We were looking to do a short tour of the sea caves with our 2 year old child and they did a great job of customizing the trip to our family. This was much better than some of the bigger tour boats out of Bayfield. We did a shorter trip to Sand Island compared to some of the other longer trips they do, and the experience was awesome. The boat was large enough to feel comfortable, but small enough to actually go inside the sea caves. From clear communication during the booking process through a great experience on the day of our cruise we could not recommend PMG charters enough!

What an awesome way to tour the Apostle Islands! Captain Pete was very friendly, informative, safety conscious, and a great pilot. He was amazing at maneuvering the boat in and out of the sea caves, nosing deep inside for an up-close view, something I thought could only be done with a kayak or canoe. Our 4-hour tour started from Little Sand Bay Campground, and took us to Raspberry Island to tour the lighthouse, around Bear Island, then Devils Island for a short hike to the lighthouse.
The highlight of the tour began upon departure from Devils Island, whereupon the sea cave maneuvers commenced. In and out, frontwards, backwards, forward, in reverse, close enough to touch the walls and the ceilings. The awesome force of water, carving intricate shapes, columns, shelves, into the rocky shoreline. Just fabulous!
I highly recommend PMG!

Perfect Day!! First Mate Ashley was great with communicating and setting up our tour. Very personable, professional, knowledgeable, and advised us about all the weather considerations that come into play with these excursions and are to be taken seriously. We were in contact the day before to confirm the best time to go out and all the details.
Captain Pete met us at the marina and we headed out in the boat. He shared a lot of history about the area and the islands, having grown up there and currently living in the area. We thoroughly enjoyed all the conversation and 1 thing we learned...The bears on the islands have been known to swim to other islands occasionally for mates and for food. Who knew?? And no, we didn't see any. Pete took us close to a few islands on our way to Devil's Island to show us Eagle's, rock formations, and share history. He took us all the way around Devil's island to show us the caves and then chose his special spot to tie off and get us in our kayaks. He was SUPER helpful getting our kayaks blown up, in the water, and us on them! He traveled close enough to us in the boat as we all adventured in and out of the caves. The caves were absolutely amazing!!!! The water, it is Lake Superior!! was freezing!!
Our tour lasted about 3-4 hours and was worth every penny! Our tour we felt was very personal and all 4 of us thoroughly enjoyed it all!!
Captain Pete and First Mate Ashley are top notch and we highly recommend them. They are a smaller Charter company but their attention to family and detail is perfect.

We scheduled the Mawikwe caves tour for 4, which included 2 adults, one teenager, and a 10 year old. We originally wanted to do the kayak tour so we could get closer to the caves (so we thought) but our youngest was too small so we did the boat tour with PMG. They were great about delaying due to weather so we could have better conditions for our tour. The web site and booking information had said we would leave from Cornucopia, but after going there we found out we would depart from Little Sand Bay Campground. It was an inconvenience but the trip made up for it. Pete was an amazing boat driver and went in many of the sea caves. We saw the kayakers going past them and except for one sea arch they went under I'm sure we were closer. Pete drove the boat into areas that we could not believe. We didn't have to paddle a long way to get there and saw much more in a shorter amount of time. All in all it was a great trip! Also, COVID related...Pete had a bottle of sanitizer on the boat and wore a mask for the trip which helped ease our concerns. We wore masks but they were not required.

We had a "Superior" experience with PMG Charters earlier this June! Awesome time on the lake, visiting several islands and lighthouses, and the amazing sea caves on Devils Island! Captain Pete was able to maneuver the small boat in and out of the caves for a fantastic experience! Great value for the trip that we received! This is a great way to experience the Apostle Islands. Captain Pete can also create customized experiences and appreciate that he has served on search and rescue operations as well. PMG Charters is a small family-owned and operated business. They went out of their way to make our excursion the best, taking into account safety and lake conditions, which he explained can be quite different out at the islands than it appears from the shore.

We had an absolutely fantastic time on our tour. First of all, Ashley was so kind and flexible in getting us a tour time that worked for our schedule. Second, Pete was not only phenomenal at maneuvering the boat around the caves to give us an awesome experience, but was so knowledgeable about the formation of the caves as well as the plant life. We will definitely make this a yearly event.

Ashley with PMG Charters was responsive, professional, and kind to work with. She went above and beyond to assist my husband and I when we were stuck on one of the islands due to poor weather. I would highly recommend PMG Charters!

We took a boat tour with PMG Charters and couldn't have been happier. We chose to tour the sea caves, which were awesome! Since the boat wasn't as big as the large tour boats, we were able to get into quite a few of the caves. Captain Pete was very personable, knowledgeable and went out of his way to make sure that we were satisfied with our trip. Booking the trip with his wife, Ashley, was also very easy, and she offered good advice on things to see before our boat trip.

We absolutely recommend booking a tour with PMG Charters! You will see the sea caves up close like you can’t imagine! We were so impressed with Captain Pete and the way he took us in the caves as if we were on kayaks! We got to go onto Rasberry and Devil’s Islands and tour the lighthouse grounds. He even took us by two eagles nests so we could snap pictures of them. He is incredibly knowledgeable and so very patient as I took so many pictures. It is a trip I will never forget!

An amazing afternoon exploring the Apostle Islands and sea caves with Captain Pete! We were “up close and personal” with the sea caves and it was so amazing. Captain Pete was a wealth of information and an expert navigating us around the islands. We saw 3 lighthouses and the sea caves on 4 islands. At one point he tied us off on a natural harbor and we were able to get out of the boat and walk around. Ashely was very helpful as we make our plans and even matched us up with another couple so that we could share the cost. All in all, one of the best tours we have taken on any of our many travels. Thanks for an amazing afternoon!

Looking to be in the area later this summer. I have 2 boys (13&11.. although 11yr old is size of 8 or 9). None of us are very experienced kayakers. Wondering about experience level and stamina for the sea caves tours.

Hello thank you for the interest. We can get you all into the caves by powerboat. Our boat is small enough to get very close and into a lot of caves.

Hi there! I'm a photographer from Oklahoma and I'd like to book a sunrise or sunset tour with you August 9-13th 2017 to photograph the Caves. This is the first time visiting and I don't want to chance my camera in a kayak. There may be 3-4 other people in the group. What is your price and I understand times are dependent upon the weather. Im trusting you to take us to the most beautiful & interesting places. And the reviews I've read, say you are the best. Happy to support your independent business!!

Hi Kathy Please excuse the late response. I just noticed your question. There are multiple sets of caves. The rate for the mainland caves is $60/person with a minimum of 3 people, to add Sand Island caves and lighthouse it is $100/ person with a minimum of 3. Devils Island Caves are $125 with a minimum of 4 people.

what type of weather would be expected for September 11th - 13th ? I know you cannot guarantee, but I didn't see any responses from people booking the tour in September. we would be a party of 6 or 7 adults and 2 children [ages 13]. thank you.

Hi Brenda,
Thank you for the interest and please excuse the late response. September can have the nicest days or it can be very windy. It is hard to predict but usually temperature wise it is quite pleasant. We are only allowed to take 6 people/ boat so we would need 2 boats for your group.

I and my granddaughter (age 10) will be in Bayfield 7/12 - 7/14. We would like a boat tour of the ice caves, etc. probably on Wed. the 13th. What do you have available and what is the cost?
How much for a family of 5 (age 19 and over)? Is this a private tour so to speak? Do we see all of the islands? What times can be reserved on a Thursday afternoon or Friday?
Peter G

Thank you for your interest! I have many options. This type of charter would most definitely be a private charter specifically designed for your family and their desires. Viewing all of the islands at least from a distance is more than likely. Please inquire with specific times and I will accommodate your needs and provide rates.
