About
Regrettably, Basically Free Bike Rentals is temporarily closed. We recommend renting bikes from Sports Basement Presidio where you can rent a high-quality hybrid, electric, road, grave, mountain and/or kids bike at great prices. Additionally, Sports Basement Presidio offers ample parking and is the closest bike rental business to the Golden Gate Bridge! While at Sports Basement, shop our 80,000 square foot store for an awesome selection of product from The North Face, Ray-Ban, Patagonia, HOKA, New Balance and more! We have everything from drinks and snacks, to sporting goods, clothing and fun toys like kites, balls and frisbees.

It all sounded too good to be true but it is for real. The bicycle hire is the same price as the other rental shops in the area but whatever you spend on bicycle hire you get a credit note for that value which can be redeemed in Sports Basement close to the bridge.
The hybrid bikes we rented for 40$per day were excellent, well maintained and comfortable. The rental staff were very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. We cycled along the waterfront and over the bridge then on to Sausalito and beyond. On return we stopped at The Sports Basement (Decathlon equivalent) and chose 80$ worth of goodies. We then cycled to Lombard street and down the zig zag hill on the bikes which was great fun and a real experience.
We had an awesome day and cannot rate the bike rentals highly enough.
On the way out we stopped at The warming hut for a coffee - just by the bridge on the south side. On the way back we had a light lunch which was excellent and good value for money.
The weather was very kind to us too- What more could you ask.

I lived in SF for years and years and never biked the bridge. When visiting the bay area over the holidays we decided to take the plunge. We opted for Basically Free based on the good reviews and the concept of "Free" shopping in Sports Basement. Maybe we could score a half assed "gift" for some of our not so close relatives we might see at Xmas.

The staff was great, and at the risk of sounding awful, the "older guy" was super helpful in setting up our group with bikes and different ideas for routes if we wanted other options than the bridge. Now, personally I would HATE being referred to as the "Older lady" and it pains me to write that about our assistant during our experience, but for the life of us, we can't remember his name! Older, shaved head, and super funny and nice. Sorry, dude for having to refer to you that way :(

Oh, and we did manage to score some camping stuff for the meh relative and made it seem like we liked them year round rather than just once a year. :)

Rented a bike, got a voucher, rode to their store and used the voucher to get the goods. There were no strings attached. I rode across the GG bridge and over to the Marin Headlands then to Saulsalito and then back to their rental place. I had the bike about 6 hours. It was an electric bike and worked great. I would suggest the electric bike, when I'm riding past people pushing their bikes because they can't make it up the hill it feels real good. I had such a good time I rented the next day as well. When I came in the next morning they remembered me and said it was half off price every day after the first. I had no idea and they didn't have to tell me that. Anyway, I took the bike over the bridge again (after getting more gear at their store) and then back over to Lands End then to Golden Gate park. I had the bike another 6 hours. It was great. I would highly recommend this place as you basically get the bike use for free. I would also recommend biking the bridge early in the morning as there are far fewer people on it.

So I often live on Trip Advisor when I travel, frequently spending hours researching the best places to eat and things to do. Normally once my vacation is over and I’m back home, I try and “pay it forward” to the Yelp community by reviewing a handful of things we did. This is a first in that my experience with Basically Free Bike Rentals was so outstanding that I felt the need to write them a review while I’m still on vacation.

Allow me to start by asking a question. When you get something, would you rather pay for it or get it for free? If you’re like me and the 75 people I was in line behind when a donut shop recently gave out free donuts a few weeks ago, you like free stuff. If that’s the case, you’d have to be a crazy person to rent bikes in San Francisco from anywhere else.

Our experience with Basically Free Bike Rentals went as smoothly as their website and every other great review suggested it would. Before I arrived, I had made a reservation online (to save an additional 20% off) so once I got there, quickly filled out a waiver and they equipped myself, my wife and two kids with bikes and helmets. Every employee we interacted with was capable and pleasant, which based on our other interactions in San Francisco, they may have found the only employees in the city that can check both those boxes.

The bikes were all in good condition and in less than 5 minutes we were on the road. The 4 of us biked across the Golden Gate Bridge and into Sausalito where we took the Ferry back to San Francisco. Once we got backl to the city, we returned our bikes and got our receipt for $68.

In an expensive city, spending only $68 for 3+ hours of entertainment would be deserving of a positive Yelp review. But as a Infomercial pitchman would say “But wait, there’s more!!!!”

Where Basically Free Bike Rentals deserves to be enshrined in the Trip Advisor Hall of Fame is for the next 3 days you can take your receipt showing the full price of the Bike Rentals to a place in the Presidio called Sports Basement and apply THE ENTIRE AMOUNT you paid towards anything in the store.

Sports Basement looks like it was formerly a grocery store and takes up every square inch of it. It’s not as much of a Dicks Sporting Goods as it is an REI type place where you can buy jackets, shoes, workout clothes, etc. My wife had no problem finding a jacket she liked for a few dollars less than we had been charged for our bike rentals, so we checked out, showed our receipt and BOOM free jacket.

I don’t fully understand what type of business plan this is, I guess they’re hoping you’ll stop by to spend your $50 and end up buying more, so for that part, I apologize Basically Free Bikes/Sports Basement, because we just went in there, got our free $65 jacket and rolled out.

I genuinely cannot rate Basically Free Bikes any higher and will make sure they are my first recommendation to anyone I know planning to spend time in the Bay Area.

Got there, lots of decent bikes available. They also had tag alongs for my 6yo and decent bike seats for my 7 month old.
The rates were very competitive and that's before you factor in the voucher deal (cost of you rental = voucher to spend in their store).
YES,it really does work. You rock up to the huge Sports Basement sporting goods store in the Presidio (directly on the way to/back from Golden Gate Bridge) and can spend you voucher on anything (and there is a BIG selection).
So:
Good bikes
Good service
And going home with a "free" North Face windbreaker (and stuff for the kids)
Definitely 5*

There are many options to hire bikes and cycle Golden Gate Bridge. Our waitress at the Hilton Robyn, recommended these guys because you get a voucher to the value of your bike hire, to spend at a sports store conveniently located on the way to the bridge (or back). We hired electric bikes, four of us, they were new Scott brand, easy to use and super comfy. We were planning to ferry back but the helpful staff said it would be easier to ride back instead of a very long wait for the boat. We battled through the crowds on the way over to Sausalito, but parked up and had a fabulous lunch at Cibo - best Food and coffee in Sausalito and away from the crowds - and we timed our return well - just as the western side of bridge opened to cyclists (they’d been working on it). It was a super quick ride over, without any walkers, and we had so much fun. Stopped at the Sports basement and spent out $210 on shoes, clothes and foods... so our bikes were indeed Basically Free! One of the best days out in San Fran and a good team to deal with.

I cannot recommend this rental company highly enough. Just off Jones street, it is easy to find and only a few minutes from Fishermans Wharf. Staff are excellent and very efficient! We hired two adult and two kids bikes for 3 hrs for $67! They gave me a voucher for the same value to spend in the Sports Basement which we cycled past on our way to the Golden Gate Bridge! I used the voucher to buy the kids a pair of Adidas football boots and a pair of vans trainers - so the bikes were basically free! Staff were also very flexible about the 3 hrs!!! A wonderful bike rental - would absolutely recommend!

It has been 20 years since I was last on a bike, but we decided to hire for 3 hours. We reserved the bikes the evening before, so received 20% discount when we picked the bikes up. The staff were friendly, efficient and made sure the bike was the right size. Rental came with helmut and lock, and of course a credit note for the full value of our hire to spend in store. The cycle path along the sea front and through Crissy Field was beautiful and for the most part flat (hill at start and end meant we got off and pushed!) We cycled to the bridge and over, then returned with a stop off to spend our voucher at Sports Basement. A truly great morning of exercise and fun that cost basically nothing!

We passed the shop and went in to enquire. You hire a bike and you get the money back as a credit in the shop. If you book in advance on line you get 20%off. Don’t expect an email confirmation...I called the shop when I didn’t receive an e mail and was told that it would be in the system and that they would honour the 20% and they did! The bikes are very comfortable and easy to ride. The store is vast and easy to spend your credit (and more). The shop is a large warehouse on the way to the Golden Gate Bridge...you can’t miss it! Returning the bike was easy. Included is the lock and a hold-all on the handlebars. If you purchase a bottle of water...you get that on the credit too. Highly recommend.
