Ghost Tours of Harpers Ferry

Harpers Ferry

Outstanding Tour and Mr. Rick is a great story teller

848720034

I am an avid ghost tour participant and this one is by far my favorite. I bought the book “A Ghostly Tour of Harpers Ferry by Shirley Dougherty” that was shown on the Harpers Ferry Ghost Tour Website. I read this before the tour, and it did not disappoint but when I attended the actual tour then all the stories proceeded to come to life right before your eyes. Harpers Ferry is a quaint town with a lot of history and intrigue.
Our guide was Mr. Rick owner and historian for Harpers Ferry and let me tell you it was AWESOME. We had a mixture of young adults, with some still being in high school, a family from London and everyone was fully engaged in learning about the civil war, John Brown’s raid and all the rich history contained in Harpers Ferry.
Mr. Rick is a great storyteller, full of extensive knowledge of the history of Harper’s Ferry, great singer and all the stories came to life with his retelling. Rick was very informative, and he kept the group interacting and engaged as he was telling the stories. He did a great job blending unexplained events with historical accounts. We were walking through town it was like we were transported back in time with the dress of Rick and how the stories were told. As we were standing/sitting at each place as the story was told you could feel the characters, see the characters, and totally feel the story come alive. It lasted almost 2 hours and it was not enough time for me, I wanted and needed more, but spooky enough that I was also glad to not be staying in town this night.

Make sure you arrive early take in the sights before the tour a lot of great places to visit and learn about the history of Harpers Ferry but wear comfortable shoes and sturdy shoes because you will be doing a lot of walking which makes it that much more fun. I recommend that you try to park at the Amtrack station because there is no real parking in Harpers Ferry. There is a shuttle bus to take you there but at night the bus does not run so you would be stuck.

We like ghost tours, not because we're big on the paranormal, but because they are something you can stretch your day with at night. Rick takes this tour and fills his audience with history of the town, mixing a little paranormal here and there. He even has some personal experiences to throw in. It's not that we don't believe in the ghosty stories, its just that we don't think one will every happen around us. Rick gives his audience their money's worth and people know it. On a Monday night there were 18 people waiting for the 8 o'clock tour.

Rick Garland, the history expert who leads the ghost tour at Harpers Ferry is both a fabulous storyteller and a master of audience engagement! Harpers Ferry is a great destination for multiple reasons, but the Ghost Tour was the absolute BEST!

Mr. Garland sets the mood as he strides onto the scene: tall and dressed in period fashion with a wide-brimmed hat, carrying a lantern, which he sets at his feet. He starts the tour by presenting interesting facts about ghosts and Kirlian photography. On the evening I joined the tour, there was a large group of five adults and six children. Mr. Garland engaged the kids and adults alike by asking us to fill in the blanks during parts of his story. For example, he mentioned that the water wasn't safe to drink, what did we think the townspeople drank? We all shouted out various beverages, and he reminded us that these settlers were Irish, so of course they drank whiskey!

As the tour went on, we found out more about the history of Harpers Ferry, and enjoyed laughing at our own guesses. Of course the tour is conducted in the evening, so hearing ghost stories by the light of Mr. Garland's lantern made us shiver a couple times. He also used his booming voice at key intervals to make us jump! I was impressed that he made it fun and entertaining for the kids, without it being too scary.

Well played, Mr. Garland! This tour is well worth the price. I'm suggesting it to all my friends. If you're planning a trip to Harpers Ferry, make sure to call the number on the poster in front of the church before 6 pm to ensure that Mr. Garland or his wife will appear at 7:45 to lead you on a two-hour mystical tour of the darkened town of Harpers Ferry. You won't regret it!

Attended the tour on Saturday 8/20. This was NOT a ghost tour but rather a history tour. 2 hours of walking to hear 3 not very interesting ghost stories just wasn't worth the time and money.
The guide was informative but the stories just wasn't there for me. When a narrator resorts to "sudden" screams to try and spook guest, your stories are NOT doing it.
When you loose 1/3 of the guest half way into the tour, clearly the stories just are not interesting.
You need better ghost materials and less history...it is after all a GHOST tour.

Wow! Sorry you didn't enjoy the tour, as most people overwhelmingly do, but honestly would be nice, as it is not just three stories. When in one of the most Historic Small Town in America, I would be doing everyone a dis-service if the tour did not have a Historical Background, though I do understand that it might not be everyone's cup of tea. On some, but not nearly all, very hot humid nights, people will cut out after the first hour, which is the length of many tours rather than the two hours of rated entertainment that I provide my many happy (see other reviews) customers of all ages.

Ghost tour was $18 per adult (their website states the new price), and was definitely worth it! It lasted about two hours, and starts from the St. Peter's church at 8pm. Make sure to check in and pay the fee before the tour starts. We went on 10/15/22, and there were probably close to 80 people there! (October is a very busy month for Harper's ferry) Rick and his wife split the group (but gave us a choice who to go with). We went with his wife, since her tour runs a little shorter. Over all the tour was great! It's a good mix of Harper's ferry history and ghost stories. We wanted to learn a little history along the way so this was perfect for us. However if you're expecting only ghosts ghouls and gore, this is not the tour for you.
Would recommend grab dinner in town before the tour and make an evening out of it!

The tour guide was clearly a skilled story teller who was passionate about the history of the area, no part of this tour felt phoned in or lazy. He had done his research on ghost phenomena and did a great job of weaving paranormal pseudoscience into the known history of harpers ferry.
The Hog Alley story was my favorite it left me with real chills and was extremely memorable and well delivered. being told the stories while being walked around the beautiful but haunting town of harpers ferry gives makes the stories feel incredibly immersive, as if you could feel them happening around you.
the guide was also very good at working the crowd, he kept everyone engaged in the stories and performance, so that it didn't feel like we were just being lectured, but rather we were having a conversation. it was incredibly fun, and even educational! i can't stress enough how obvious the level of experience and passion the guide had in and for living history and tours. he even managed to jump scare me twice! no easy task!
i highly recommend this tour of harpers ferry, it's not even strictly a ghost tour, you get a great tour of the town, a near complete history of harpers ferry, and the spooky ghost stories are a great bonus that ties the tour together.

We visited on our final night with a boy scout troop and families. I definitely recommend this for anybody as the stories are very very well told and interesting as they weave tightly along with the history of this town. The story teller does a great job to keep everyone involved, is impressively knowledgeable and even had the entire crowd singing along several times through the night!

Honestly I don't really know what kind of tour everyone else was on. Maybe it was a different tour guide? It was like the least spooky, least mysterious experience possible. The tour guide was basically screaming into her microphone (which was constantly crackling and itself turned up to 11), and she seemed exasperated the whole time. Although she was passionate and clearly knowledgeable about the history of the area, it felt like she was talking down to us like we were 3rd graders. She also only told like 3 ghost stories the whole time, and would randomly start talking about tv shows and movies (none of which I'd seen so it was a bit weird). There were also 35 people on the tour, so it just wasn't a very engaging experience.

On the upside, we did learn a lot about Harper's Ferry history (the non-ghostly stuff) and our guide was very good at explaining and providing context for historical stories. So I think it might be more accurate to describe this tour as a "nighttime historical tour" rather than a "ghost tour"... on a ghost tour I expect to be spooked, which I was not.

After a previous visit to Harper’s Ferry when we saw this tour advertised, my wife and I returned just for this Ghost Walk, which did not disappoint. As a historian, Rick (your tour guide) knows his facts and is an effective story-teller.

Although he spoke too quickly at times, he had our 20+ person tour group riveted to his every word as he walked us from place to place, oil lantern in hand, through this old, old town. His stories made history come alive, from the time Harper’s Ferry was founded shortly after the Revolutionary War, to the tumultuous Civil War period, to modern times.

Since the tour ends at 10 PM, if you’re from out of town like we were, recommend you spend the night in one of the town’s many historic B&Bs, none of which (fortunately) are featured on the Ghost Walk.

My husband and four of our grown sons attended the Ghost Tour last night with Rick. It was rainy and cool so Rick gave the tour in St. Peter’s church. I am sure he thought we were all historical dunces. My sons kept expecting the questions to be “trick” so were cautious about answering. He was a great host and very knowledgeable about the history of Harper’s Ferry; kept us laughing and occasionally jumping. Well worth the price. The only disappointment was not being able to walk the tour. It would have added to the ambiance. Thanks Rick, for a great evening. My husband and I hope to return for your historical tour when your health improves.
