab from Monument Valley or when leaving Moab to head towards Albuquerque? We are spending one night at Monument Valley, 2 nights at Moab (to spend one day in Arches and one day in Canyonlands), and then heading towards Albuquerque.
thank you in advance!

The colorado riverway rund east from Moab or you can come from the east off of Interstate 70. You could do the drive as a day trip in about 3 hours from Moab to I-70 and then back to Moab. It is worth the time.

What is the camping Loki, are there nice places next to the river to pitch a tent?

What kind of camping accomodations are available?
Written July 22, 2015
There are small campgrounds along the river, very bare bones, with pit toilets and I think a running water source. We stopped to use the toilet at one. As mentioned there are a couple really nice Dude Ranches up towards Castle Valley with lots of cabins and accomodations. I'm not sure under whose jurisdiction these campsites fall but no doubt the National Park Service or the National Forest Service, because it is a protected river. I would check with both of them for more information. You may also want to check with Dead Horse Point State Park which is in the area and overlooks Canyonlands National Park and the Colorado River. They have rustic campsites with great views. There is also an International Hostel in Moab, UT called the Lazy Lizard.
