We did the Original San Francisco Tour with Britt. He was waiting for us at the Union Square meeting point. This is a walking tour and we spent about 3 hours walking around some of the more interesting neighborhoods of San Francisco. Britt was very knowledgeable and provided a lot of history to entertain and also inform us of the history of San Francisco and the various groups of people who make up the community. At Union Square, Britt gave us the history of Union Square and why it has that name. From there we wandered down Maiden Lane, which used to be the red light district and he described the efforts to "clean up" its image by changing the name. We then wandered into Chinatown and Britt gave us the quite interesting history of Chinatown from the Gold Rush days, the Great 1906 Earthquake and to the current day. Very interesting part of the tour. we also went to the top of a municipal parking structure where there was a terrific panoramic viewpoint where you can see a large vista from the Golden Gate to Alcatraz to the Bay Bridge and Downtown San Francisco. We then went on to North Beach, where the Italian community was based and saw some important monuments and interesting eating establishments. We stopped at a bakery for some delicious tiramisu. From there we went to the Financial District and learned about how business established itself in the landfill areas of the San Francisco Bay. The tour ended fittingly at the Transamerica Pyramid, once the tallest building in San Francisco. Free Tours by Foot has many tours we will be looking forward to take in the future when we return to San Francisco. You pay what you think the tour is worth at the end of the tour. These tours are certainly worth it and you will learn more than on any of the usual paid tours of San Francisco.

If you want to be shown Alcatraz or the Bridges with a busload of other tourists, don't bother with these tours. If, on the other hand you want to see the non-tourist areas/historical sights with possibly 8/10 like minded travellers- including a 2nd floor Banksy - you will enjoy these tours. If you don't like it, you don't pay.

Thank you so much for your kind review! We do try to show people things they wouldn't be able to see from a car (or a bus) and to be a good source of information for everybody. We're thrilled to have you on the tour, and you're welcome back anytime!

We went on the Original San Francisco Tour with tour guide Vicky Dangerfield.

Not only was she very knowledgeable and captivating while narrating the interesting history of San Francisco, but she was also very entertaining and fun, keeping us all interested throughout the entire tour.

Her extremely warm and caring personality made you feel comfortable with her and the rest of the group.

It was a very easy and unique way to learn about the city while slowly walking through its vibrant neighborhoods.

A great way to discover new and interesting anecdotes with a very approachable and friendly guide. Highly recommend!

I'd previously taken a few Free Tours by Foot in Washington, DC, which were fantastic. I was happy to take three San Francisco tours in December 2019. I went on The Original San Francisco Tour with Britt and The Castro Tour, also with Britt, as well as the Billionaire's Square Tour with Vicky. My favorite was the Billionaire's Square Tour, chiefly because the tour stops are all within a couple blocks of each other, and you consistently see memorable sites and learn interesting info within a short time and compact setting. I've been to San Francisco in the past, so The Original San Francisco Tour was a bit too generic for me, but I still enjoyed it, and I'd still recommend it. I learned more over the first hour than the second two hours. The Castro was a new area for me, and it was touching to learn more about the neighborhood's devotion to Harvey Milk. I hope to take more of their tours the next time I'm visiting San Francisco. In fact, I'd do the Billionaire's Square Tour again myself. Highly recommended. Go!!

Great walking tour of the city by Britt. His ability to narrate the history of San Francisco in a relevant and captivating way is unmatched. Great for anyone wanting to learn more about the city's history and to see the true neighborhoods of San Francisco vs. just the tourist attractions.

Really good informative tour hosted by Britt. His enthusiasm for his city was very evident and this showed us many aspects that we wouldn’t otherwise have seen. Probably one of the best walking tours I have ever been on and I highly recommend this.

I’ve done many walking tours before and this one is perhaps the best of them all. A great way to get to know the city and get some tips on where to visit, it took about 2.5 hours and was packed full of interesting facts and details that I would never have known without it. Vicky was the perfect guide. If there is one thing you absolutely must do when you come to San Francisco, it’s this tour.

We went on two tours while in San Francisco. The Original San Francisco tour (with Britt) and the Little Italy/Lombard Street/Fisherman's Wharf tour (with Vickie). Both were excellent, well-informed guides with interesting stories that combined history and current culture which brought the city alive. There was some overlap with the info in the two tours, but the guides each had their own style which still made them engaging.

I went on a tour of San Francisco, and it was a walk through the evolution of the city from its inception to the modern days. The guide was warm and knowledgeable and took us through back corners as well as the main attractions, which added to the experience. It was a manageable walk for me since I’m not in very good shape, and a great way to see many spots of the city at once. I already recommended it to some friends.

Great tour. We learned a lot of San Francisco including some background information, information of current developments in the city and of coures we heard some urban legends. Plus Vicky showed us some hidden gems in San Fransico. This all makes the tour perfect and we were more than happy to attend.
