I am an avid ghost tour participant and this one is by far my favorite. I bought the book “A Ghostly Tour of Harpers Ferry by Shirley Dougherty” that was shown on the Harpers Ferry Ghost Tour Website. I read this before the tour, and it did not disappoint but when I attended the actual tour then all the stories proceeded to come to life right before your eyes. Harpers Ferry is a quaint town with a lot of history and intrigue.
Our guide was Mr. Rick owner and historian for Harpers Ferry and let me tell you it was AWESOME. We had a mixture of young adults, with some still being in high school, a family from London and everyone was fully engaged in learning about the civil war, John Brown’s raid and all the rich history contained in Harpers Ferry.
Mr. Rick is a great storyteller, full of extensive knowledge of the history of Harper’s Ferry, great singer and all the stories came to life with his retelling. Rick was very informative, and he kept the group interacting and engaged as he was telling the stories. He did a great job blending unexplained events with historical accounts. We were walking through town it was like we were transported back in time with the dress of Rick and how the stories were told. As we were standing/sitting at each place as the story was told you could feel the characters, see the characters, and totally feel the story come alive. It lasted almost 2 hours and it was not enough time for me, I wanted and needed more, but spooky enough that I was also glad to not be staying in town this night.

Make sure you arrive early take in the sights before the tour a lot of great places to visit and learn about the history of Harpers Ferry but wear comfortable shoes and sturdy shoes because you will be doing a lot of walking which makes it that much more fun. I recommend that you try to park at the Amtrac station because there is no real parking in Harpers Ferry. There is a shuttle bus to take you there but at night the bus does not run so you would be stuck.

Three couples took the tour with Rick and had a wonderful time! He was very informative, fun, musical, knowledgeable about current events and past history, and friendly. Rick dressed in period clothing, took on the persona and accents of various historical figures and taught and entertained our group for four hours. We saw all of the interesting aspects of Harpers Ferry and alternated sitting and listening with looking at pictures, walking, and seeing the historical town and beautiful countryside. Rick sang period songs to us, had us join in singing with him, told jokes, and shared numerous interesting historical stories. Through the course of the tour he got to know us also and it was a very enriching experience. A wonderful time was had by all!

Thanks you for attending my Historical Tour and for your very kind words/review! I am so happy that you all had as good of a time learning about Harpers Ferry as I had telling you about it! Thanks again!

There is something magical about encountering history on-site. Rick’s expertise in his field takes this sensation to a whole new level. His enthusiasm, passion and delivery elevate the experience from simply learning about history to encountering it. He has a way of bringing the characters to life. Rick asked questions and posed options to keep us fully engaged. His knowledge is far reaching as he set the framework of factors beyond that affected what happened locally. He even gave us handouts with resources to expand on what we had just learned. Our only regret is that we couldn’t spend more time with him.

We had a visitor arrive just before Thanksgiving and wondered what we could do to entertain him during the pandemic. We took the historical walking tour and it was WONDERFUL!! I highly recommend it!

We had two teenage boys, two middle aged fat people, and one senior and everyone of us thoroughly enjoyed it! I have a bad back and was concerned about whether I could take the walking and especially the hills and stairs, but the pace allowed sitting times where we heard fascinating history-I never had an issue with my back!

Our tour ended up running an hour extra because Rick offered to share other stories if we wanted to keep going. We kept saying please and he generously continued!

Today, two months later, I received a post card from our visitor thanking us (for the fourth time!) for taking him on the tour. He said he is still sharing Rick"s stories with his friends in Michigan. If he visits again, we will see if Rick can give us a tour of Gettysburg!

Rick was an extremely knowledgeable tour guide who is very passionate about the history of this beautiful area. He was open to questions, and did not rush us through a "canned" script. His tour is not for someone wanting a 30 minute overview, as he presents history from many time periods. We appreciated that he started the tour in beautiful St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church, where we could escape from the heat, yet also took time to walk us around various parts of Lower Harpers Ferry. My husband walks with a cane, but Rick was very accommodating and made the tour an enjoyable experience for us both. Certainly well worth the price of the tour!

Behind the history knowledge & uncommon stories. Rick, guide, paced tour very comfortably for two older, flatlanders who were faced with Harper's Ferry magnificent hills. Great sense of humor, terrific singing voice & in depth knowledge. Exactly what we were hoping for.

Rick's tour of Harpers Ferry was a unique experience for me. I am more used to touring with a group of people at venues where the guides are volunteers. Generally, those tours have been shorter, less personal, and often scripted. Rick is a very personable fellow and his tour reflected an excellent grasp of American history centered but not limited to Harpers Ferry. His knowledge of early American history up to and including the Civil War was excellent. I particularly liked the conversational, non-scripted format of his presentation and his willingness and ability to delve deeper into some topics. Overall, an excellent experience. If I get to visit Harpers Ferry in the future I will certainly consider engaging Mr. Garland again.

I took the Harpers Ferry ghost tour for $16.00. The female tour guide was not friendly or personable. She seemed knowledgeable, but wasn't good at telling ghost stories. She said she was a history teacher. Well, she talked like one too. I don't this tour was worth it.

I am very interested in history and have taken guided tours a number of times over the past 40 years or so. Rick is the best. He was our guide for a two hour tour of Harpers Ferry. Every minute was fascinating. He knows all there possibly is to know about the town, its history, and particularly its role in the Civil War. His perspective is different from the superficial explanations that one might get from a less knowledgeable person without the in-depth understanding of the politics and root causes that led to the war, and the critical role of Harpers Ferry in these events. Rick gets the highest rating possible, and I recommend his tour to everyone visiting Harpers Ferry, with any interest in its role in our history.
