Address
Neighborhood: Mission District
From burritos to bicyclists, the Mission is the foundation for all things hip in the city. Cultural attractions, an independent arts community, sumptuous street murals and a high density of bars and cafes make this neighborhood a magnet for young people. While terrific inexpensive food is abundant, its top-of-the-line restaurants now compete with the city’s best for fashionable diners. Indulge as the locals do by heading to Mission Dolores Park, buy some ice cream, and savor one of the most diverse neighborhoods in the country.
How to get there

Exorbitant pickup fee during Covid-19
Sep 2021
he food quality is good; the prices are quite high AND the charge if you do pickup at the door, instead of going in during the Delta variant, is exorbitant; for us it was 22% which is really exorbitant for pickup.

Rainbow has gone downhill
Jun 2020
Rainbow used to have a huge selection of interesting products in bulk bins and a large produce section. Unfortunately, they’ve decided to focus on profits by enlarging their quack remedies and homeopathy pills, crowding out healthy and unique products.

Awesome!
Dec 2019
I love Rainbow Grocery and I've been coming to this supermarket for a loooooong time!

Rainbow is huge, has amazing products, has a great bulk section, is a worker-owned coop, is all vegetarian and very vegan-friendly, is solar-powered, and is a progressive org. Sure, it's pricey, but if you can afford it, it's more than worth shopping at and supporting Rainbow Grocery.

Groceries and Variety Store
Aug 2019
I have been shopping with Rainbow for over 20 years. I always love browsing and filling bags in the bulk herbs and spices section. A customer can get lost in the diverse books, greeting cards, and gift section. The variety of healthy and local products is impressive. I love the newly remodeled configuration of the store. I like to come early and beat the crowds.

Good variety
Jun 2018 • Friends
We stopped in to get a variety of items while we visited the city. They offer premade meals and a lot of bulk products. Service was ok and prices reasonable.

Great vegan organic selection
May 2018 • Solo
Took a while to find this place, but was glad I did! Lots of interesting things, both foods and products. The selection of vegan foods was the best in the city. Better than whole foods!

Best market in the country
Apr 2018
I could have spend hours in here. Great prices on bulk items make this market incredible, affordable and environmentally conscious. They have great finds like Paleo granola and soup mixtures by bulk.

Great store, not so great employees
Jun 2017 • Solo
So this is my goto natural foods store when I'm in SF. The store itself is great, I come here mainly for bulk foods, personal care products, and some odds and ends. What I find consistently is that the employees are either, angst, in lala land, stuck up and the occasional down to earth nice person. Today as I'm bagging my groceries, the more I reached for stuff to put in my bag, the cashier puts the stuff further and further away from me. Hello...? Sometimes I think the workers in here are malnourished cause their it seems their brains aren't firing on all cylinders. Another time I was here, the cashier was having a conversation with a fellow employee in which see was expressing with a lot of anger about people that live in her complex that "stick to themselves and aren't friendly, they don't acknowledge others around them, etc". And I'm thinking, ok here's a paying customer and your forgetting where your at. Anyways, I come here to shop but always happy when leaving. Some nut jobs here.

Excellent health food store
Mar 2017 • Family
Huge health food store with really knowledgable staff, tons of bulk items and a large variety of products and choices. Staff seems to know a lot about the farmers, producers, nutrition, etc. Cheaper than Whole Foods and more variety and less plastic! than Trader Joes. Thanks for taking such good care of us!

The BEST Grocery for Vegans and Vegetarians
Feb 2017 • Couples
Sure, your local WholeFoods has a selection of vegan things and even if you're not near a WholeFoods you can probably find something to generally sustain you, but when you're at Rainbow Grocery, you can eat everything, explore new flavors and new brands and simply get lost in the joy of grocery shopping. Sounds hokey, but it's so true here! This is really a fun place to shop, whether you're buying your weekly fare or just popping in for some curiosities.

The best thing about this place is its sheer array of selection--you can pretty much find anything your tummy desires here (except meat). It's a huge store and they have some awesome features like bulk bins and an area where you can make your own nut butter of choice. How awesome is that?

What's more, this place goes local when possible--you'll find lots of brands that craft their foods right in the Bay Area, so you're supporting local businesses all the while noshing on the best quality of food.

Finally, this place is an institution! It's been around forever and you'll hear even non-vegetarians exclaim about how awesome it is and direct you to visit if you're in the area.

The only caveat about Rainbow is that it is very expensive, which makes sense--local foods and fare wages for employees make for a hike in prices. This may not be a place you frequent often, but it is so worth a visit! Grab some delicious hummus from the Hummus guys and a Semifreddy's baguette and enjoy a quick lunch on the go--you can also pick something up from their wide selection of prepared meals, from sandwiches to full-on feasts. Great place that will have a special place in your heart as soon as you step through the door.
